Cede territories/countries?
I am playing a face-to-face game of diplomacy with some folks.
Those playing as Russia and Turkey say that those playing as Germany and Italy "ceded" their entire countries to them.
Germany and Italy agree, but the rest of us don't like the idea.
I was under the impression that if you leave your country, you go into civil disorder and others must MOOVE UNITS to claim the land PHYSICALLY. Can you confirm/clarify? Thanks.

Battlemaster is an awesome game that is at least worth a look at www.battlemaster.org. It is a medieval based game where you are a knight. It really should be tried by everyone.

Choosing a country?
What do you people think of the possibility of having an option to choose the country you wish to play (before the game begins) in the next edition of phpDiplomacy? Would it be a practical idea?

Take Over This CD!
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=10447

Austria and Russia are both in Civil Disorder due to banned accounts. Please take over those players; they're in good positions and without them Turkey is sure to win without a contest. And that's boring. Thanks.

Picking up a CD is for suckers.
Apparently, nobody wants to work with the guy who tried to step in and make their game better. Apparently, all I did was walk into my own death. Well, see if I ever pick up a CD again. I no longer have any sympathy for anybody who is in a game with a CD player. You would just kill the new guy anyway.

When is a game broken?
Do people think that in certain situations, when multi-accounts are banned, the game should be nullified rather than paused? This is not necessarily going to happen, I'm just interested.
I've had a number of recent requests for me to force-draw games where multi's have caused certain powers to be far stronger than they should, thus unbalancing the game.

Paused games.
Its about two games "Doublecross 2" and "Political Casualty". They are paused because one of the players had a double account. I asked the remaining players to unpause but some dont. I hope one of the GM sees it and unpause them.

A Diplomacy Game Should Always Result In A Draw
by Richard Hucknall
Why should Diplomacy games never be won? Well, first of all I should mention that this statement is based on several assumptions. They are that there should be no NMRs or dropouts, thus eliminating the big advantage often given to other players as a result of these occurrences. Furthermore, every player should always play for the best possible result for himself at all times, taking into consideration the position he is in at the time. This latter statement is a little difficult to explain.

Clearly we all start a new game hoping to win - any other objective (i.e. to help or stop another playing from winning) is unfair on the remaining players. These hopes are often dashed quite early on and so a new target has to be formulated; and it is here that the divergence of opinion begins. My own view is that if it is no longer possible to win then one should play to prevent anyone else from winning and try to survive to participate in a draw. Incidentally, I don't recognise two-way, three-way or even four-way "wins" - these are clearly drawn games although some people try to pretend otherwise. There can only be one winner and that is the player who gains 18 centres, or the player who has victory conceded to him by the other players, although often victory by concession is premature. However, I digress. There is a school of thought that if one cannot win then the next best result is 2nd place followed by 3rd place and so on. I don't subscribe to this idea as 2nd place is defeat at the hands of the victor. However, survival (with no matter how few units) in a draw is a result sharing the spoils with the other survivors. You haven't been beaten by anyone.

So given seven players who are all playing for the best possible result (win, followed by a draw featuring as few players as possible), and that these players do not miss a deadline, then I submit that the game will end in a 3 or 4 way draw. Normally, the first few years see a couple of countries out and two or three strong powers emerge. It is at this point that the major powers must beware. Not only must they try to extend their own empire, but they must take care that another power does not develop at a greater rate and reach a position where he can make a grab for the final centres for victory. In fact, given that all players are playing for the best possible result, the game rapidly reaches a stalemate. I'm sure that this theory is correct, but proving it conclusively is a little difficult.

I have reviewed all my completed games (fortunately I survived in all of them) and each one can be shown to prove the theory correct. In all the games hat I have won I can point to moments quite late in the game where I could have been held to a draw. Similarly, I have been involved in several draws where either my opponents have finally come together to stop me from winning, or where I have joined with former enemies to stop another from winning.

