Daggers-simple, fitting, recommended by the greatest, Edi Birsan. It's official, from here on D will now be Daggers(note the air of arrogance from my statement).

New Diplomacy "System"
This is a piece I wrote that was inspired by the article in Diplomacy World 104 about the Central Powers System. It proposes what I believe is a new way of thinking about the Diplomacy board, or at least a way that hasn't been expressed in these terms before. Let me know what you think.

Retreats

It sounds a bit strange that a unit retreating would be able to conquer a new province...

An odd thought
In Spring '01, you're doing something wrong if everyone doesn't think you're on their side.
In Fall '01, you're doing something wrong if everyone still thinks you're on their side.

Russian Gas
Hi all. I don't know much about the issue, and living in the UK I would guess most of the news has rather an anti-Russian bias to it. Most of what I've read has been implying that Russia is trying to blackmail Europe into paying higher rates for gas. How's, or indeed is, this being reported in other parts of the world?

2 billion orders?
I don't think so...
Jacob (2466 D)

Supposedly there have been 2 BILLION plus orders input on this site. I really have a hard time believing that:

There are 4340 completed games and 371 active games at the time of this writing. The maximum number of orders each turn is 34. Let’s say that every single turn had a retreat phase with 10 units retreating/disbanding and let's say every single fall there are 15 build orders. Let’s also assume that each game goes until 1915.

That means in the 30 turns of the game there would be 1020 orders, 300 retreats/disbands, and 225 builds. That’s a grand total of 1545 orders per game.

4711 games times 1545 orders equals 7,278,495 orders.

Now maybe some of the data is no longer visible and there are games on the system that I don’t know about. I’ve only been on the site for 3 months. This site has only been around for a little over a year, right? Let’s call it two years to be safe. And if there were this many orders in every other three-month period that I don’t know about then I need to multiply my figure by 8 to find the 2-year grand total of orders.

7,278,495 time 8 equals 58,227,960 orders.

Hmmm…still not there. Ok, maybe each BOX counts as a separate order so that North Sea convoy from Edinburgh to Norway really counts as three orders instead of one? I’ll multiply my result by three just to be safe.

58,227,960 times 3 equals 174,683,880.

Obviously, many of the estimates I made were grossly exaggerated so, no, I don’t believe there have been 2 billion orders input. However, I think it would really be cool if there had been so I’d like to know how it is possible that there have really been that many orders.

Anybody know?

You don't find your job very stimulating? ;)
figlesquidge (2131 D)

There have been around 6500 games - the GameID of the most recent one would tell you that. Still, I am also interested, it seems I may have grossly misunderstood. An interesting thread though!

I'm at home right now watching a preschool program called Caillou on TV with my daughter. I certainly wouldn't call it stimulating =)

I hate that whiney little kid!! (Caillou, not your daughter ;-)

I did my own math on the original thread before I saw this one. Here's how it worked out for me (not too far off from yours actually)

<Begin copy>
now lets think about the number of orders - now that our math brains have woken up a bit.

7949 is the highest game ID, let's call it 8000 games knowing that it will be a slight over estimate. Each year has 2 diplomacy phases with 7 people and 34 units to order, that 476 orders per year for diplomacy. Say SCs are trading a lot and they average 2 builds / destroys per person per build phase, and maybe 10 units have to retreat each retreat phase.

That gives an additional 48 orders per year, or about 525 total orders per year. If the average game end date is 1914, then that means at most 7350 orders per game (people will have died out prior to this, complicating slightly the estimates, but I'm just seeing if we're in the ball park of 2B)
let's just round that up to 8000 too to make the math real simple - relalizing we going for an upper limit here.

that 64M. Maybe Jacob is right. Unless someone thinks I underestimated anything (I was purposely trying to over estimate)

All the games I've seen average at 1920 for ending, but thats just me xD
philcore (317 D(S))
13 Jan 09 UTC
it was pointed out by dangermouse that the 34 orders per turn will always be split between the 7 people, so it's not correct to multiply the two as I did. So that would have made for 116 Total orders a year, not 525, giving 1624 per game and only 13 million total orders, not 64M

I'd be willing to stretch the update button thought to say it increases the order of magnitude, but that's still only 100 millionish.

we cannot have possibly reached 2 billion orders. not even messages. i don't believe in this either

even if there are like 10,000 games played, that would be over 100,000 messages per game... or 2,000 per player conversation? and yet there are people complaining that the games lack diplomacy! :-)

On another website before a player starts a game he has to agree to a statement of intent . Do you think this would help especially with the youngsters here?

Refusal to Pause
I've been trying to get my games paused so I can go on a trip this week and some people haven't voted for pauses yet (despite logging on). I'm not accusing anyone of malicious intent, but it brings up a hypothetical question. What happens if someone refuses to pause because you are killing them? Is that not-allowed? Is it simply frowned upon? Is it a legitimate tactic?

Admin: I need to leave a game
I need to be removed from a game (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8026), as there is a conflict that I need to address OOG. I don't want to throw the game from the very beginning, and the first turn hasn't taken place. Can anyone advise on how this could be done (I'm germany, BTW)?

Can Mods Please Draw Game ID#7771
Has been paused since a multi was found to be playing several countries in the game, remaining players decided to draw due to the influence of the multi making the game's results questionable. Unfortunately someone who joined as a replacement player for one of the removed multis has not logged on since joining (a week now) and since the game is paused, there's no CD to take care of it or anything.

Mods, please help
I joined a game by accident (took over CD Russia, clicked on take over instead of 'Open Game'), can the mods remove me from the game? I'm at my (personal) limit for how many games I want to play at once so I won't be able to pay any attention to this one really. I'd like there to be a chance for someone else to take it sooner than I could let it go CD.
