Utopia
Thomas Moore's book (which I am about to start reading) represents what is in his view, a Utopian society. Given this book was written almost 500 years ago, there is no doubt that Moore's ideas are outdated and maybe in some case perceived as unethical in our society.

Sp, my question for all would be, say you were the author of Utopia, what would be the setting of your book?

How to make and keep alliances
I am wondering what people feel are the best ways to make and keep alliances. Seeing as they are almost necessary to win, i want to know some experienced players' advice and tips on them.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

Anyone can comment however.
I promise money.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
13 Sep 11 UTC
i suppose that would work, but wouldnt that be metagaming if you used real money
But seriously, what I find helpful is to give your prospective ally:

(1) a clear objective to the alliance;
(2) a clear reason/set of reasons why this objective is in the prospective ally's best interest;
(3) a clear method for achieving this objective; and
(4) a clear reason/set of reasons why this course of action is better than the alternatives.

You have to couple it with a few other traits:

*Talk to everybody from the start of the game, and even if you're not directly able to coordinate with them, check up on them once a year minimum. Try to talk about future plans if not immediate ones; after all, talking to them about your future plans means they're involved in them, and that bodes well for you. Just be careful about the specifics, lest they get leaked to any undesirables.
*Be courteous throughout; respond to rudeness with playful sarcastic banter, and try to convey a likable personality as you talk to everyone.
*Don't let your emotions get too involved; too much happiness is likely to piss somebody off given the zero-sum nature of the game, too much negativity is going to ruin your game.

And perhaps the most useful thing of all: be sure your ally is always busier than you are on the field. If you're establishing strong rapport with everyone on the board and sticking to a manageable front, you should be able to find someone willing to check your neighbor's growth for you, and you're also less likely to find someone checking your own.
Hahaha. I was (almost) kidding about the money. I did promise money in a face-to-face game once. That sucker never got a cent outta me, though!

Also try and be open and sharing with information. If you're too guarded people will get suspicious. Note however I didn't say the information had to be true...
I can't believe I forgot that. +1 Mafialligator. Misinformation and propaganda are wonderful tools if you are careful in your wording. They can seriously backfire if done wrong, so be sure you've thought through what you're going to say, but it's unbelievable how easy it is to have the entire board believing an outright lie and steering their foreign policies to your benefit as a result.

i remember i was in a chess tournament and i saw a player on the board next to me bribe the other player to loose. the guy took the money and had mate within five moods. you should have seen the expression on the loosers face. priceless. and since bribary is cheating he couldnt ask for money back.
LOL. That's great. I never understood how bribery in things like this was seriously supposed to work. Whoever puts up something of value first (losing or money) gets screwed.

i know.its usually better just to win it with skill if you can. i won 300 dollars in a chess tournament once, for tenth place

i got money without being bribed or giving bribes
Good stuff. I don't think I've ever played chess competitively. I hear it helps your tactical skill in this game, but I guess I'm doing okay without it. *shrug*
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))

well in chess it is just you versus another player, where here it takes alliances and the whims of others (not being stabbed), as well as pleasing others to help you win so purely tactical play wont cut it, while it is helpful and chess can help
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
13 Sep 11 UTC
also, if you are playing in a game with people who know you, a good reputation would help, for some of the less popular players (as in ones who often annoy others, no names but you know who i am talking about) may find it harder to make alliances
Well, right. Pure chess won't translate to Diplomacy (much as pure Diplomacy won't translate to chess). It's just helpful as a tactical supplement, as I understand from those who do play both.

yes. i wish i could play more actual board diplomacy, but i have few friends near me that play it, so i use this site instead
Oh, yeah, that works wonders as well. That's not something you can fix right away, though. It takes some time to build that. So I figured I would name more immediate things in my posts. But focus on that while you play.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
13 Sep 11 UTC
yes, i realize that. were you refering to me in a negative way by that comment
I realize fix was a bad choice of words, haha. I mean that where you can implement the other things listed here in the very next game you play, getting widespread name recognition here would take a while. Nothing negative meant about it. :)

Iceland...
Iceland is not in its proper position on the WebDiplomacy map (meaning that it is not that close to England in actuality), so why would it even be included on the map if it serves no other purpose. WHY IS IT THERE?

Annoying Player Help
A friend of mine playing web diplomacy told me he had a player called King Atom in his game, but feels the player is very annoying and wants help dealing with the problem. Is there any way to kick a player out of a game or block them from joining a public game for future reference.

Games paused?
I may have missed the thread on this, but is there any way for a mod to now unpause the games that have been put on pause since the glitch has happened at least 24 hours ago? In world games where there are a fair few who have already CDed, it would be great to get moving!

I swear I run a shelter for battered kittens IRL
A lot of people who are asshats online use the excuse that IRL they are real good people. Why is this considered a valid excuse? Is it because of the perceived anonymity of the web, like road rage? If you wouldn't call someone a faggot IRL, why would you do it here?

This could be the best RTS I've ever played. It's like a wonderful mix of Ascendancy, EVE, Homeworld, and Supreme Commander. Still need to play some more to see if it's my number one, but it looks promising. Anyone else play this?

Guessing game
So I got home from one social event, few beers were unlucky enough to meet my stomach and so on. Then I got hungry and fried me 7 late-night eggs. The problem was I forgot I wasn't supposed to feed the whole family as usually but only myself, yet I used the same amount of oil and butter. The eggs literally swam in grease. Of course I ate them, I'm a pig/scrooge, but what will my intestines say? To find out whether there is any consensus on this complicated subject, I propose a guessing game.

How common is soloing without backstabbing?
I've been in the endgame a few times with a strong position, but I hate the idea of turning on someone I've been working with since turn 1. It just... it's a terrible bad vibe, y'know? You have a good time playing together for a couple hours, coordinating, etc, I don't want to stab after that.

Other players might make poor tactical moves or fight at bad times, but how common is solo-winning based on that? Are people who try to not stab their allies consigned to lots of draws?

Just wanted everybody to know i have just won my first game here. I'm happy and was actually thinking of doing an AAR, but perhaps that is going just a tad too far? I don't know, is that the done thing? You tell me.

Am I Alone In Defying this?
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/why-men-dont-fancy-funny-women-525001.html

If I EVER were to fall for a woman, it'd HAVE to be the smartest, wittiest, most unique gal I could find...even if she had a beard or third eye.
Just curious, since we have a lot of married me--careful what you say!--and bachelors...am I the only one who'd put brain-size over...?
