Utopia
Thomas Moore's book (which I am about to start reading) represents what is in his view, a Utopian society. Given this book was written almost 500 years ago, there is no doubt that Moore's ideas are outdated and maybe in some case perceived as unethical in our society.

Sp, my question for all would be, say you were the author of Utopia, what would be the setting of your book?

How to make and keep alliances
I am wondering what people feel are the best ways to make and keep alliances. Seeing as they are almost necessary to win, i want to know some experienced players' advice and tips on them.

Iceland...
Iceland is not in its proper position on the WebDiplomacy map (meaning that it is not that close to England in actuality), so why would it even be included on the map if it serves no other purpose. WHY IS IT THERE?

I'm being serious here...
ulytau (541 D)

That's an issue of map projection but if we assume the map is supposed to have parallels parallel with its edges, it's difficult to distinguish the real problem. The northern tip of Norway is 6 degrees further to the north than the middle of Iceland in reality but they have practically similar latitude in webdip map.
ulytau (541 D)
11 Sep 11 UTC
Well, now that I looked closer I can safely say that the map is NOT supposed to have parallels parallel to its edges, Iceland would be so far west that way that it would not be present. I also think that the map is shorter from Livonia to the north than in reality so the gap between Britain and Iceland is noticeably smaller than in reality.

Clyde I think.

Yes, Clyde, Edinburg would have access to NAO if it owned Iceland. Just like Ireland can't be part of Clyde but has to be under Liverpool.

As I understand it, Europe itself didn't even exist in the Spring of 1901. The Atlantic Ocean ran right up to Asia and it wasn't until late spring/early fall before the entire continent floated up out of the depths of the ocean and merged itself with Asia to create one large block of land.

Mr. Calhammer and anyone in cahoots with him seriously need to buy bigger prescription goggles if you ask me. Kinda sad because I expected that the upcoming "Diplomacy the movie" would make these kind of gross mistakes.

No, wait, I got it.

It would be like Jumanji. Seven people sit down to a game of Dip and get transported to 1901 Europe and find themselves actually waging WWI. That could actually be pretty good.

+1 Abge. Bjork could provide the moody soundtrack, to keep up the Icelandic theme. The movie would win a Golden Lion at Venice and make $500K in the States at coastal arthouses.

Iceland is the conscience of Europe. I've seen games where Iceland takes the color of any country that was last stabbed. It actually approached Europe during the pre-WWI period because it felt something was wrong and tried to helP.
I think yellow is the best color for Iceland.

Ism't it funny just how green Iceland is and just how icy Greenland is?
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
13 Sep 11 UTC
That is due to a trick by the vikings so people would go to greenland and they would have iceland to themselves.

A more true accounting having nothing to do with Vikings tricking people (urban legend, my friend) can be found here:

Not an insult at all. I happen to think the Inuit are a great nomadic peace loving people. Vikings wewre great explorewrs and they were also rather brutal and brutish in their treatment of others. These are facts and I just stated my preference towards the peacemakers rather than the warmongers. I'm more Vulcan and less Klingon (the Inuit and the Vikings were the inspiration for these two races in Trek).

I've listened to the original radio play, read the books based off thre radioa play (one of the few times a radio play inspired a series of novels), and seen the BBC series based on the books based on the radio play. And yes, I have seen that abomination of a movie that pretty much should have never been made.

I had heard a different story.

It wasn't to decrease immigration to Iceland, Iceland was named Iceland prior to the findings of Greenland. However when Greenland was founded, the vikings named it Greenland to encourage immigration.

That is the story i heard.
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Sep 11 UTC
In a way, that's true. But Eric the Red had been banished from Iceland for three years and went to live in Greenland. When he came back, he truly believed Greenland to be his new homa and invited people to come along. Just as in their immigration to celand, the vikings believed land was free and for the taking. They didn't charge their friends and sell them land, but gave it to them. And what was available in Greenland at the time was superior to what was left for the taking in Iceland.

Annoying Player Help
A friend of mine playing web diplomacy told me he had a player called King Atom in his game, but feels the player is very annoying and wants help dealing with the problem. Is there any way to kick a player out of a game or block them from joining a public game for future reference.

Games paused?
I may have missed the thread on this, but is there any way for a mod to now unpause the games that have been put on pause since the glitch has happened at least 24 hours ago? In world games where there are a fair few who have already CDed, it would be great to get moving!

A lot of people who are asshats online use the excuse that IRL they are real good people. Why is this considered a valid excuse? Is it because of the perceived anonymity of the web, like road rage? If you wouldn't call someone a faggot IRL, why would you do it here?

Guessing game
So I got home from one social event, few beers were unlucky enough to meet my stomach and so on. Then I got hungry and fried me 7 late-night eggs. The problem was I forgot I wasn't supposed to feed the whole family as usually but only myself, yet I used the same amount of oil and butter. The eggs literally swam in grease. Of course I ate them, I'm a pig/scrooge, but what will my intestines say? To find out whether there is any consensus on this complicated subject, I propose a guessing game.

How common is soloing without backstabbing?
I've been in the endgame a few times with a strong position, but I hate the idea of turning on someone I've been working with since turn 1. It just... it's a terrible bad vibe, y'know? You have a good time playing together for a couple hours, coordinating, etc, I don't want to stab after that.

Other players might make poor tactical moves or fight at bad times, but how common is solo-winning based on that? Are people who try to not stab their allies consigned to lots of draws?
