Game Variant: Declaration of war
I wanted to check the opinions (and maybe gather people interested) to try out something. Haven't check if such variants are already out there and have been tested - would appreciate all feedback.

What ever happened with Hicham and Tux (12966 and 12967)?
There was a post earlier today that is completely gone about their suspicious consecutive numbers and they nearly every game one is in, so is the other. That post is no where to be found although older ones that haven't had new messages since then are. So what happened?

phpDip Mobile?
Anyone have trouble accessing this from a phone? I'm using a Blackberry Storm 9530 and whenever I view a game board my chat just appears as a long list instead of having its own window with its own scroll-bar. It will go behind the map, so if I haven't talked with the person much their message gets hidden. Then it will continue down, overlapping with order information, etc. as far down as it has to.

Anyone else had anything like this? More importantly, anyone know the fix?

Lots of small-pot WTA games
I'm setting up a bunch of small-pot WTA games, with various point-levels and timescales. Anyone wanting to play WTA is invited to join some. If too many take off, then I'll CD out of a few; I can't really cope with more than five turn finishes per day.

What are your favorite and least favorite countries to play as and why?
Favorite: France. You've got good sea room for fleets, and it has excellent position on defense. I was attacked by both England and Germany at the beginning of the last game I won. I was able to fight my way back up my country by myself and eventually win. First country I ever played as well.

Meta-gaming in the Leagues...
Inevitable, essential?

I think the answer is yes and that we should embrace it as part of a very special variant. I have come to this decision after a lot of thought. Each game has to be played in the context of League position and it has been fascinating because of this. It was suggested to me by a Master of this game that we are playing two games simultaneously: the individual games and the League table itself. I think that captures the situation very well.

However, I have another question: with Group C capable of putting two players into the top League for the next round, are we already metagaming for these places?

Even with the lower groups, we are still able to offer help with regards to draws, wipe-outs etc...

I would like to think that through the Leagues, which bring a real intensity to the play, we can exorcise the ghost of meta-gaming by just accepting it.

It is still all about WTA. First is first and second is nowhere.

We have had this discussion. In our final league game in my division I was killed immediately for no other reason than my league position. I didn't take any offence.

GFDT carries the same problem to a lesser degree. Heres an interesting secenairio for you:
My final GFDT game has three remaining players.at about equal strength. The requirement for qualification into the second round is slightly above a 3-way draw. They both were defeated in their other game. Thus neither of them will accept a 3 way draw. I have already qualified and hold a kingmaker position. I thus choose which player makes it into the second round. I could make that choice based on which player I think it would be more helpful to build trust in case we are in the second round together (which isn't unlikely).

But here's the fun part: Since I've already qualified, I could technically just throw the game. If I get defeated then both of the other players would qualify. Thus earning goodwill and a reputation as a self-sacrificing ally. This also increases the chances of me being in the second round with one of them. If my ultimate goal was winning the tournament, this would actually be the most rational response to the situation.

Of course, thats taking it a little far. I think there are unwritten rules that still need to be abided by. Minor meta-gaming like league shuffling should be embraced, but a line needs to be drawn.

Re the League metagaming issue
how about blatant, I will support you into A in game 2 if you support me into B in game 3 ? Isn't that going way too far?

I think the league scoring system could be reworked a bit to discourage draws. The GFDT scoring system might go too far the other way where it is better to lose with many Sc than to draw. but then again 15-17sc(just losing) is better than 9-12sc that you might have in a 3way draw so maybe its quite fair.

sean. The problem with reworking the scoring system is that I don't see that it would work:

If a win becomes more valuable, everyone will make damn sure the leader doesn't win, and the leader will fear tall poppy syndrome.
If a win becomes less valuable, it is easier for a player just to take draws all the time and then they still get alot of points.

The calibre of players that you see in the league along with the conservative nature of a four or five game season will inevitably make things rather draw-ish, because a best played WTA game should end in a draw.

As for meta-gaming, I agree with sean that "I will support you into A in game 2 if you support me into B in game 3" or "I will let you win in game A if you let me win in game B" is indeed going too far.

Having draw points as in the leagues, except worth more (34=win rather than 12), and then SC points as in the league tie-breaker and summing them might give an interesting system, however the leagues are about WTA, so I shall stick with what we have.

Trying to set up games
I have been looking around for standard time gams (24 hours or something like that) but all I find are games with 5-10 point buyins. If anyone wants to try something a little more serious(40-60 points) post here. I made a game before but no one had joined it so it seems to me all the interest is either in tiny point games or in 100+ point games that I don't realy want to play yet.
