A disconcerting development
In my country, the life expectancy for men has risen by about five months, of women by a little over two years.

The Absolute Truth
No, this is not a discussion on absolutes. It is an experiment. I wnt to play a diplomacy game in which all players must tell the truth, and nothing but the truth, to their fellow diplomats. I think it could make for a very interesting game. Lies by omission would be acceptable, and trying to mislead someone without lying is certainly encouraged. Would anyone else be interested in such a game?

The Democratic-controlled Senate has not produced a budget in more than 930 days.
This makes is hard for Obama to run with any credibility at all against a "do nothing Congress" when his own party hasn't done even its most basic job in the Senate for over two years.

OK, I'll Give Mr. Gingrich Credit Where Credit Is Due...
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/newt-gingrich-prepared-heat-immigration-043951171.html
I DO think that's one of the more reasonable positions taken on immigration, especially by a GOP Candidate...never been a fan of Newt's, but he's at least now said one thing I genuinely agree with in these debates...that's one more than the rest of the GOP field...your take?

WorldDip map
Hello all

Haven't played here before. Was wondering if there was a different style map for the world game. Finding it difficult to read country/province names in the darker spaces and can't read in the dark blue FA spaces at all.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

How do you find a bloody password?
As I understand it password protected games are typically posted in the forum. You see the game and then go look in the forum for the post with the password but without a search function how do you find it?

Question for Tettleton's Chew
Seeing as you continuously start threads about how the left is continuously wrong and flawed forever, explain the following question to me. Why did this financial meltdown the world is currently experiencing come under a right wing president of the United States. The housing markets were obliterated, the debt of the United States and Europe went through the roof, and the stock markets still have not recovered all their gains.

Cancelled games
I wish you could find out who has NMR'd, and subsequently leaves in Anonymous games.

I've just wasted over an hour playing a game that we had to cancel.

Why didn't you draw?
gman314 (100 D)
22 Nov 11 UTC
When someone CDs, it's best to draw so that everyone else gets points and so that they have a resign stuck on their records forever.
damian (675 D)

I always insist on a cancel. I'm sick of fake draws on my record.

That's just me though.

I'm not a fan of boosting my record, but I do like putting a CDer on a lot of blacklists by giving them a resign.

I'm with Strategos. You missed a turn, tough shit, you deserve the CD.
damian (675 D)
22 Nov 11 UTC
Eh. I don't have much to contribute to this discussion. However I'd rather keep the rating systems more legitimate. Then worry about punishing some garbage player.

I see the records of good players as being worth more then that of the garbage ones.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
I believe GR doesn't take into account games finished before end of '02? so your record isn't really helped.
gman314 (100 D)
22 Nov 11 UTC
Yeah, it only works after autumn 1903, but you still get one or two points out of it and the CDer still gets a resign.
Dosg (404 D)
22 Nov 11 UTC
I prefer to cancel as well, but it would be nice if in an anonymous game if someone CDs, then they get revealed when they have 'left' the game. I'd just like to know who it is that's wasting our time.
I know if you join annonymous games that will always be a risk but it would be a 'nice to have'.
Anyway...
Also, it would be good if you still get the resign even if you also get defeated. There are so many players with 80% resign rate that are masked by a 60% defeat rate.
By that, resign takes priority over defeat on the player record, rather than the other way around.
spyman (424 D(G))
22 Nov 11 UTC
Nah... After an hour of play you should draw. So nobody won, but some definitely lost. It might have been a crap game, but not every game can be Kasparov versus Karpov. Those quitters made their choice. Besides cancels just reward quitting games when the going gets tough.
Dosg (404 D)
22 Nov 11 UTC
I think I'm leaning towards that stand now Spyman. I was pretty narked yesterday.

As an aside, at what point in a game (what year?) do people generally not offer the draw after someone goes into CD. When is it fair game to carry on and take advantage of the situation and when is it expected (and considered appropriate to draw/cancel)?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
I think it depends on the level of players surrounding. A CD in the first 2 years is call for a draw by the better players, I believe. Most lower echelon games will just play through it. The best way to force the draw is to just create a draw alliance. The holdout will come around if he sees its him against the world.
Yonni (136 D(S))

I think a lot of this debate could be solved by two measures.

-Cancelled games still appear in your history but are not recorded on your record (so you can see who it was who CDed)
-CDs in cancelled games still count as resigns

If that was the case, the number of false draws would be radically reduced.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 11 UTC
I think they'd be virtually eliminated. The only reason for the false draw is to punish the CDer. Also, if a CD in a cancel were to *not* get back the points, that would additional reduce thre false draws. As it stands, a cancel returns the CDers points.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 11 UTC
@Dosg - When it is approrpriate would depend on the size of the Cd nation. A little 1 SC nation that is quitting cause he is a sore loser can be ignored and played on even in year 3 (it happens) but a strong 2nd that goes CD should see the game cancelled if it would alter the outcome in most situtations. I mean, if the player CDing gives someone else the win because it was a critical spot or size, it's good form to accept the draw. But if they would have likely gotten the win anyhow, then not necessarily. It's a tough judgement call to make.
