Hi all, Does anybody here know about DipTool and if so, is there any way to connect it to a game running here on php? Thanks.

Actually, I was thinking about your post the other day. Do you think it' possible that Nigel Short created this Fischer story so that he could go on the net as a "guest" and have fun with the rest of us? There's a good chance you played Fischer. There's also a chance you played Nigel Short, or one of his friends in on the game... I have a hard time believing that Short, close to being the World Champion at one point, would have such a difficult time defeating anybody who opened up with all the pawns moving forward one square.

I'll be you played Nigel.

Then I could easily see Fischer going onto the net and smoking the innocents.

Thank you very much for the game, DipperDon. I will enjoy a rematch anytime you like.

Haha... I suck.
And honestly I know almost no terminology, but sure.
I'll let you go first.

I am so screwed lol.

Okay... I'm not a chess-bully! I mean to say, I'm honored to play with you.

1. e4

You can use any resource you like. ICC and chessgames.com can give you good runthroughs on things, openings and DipperDon is good too = the last game was luck more than anything.

Anyway, just thanks. I live in a small town and don't get to play very often.

quick question on the nam system you use though.

how do you know which piece was moved, and from where to where?

does e4 mean you moved the piece at e4 somewhere else or moved a piece to e4?

lol bit of a noob when it comes to over-the-web play
DipperDon (6457 D)

if a pawn is moved forward you just say the square it moves to. So e4 means the pawn on e file is moved forward to rank 4.

Oh, no. Thucydides, these are great questions. And I hope it's okay; I love to talk about it. The old notation (pre-1950s) used a descriptive notation:

1. King's Knight to King's Knight Three
1. ... King's Pawn to King's Pawn Four

You can see the confusion and smell the many fallen trees in the grand name of long chess books.

Bobby Fischer was an amazing person in that he, and those who followed him, really changed the way piece notation was written. The first name of the piece comes before the square it moves to. For instance, Nc3. A knight that can move to c3 moves to that square. Where the piece comes from is not as important as where it goes because 95% of the time it resolves itself. Only pawn, knights, and rooks have a chance for going to one square from a differing starting point. Sometimes you need a little more, so you give a square designation to the peace. If both knights can go to c3, you say which file it comes from:

Nbc3 or
Ncc3

Either the knight on file b or the knight on file c went to the square c3.

If that's still confusing, you number the square instead. If a knight on the a-file (one knight on a2 and one knight on a4) moves to c3:

N2c3 or
N4c3

Pawns are different. You don't have to say the name of a moving pawn (though some do, it's just assumed). e4 for instance

e4

(the e-file pawn moved to the e4 square)

If a pawn captures...

You know I'd rather clarify these as we go. If I had a board to put in front of you and I could show you, I know you'd see it as very simple because you're *very* good at this diplomacy game.

Also, I can write an encyclopedia on chess strategy and history, and, again, I LOVE to talk about it. So if you have any questions, please ask.

I hope I haven't scared you away. :-)

Convoy Rules
If a fleet is convoying an army and is attacked, does the convoy fail? Assume that the attack is by only one naval unit, so it does not win the territory.

Issue with convoy?
The army at London move to Holland via convoy via convoy.
The fleet at North Sea convoy from London to Holland.
Why does it say via convoy TWICE?
Will that affect the result?

Question
Is there any way to resign a game? I joined a game not knowing it would be played under rules I wasn't familiar with. The first set of moves is not yet due, if that makes any difference. The game in question is: http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8823

A couple of noob questions
Is there any sort of move simulator so I can see how various orders would resolve?

For the specific instance I'm thinking of, if there are fleets in Denmark and Kiel, which (if either) are considered adjacent to Berlin? I think Kiel is but Denmark isn't, but I'm not sure.
