The dictator strike again
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/voter-suppression-scandal-will-be-a-test-of-harpers-leadership/article2350684/

First vetoing bills using unelected senators, now cheating in the election to get a majarity. Is Harper a dictator or elected official?

So what happened - why did I bother to join this game only to see it end in a 7-way draw before the autumn 1902 moves? I'm sure there's a good answer....

Time-wasters who team up with their mates.......
and enter anonymous games and team up against everyone else and usually but not always win. Then they spend all their time making sure they get 17 SCs each before drawing. Then flushed with their 'success' they start doing it in further matches. I just want to play a game with genuine competition where people win on merit and not because they teamed up with their schoolmates. How can this be stopped or how can I prevent getting stuck in games with these imbeciles?

this is what i think of people frowning upon me
i don't care.

what happens if you're playing a non-live game and the tides have turned, and it's clear your alliance will lose, and none of the opposition will defect? for live games, i usually play them through because it doesn't take too long to end them, but who wants to spend weeks playing a game that you will eventually lose?

Somaliland
Does anyone else ever get frustrated at the lack of international recognition of Somaliland? I find myself coming back to this subject over and over, trying to find any good reason to not recognize a democratic state in Africa with a history of free and fair elections, non-violent transitions of power, and relatively stable economic growth.

DATC and the known errors on this site
I took a look at the DATC tests here (http://webdiplomacy.net/datc.php) and noticed that 6.H (Retreating), 6.I (Building) and 6.J (Civil Disorder and Disbands) were all missing. Two of the most prominent errors on this site fall in this area (ending games before retreats and incorrect civil disorder disbands).

Failed move?!
Basicly the situation was that while playing as turkey in the late 1901 I moved my army from Bul to Gre and another one from Con to Bul via land, supported by a fleet in the black sea, but somehow the move failed and the army order is referred as hold in the orders log. My other army emptied Bul and noone else attacked there so why did the move fail? Any ideas?

Points Lost in Cheating Matches
Do the moderators reimburse points to players retrospectively when they find they were victims of cheating in previous matches?
Also on a general point why do so many people try and cheat, what is the point?

website does not always display all games / how do you resign a game?
The website does not always display all 4 of my games at the top. Therefore, I got into a game on the late end of the turn and got attacked because I couldn't negotiate from the beginning, and it is ruined once again. This would not have happened if I could have resigned the first 2 games. They continue to display at the top of the screen even though I want to quit. How do you resign / surrender?
Overall, I have had a much worse experience with this website than I expected.

Do I always have to play every country I draw to the best of my ability ?
Yes, of course. I've played countries I dislike and I try my best
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
25 Feb 12 UTC

Say there is a particular country I dislike playing
Austria as it happens to be at present
( I am on a losing streak and have got Austria 3 or 4 times in my last 8 games
which is way above the probability, I joined a game called Don't get Austria to get
away from it and yes I got Austria )

Am I compelled by any rule to play Austria to the best of my mediocre abilities ?

I have just drawn Austria yet again, so I have publicly warned the other players
in the games global messaging that I will not be playing with serious effort, and have
sent private messages to two of the three countries most affected, to give them a
"good heads up"
I will stick in movement orders for spring 01, but after that I will either go CD
or play in a stupid way so that Austria gets wiped out asap.
Am I allowed to do this ?
If I choose to throw away the points and go backwards in the rankings as a
consequence am I violating any of the rules ?

Yes, you are allowed to do that. That is poor gamesmanship though, and will be frowned upon.

don't be a fucking baby. nut up and learn to play austria.

well you are a King of Diplomacy so you have to be noble & pure,
but what rule ( or rules ) applies here ?
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
25 Feb 12 UTC
I agree with Gobbledydook. If I were in the game with you, I'd be pretty ticked.

Also, Austria is one of my favorites to play. Just go hedgehog in spring 1901 if you don't trust your diplomatic skills to secure one of your borders. Keep talking to everyone. Don't give up. If you don't pay as much attention to that game as others, fine, but don't CD just because you don't want to play Austria.