However, Diplomacy is all about personalities when all is said and done. In so many games, players refuse to forgive and forget stabs earlier in the game or even in different games. Consequently the required co-operation is not there when it is needed most and the chance for a draw is gone. The moral is, get to know your fellow players. Are they reliable? Will they hold a grudge? Are they of the 2nd place is better than a 4-way draw school of thought. Their attitude is of great importance to the way you play your game.

Hmmm. There can be a number of reasons for that.
Draugnar (0 DX)

My take and reason for posting it is that he points out that a perfectly played game will end in a draw. It's only personalities that get in the way and allow a win.

You might want to check out 'The Odd Theory' .
i find this to be common sense -- of course it should end in a draw

and of course no one plays perfectly -- that is the wholeeee pointttt of playing (-try to break the equilibrium)

I have to agree that a perfectly-played game will end in a draw.

OMGNSO (415 D)

And of course there is the question of what sort of draw results from perfect play. I doubt it is 7 way, since an alliance structure must develop.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Games are won because a player has made a mistake. Of course, the winner often has encouraged them to make that mistake, and so will deserve credit for it.

However, if everyone plays properly, a three or possibly four way draw should result. Bigger draws are generally unstable- a power can be eliminated without risking a player winning- as are two ways, because when the third power is eliminated you need to move straight into a stalemate, where the third power's actions cannot break it.

I had an 18-16 four-way game where my opponent ate his ally and his stupid ally let him rather than accepting our demands. So he got eliminated, I and my ally got a survive, and the big bad ally got the win. Idiot wanted an SC behind our lines if he was to fight back even thought we promiseed to support his every fight and make certain no matter what he stayed alive. He could have gotten a survive at a minimum, but instead decided to die for the cause. That was a stupid way to play and NOT in the spirit of the game.
RiffArt (1299 D)

To be fair Draugnar, promises in this game aren't worth the paper they're written on... and given that they're not written on real paper, that means they're not worth an awful lot. An S.C. behind your lines is a valuable thing.

Obviously I don't know the details of the game, but it's plausible that if he had fought back perhaps you and your ally could/would/should have achieved a 17+ centre stalemate and forced a 3-way draw without him in it, his play could well be justifiable. As I said, it would depend on the details, but simply from what you've written, your conclusion cannot be drawn.
My take on this article is that the author is presuming 7 people of equal skill. That will not always be the case, and more of these games can be won if you can find the weaker player.

"Clearly we all start a new game hoping to win ." I don't believe this is true for everyone. Some play for points, some play for draws first and wins second. Some play for honor; accepting 2nd place without a stab, in the hopes (even if unstated) that there will be a quid pro quo in another game), because the player is trustworthy. Or accepting a draw when they are in the position to win, in the hope that it is remembered in another game.) Playing for a draw can be seen to be less risky than playing for a win. If players playing for a draw first and win second can find others of similar playing styles, they can affect the outcome of a game before it even starts.

(And please note, the above is not meant to denigrate any player or style of play; it is solely for the furtherance of intellectual discussion. Please don't take it otherwise.)
Chrispminis (916 D)

Diplomacy is rarely played perfectly between equally matched players, so while many games might end in a draw, it should be no surprise that a lot of them also end as solo's.

Riff, he was on my front lines and I was forced to keep a localized stalemate with him while his ally ate him from behind. I was Turkey, he was France, my ally was Austria, his was England. Russia, Italy, and Germany had been consumed.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 May 09 UTC
He literally abandoned his rear SCs and moved things out of his way while making certain I could break the line in time. I was one phase from taking Tun, his SC, when his ally took it. But had he wanted to live, I would have supported him into a nearby ally SC of OURS, just not one behind the lines. One I could have protected to keep him in the game and get him a four way draw.

The thing about diplomacy is there is no "right" way to play it. The name of the game is to talk out the best result you can try and get... "Real" diplomacy doesnt exist in any form
On the game box, depending on the edition, it says 'Cunning negotiation and deceit' or 'A Game of International intrigue, trust and treachery'.
