So has Draugnar finally matured and can I take him off my mute list?
Draug need not answer. I won't see it. But does anyone else what to chime in with their opinion so I can decide if it is safe to take him off? I kind of miss his ferociously bombastic posts, but he got so over the top in his youthful desire to act tough I had to mute him or kill him before his (mental) 21st birthday, and the former was the better option
I won't give away her screen name and you won't find her in any of my games, but she's in a couple of games right now and having a blast! How cool is that?
"Now Where Have I Heard That Before..." (A Game Played Entirely On Quotes?)
Every message you send has to be a quote from a movie, TV show, book, song, etc., with the exception of locations (as finding a quote for moving to the Ruhr is a bit too difficult, I think)...an example, say, Italy asking Russia for help could be: "With our combined strength (@Budalest) we can END this destructive conflict, and bring order to the galaxy, er, Europe!" :p
After a year away, I've decided to come back to webdip for the duration of my summer holiday (as opposed to just making the occasional post on the forums every 3 months). Not playing any games until I've got past my week away that starts in a fortnight. How's webdip getting on?
So, today Scottish Football League clubs have voted that the "new" Rangers FC, arising out of the old, bankrupt and liquidated, Rangers, will enter the league structure in Division 3 (the fourth tier of league football in Scotland).
I challenge you to a WTA full press game. Only players who have donated and hence have a Shiny Medal can join. Please post your preferred bet size and phase length, though please nothing much more than 100 .
When is it acceptable to throw a WTA game( or any game for that matter, but WTA has the stiffest "penalty") knowing that you could force a draw? Are there ever grounds to believe that this is ever acceptable? I don't believe so, but looking to be proven wrong. I am of the school that would say Win; failing that, draw. Period. Curious to know what others think.
Once a week, I'm gonna complain about stuff here. You can either agree with me or yell at me for being stupid, but don't try and piss me off, 'cause I just ain't been in the mood lately.
Wilt certainly did, 2WL, and one could argue Olajuwan or Duncan did to some extent too; but I think Jordan did too, albeit more subtly. For example, because everybody wanted to be like Mike, he ushered in an era of terrific athleticism as the focus of the game.
Interestingly, Wilt changed the game in a sense because people had to adapt to beat Wilt. One could argue that Jordan _directly_ affected the game somewhat less because there was no way to adapt to beat him.
I'd take that one step further and argue George Mikan revolutionized the game more than either Wilt or Jordan, since neither of them necessitated a rules change to level the playing field.
There's a huge difference between being the most influential and being the greatest, being the best. Plato is the most influential Western philosopher but who will today say he is the greatest?
I think that's a bit of a sliding scale in one's definition of "great," ulytau. (Certainly there are still people who call Plato the greatest, by the way). In any case, that's much more likely to happen much, much later on. The fact that the Beatles are still directly influencing people 40 years out says a great deal about their quality.
One could also argue that Bob Dylan was an even bigger influence on modern music than the Beatles, since he was the first to turn them on to marijuana :)
Which ones do you think suck ghug? I'm not actually trashing the Beatles, they are just not favorites of mine at all. To me they are vanilla.
The list you see there is actually pulled off my facebook lmao. It's about 2-3 years out of date, and I acknowledge some are better than others. But I enjoy all their stuff.
How do you measure "being in some way influenced by The Beatles"? Of course everyone heard their songs because you just can't avoid it, but that's not an important influence, every musician also heard about the Nazis and had to cope with it - that doesn't mean it's reflected in their work. Am I influenced by Leo Fender because I play on Stratocaster? That's just a holistic bullshit model of a world where everything is interconnected and interdependant to a point where you can't discern which parts are actually important and which are marginal.
So let's say that "being in some way influenced by The Beatles" means a conscious influence on the artist? Or perhaps just a direct impact on the music, its sound, structure... In that case, this influence is slowly but constantly vanishing. You don't see big names covering Beatles songs as much nowadays (Dylan has an upper hand here I would say). How many 30-somethings would say about The Beatles the same Lennon said about Elvis: "Nothing really affected me until I heard Elvis. If there hadn't been Elvis, there would not have been The Beatles"? How many random reviews state the band sounds like The Beatles? Which elements of music from artists like Sunn O))), Salif Keita or Frankmusik could you atribute to Beatles? Especially since they were predominantly men of synthesis, blending music forms of yesterday and perfecting them not outright inventing them like Schaeffer and Henry did with the electronic music.
Their influence is actually predominantly indirect. People like semck or Atom are in vast minority in their respective age bracket; while most of the rest (including me) would not dispute The Beatles as the most influential band (not least because they know they are expected to reply to such question with The Beatles), only a handful would cite them as their favorite band (which is a huge part of what one considers the greatest band).
I'm still laughing about how preposterous it is that in a thread that discusses the Beatles merits as the greatest bank ever (quite likely) someone even had the idea, even with irony (though it didn't seem like it) to start talking about Linkin Park as if they were even in the same musical galaxy of talent as the Beatles... Rich.
"*Not someone who has done in-depth musical studies and continually participates in musical activities"
Wow, elitist. Lol. I do, but thanks for not asking.
Anyway to be clear all I was expressing was that I don't particularly love listening to Beatles music, not that the Beatles weren't important or novel or skilled. There were most of these, though they do get blown a bit out of proportion at times.
Because, KA, you false-ass bulshit phony "Christian"....there is **nothing"" Christian about deciding to bitch about things on a weekly basis. whatever happend to the Bible saying to be joyful in ALL things, huh? Fucking phony ass bitch.
@2ndWhiteLine... As much as I enjoy such undeniably magnificent classics as "Crawling" and "Bleed It Out," I feel compelled to submit for your consideration the indescribable beauty which is the album "Indestructible" by Disturbed. Specifically there's that one song where the guy laughs all evil-like in the beginning and oh boy that sure sounds neat eh fellas?