That's not cheating, it's just called "being a jerk."

Also, I'm not positive, but if you CD, you may not get credit for playing Austria in the random country assigner, making you more likely to draw Austria again.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)
25 Feb 12 UTC

I understand the "ettiquette issue", but that is not the question I am asking
Do you have any social skills? Yes, there is no official Diplomacy "rule" saying you can't CD. But everyone here is going to think it's pretty pathetic that you won't even try just because you draw Austria. Some people play Austria very well. Don't you think you have the capacity to learn?

"Also, I'm not positive, but if you CD, you may not get credit for playing Austria in the random country assigner, making you more likely to draw Austria again. "

If it doesn't work that way, it definitely should.

A game is a game is a game. You are allowed to do pretty muh whatever you want in a game. Some may view it as poor sportsmanship, some may blacklist you forever, but some may view it as a unique opportunity to react to unexpected circumstances which is a critical skill and thus you'd be blessing them with a rare gift, it's all in the eyes of the beholder. You yourself may start out with that sort of attitude only to stumble across unexpected secrets that forever unlock the mystery of playing Austria through the end of time. You may not. One thing that is very clear is that you are not allowed to talk about current games on the forum, so do keep that in mind as well.

Good luck figuring out what to do.

This is why capital MM is such a menace in full press games. His wording is structured in such a way that compels you to read the way you are inclined to read.
I wish I had that gift.
So, little mm, man up. Learn to play Austria.
And stop talking about on going games in the forum.
Octavious (2701 D)

I don't think anyone can stop you doing this, but it may have been better to keep this quiet and be thought of as merely incompetent than to announce it and be thought of as an arse as well.

@MjtMitch - You aren't breakign nay rule by not playig to the best of your ability. And the point of the game is to have fun. So anything you do short of CDing or outright breaking a rule, is fair game. Not to say it will make you any friends, but you won;t have broken any rules.

That said, use it as a learnign opportunity and try different opening and different strategies to see what works for you. If you lose, so what. You'll have try something new and gained some very valuable insights. And who knows, you might pull a rabbit out of the hat and win or be part of a draw.

thanks for the contributons, I have always had a go with Austria,
rather than just be CD from the start, not that i had any success,
but my last effort ( hand the country over to Italy,
by giving him advice as to how to get my sc's & help was no solution )
And I will observe the rule about not discussing any current game in the forum.

as a hypothetical, i figured if i was going to play to get wiped out I should at least
let the other players know my game plan to be polite.

I have similarly played Italy without much enthusiasm in the past and would
not exclude the possibility that I might do so again.

I am over getting upset if other players go CD, even if it is often "unfair" to one or two
players and gives one or two others an "unfair" advantage.
I figure it's a feature of modern webdiplomacy, random CD's, and as it introduces
more anarchy, it provides more opportunities.
play enough games and the "unfairness" evens out.
I had some experiences where all but one player
( invariably the one who got a huge advantage from the CD's )
would vote to draw or cancel, but one holdout would keep the game going,
so I concluded that I just had to learn to play under those circumstances.

And the "learning" point is taken on board,
and I found with Russia that by playing silly games actually taught me some things.
I was a firm 3 south 1 north opener with Russia
had a horror run , kept getting Russia or Italy so I did some daffy things,
tried a 2 north, 1 up the centre and only the fleet south & Turkey went CD from the start
so I got away with it

I personally think that being able to do well as Italy and Austria in full press is a sign of a quality Diplomacy player. If you're unenthusiastic about either, I'd consider perhaps trying some more creative openings with both. I'm particularly fond of the Bohemian Crusher (http://www.diplom.org/Zine/F2008M/Hunt/crusher.htm) as Italy, helps to spice up my moves beyond the ordinary limitations of Italian openings.
Well I now know what you mean. I guess I'll just leave.
