Utopia
Thomas Moore's book (which I am about to start reading) represents what is in his view, a Utopian society. Given this book was written almost 500 years ago, there is no doubt that Moore's ideas are outdated and maybe in some case perceived as unethical in our society.

Sp, my question for all would be, say you were the author of Utopia, what would be the setting of your book?

How to make and keep alliances
I am wondering what people feel are the best ways to make and keep alliances. Seeing as they are almost necessary to win, i want to know some experienced players' advice and tips on them.

Iceland...
Iceland is not in its proper position on the WebDiplomacy map (meaning that it is not that close to England in actuality), so why would it even be included on the map if it serves no other purpose. WHY IS IT THERE?

Annoying Player Help
A friend of mine playing web diplomacy told me he had a player called King Atom in his game, but feels the player is very annoying and wants help dealing with the problem. Is there any way to kick a player out of a game or block them from joining a public game for future reference.

Games paused?
I may have missed the thread on this, but is there any way for a mod to now unpause the games that have been put on pause since the glitch has happened at least 24 hours ago? In world games where there are a fair few who have already CDed, it would be great to get moving!

A lot of people who are asshats online use the excuse that IRL they are real good people. Why is this considered a valid excuse? Is it because of the perceived anonymity of the web, like road rage? If you wouldn't call someone a faggot IRL, why would you do it here?

Sins of a Solar Empire
This could be the best RTS I've ever played. It's like a wonderful mix of Ascendancy, EVE, Homeworld, and Supreme Commander. Still need to play some more to see if it's my number one, but it looks promising. Anyone else play this?

Supreme Commander? I haven't played it.

I am very picky when it comes to games, it takes a lot to get me interested in a game. Supreme Commander (like most games) never made the cut, (neither did half the games I mentioned above, I was just thinking of examples of 4X RTS games)

Well, as an RTS enthusiast, I highly recommend SupCom. It's a remake of Total Annihilation, if you're familiar with that game.

I am not. RTS is meh. I prefer turn based (sorta).

My fav game right now is Vicky 2. Not sure what to called the many paradox interactive games.

Eh, I have Sins (none of the expansions) and although I love the concept of the game and have been trying to get into it more lately, I just can't. I find the AI (even on hard difficulty) easy to beat, not to mention boring, and I don't like sitting down for that long for a multiplayer game. Maybe I'll try multiplayer sometime. I love RTS games, and as far as they go I think Company of Heroes is the undisputed king of the genre. Fast paced, very tactical action. None of that boring resource gathering nonsense. I grew up on Age of Empires, so I do love traditional RTS games, but once I tried CoH, I was hooked.

I have only played with both expansions, and I find that on the harder difficulties the AI is (almost competent) its better then most AIs in most games, thats for sure.

@Fasces: Are Paradox Interactive games any good? I've been considering EU3, but it looks kinda tedious.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
12 Sep 11 UTC
I love them. Victoria 2, Hearts of Iron 3 and Hearts of Iron 2 are my 3 fav games.

If you are considering getting EUIII, wait until EUIV (called Magnu Mundi but is based in the same time period and has the usual PI style game) comes in which is being released in early 2012. I have played EUIII, and quite honestly it was my least fav of the PI games... (that I have played, which aren't that many)

Sins is really good, but I've only got the vanilla game. My main problem with it is that the AI is more concerned with saving its fleet, not planets making it difficult to get large battles.
I'm playing EU3 right now and I think its great, though I'm getting my ass repeatedly handed to me. Its a learning experience haha. I haven't tried any other Paradox games though
Fasces349 (0 DX)
12 Sep 11 UTC
really? I find that its to easy to conquer the world.

However I have never played on anything other then normal so it might be the difficulty level.

EUIII was fun, but I liked Civilization 4, Victoria 2, Hearts of Iron 2 and 3 better.

Stardock games started to get too simple once I delved into Paradox Interactive ones. GalCiv2 was the last Stardock game I really got into.

And don't listen to Fasces, Magna Mundi is not going to be EUIV, anyone interested in the game knows that. It uses the same engine and has mostly the same time period but the developers are different as well as design philosophy. If you enjoy vanilla EUIII, you might not like Magna Mundi since conquering the whole world as Ryukyu is not possible. Conquering the whole world as any country is not possilble.

i had a lot of fun with hearts of Iron 2, haven't played the 3 D game yet.

Victoria 2 looks nice...

Civ games are fun when you get 4/5 mates to play a big multiplayer game, but it's pretty hard to get that many people in on room at one time... if only we had a game where we had 24 hour turns... oh wait...
@ Fasces - I may just suck, but I don't see how you can conquer the world. I started as an easy nation - Portugal - and built a huge colonial empire that included most of West Africa, Indian Ocean islands, Brazil and a large portion of the Caribbean. I had an inflation problem (topped at 39%) but there were just so many problems. Great Britain dragged me into too many wars, and even though I didn't fight in them, I still had to accept the call to arms before I made white peace. It got to the point where I just said no (or else took a 5 stability hit!), lost them as an ally, and Castille declared war a year later with a boatload of allies. Navarra chose Castille over me, Algiers and Sicily and Milan (my allies) were easily overwhelmed, and Castille sunk most of my 60 ship fleet and just rampaged everywhere.

That said, I find it very hard to take over the world.
I mean, I didn't think 2 tech levels would mean that much (due to inflation I was falling behind). Not too much difference between 19 and 21, is there?

You have to use gamey tactics and gameplay loopholes to conquer the world in EUIII but once you learn those, it really is quite easy to conquer the world. Since it seems you like to play fair and maybe roleplay a little bit, you didn't reach a point where gaming meets powergaming. If you enjoy the game the way you play now, do not even ask about the possible exploits, it would ruin your fun.
I mean, I know that investing all in one tech area at a time makes it go faster than if you spread it out, but that's about it haha. I roleplay a bit by country (not by ruler, as I've seen in some AAR's) and follow the missions that they give me. I don't really enjoy the powergaming aspect though. I mean, if you got big enough that you aren't hurt by badboy wars, then its really no fun, I would think.

Guessing game
So I got home from one social event, few beers were unlucky enough to meet my stomach and so on. Then I got hungry and fried me 7 late-night eggs. The problem was I forgot I wasn't supposed to feed the whole family as usually but only myself, yet I used the same amount of oil and butter. The eggs literally swam in grease. Of course I ate them, I'm a pig/scrooge, but what will my intestines say? To find out whether there is any consensus on this complicated subject, I propose a guessing game.

How common is soloing without backstabbing?
I've been in the endgame a few times with a strong position, but I hate the idea of turning on someone I've been working with since turn 1. It just... it's a terrible bad vibe, y'know? You have a good time playing together for a couple hours, coordinating, etc, I don't want to stab after that.

Other players might make poor tactical moves or fight at bad times, but how common is solo-winning based on that? Are people who try to not stab their allies consigned to lots of draws?
