A Public Announcement
Dear Feckless Clod,

As promised, here is a formal statement regarding your game "Grab Your Partners" (not sure if innuendo is was intended). The game has ended in a crushing landslide victory by the solo kid, Harry Noballs.

Best Wishes,

Rank System - RANKS!
I posted this in the Rank system vote thread, but I think it will get looked over, so I've copy and pasted it below. If we can implement an ELO system without having to eliminate the point system, this is what it might look like...

"The question is not who will make the best Veep, but the better Commander in Chief of the two... For one reason or another there is a high probability that either of them will get the job after all."

Not NEARLY as high as the probability of the PRESIDENT getting the job!!! Seriously - someone even said "President Biden" well guess what, in order for you to get "President Biden" you first have to suffer through at least some period of time with the most socialist president to ever have the job and HOPE he dies in office? Why not vote for the President instead? Biden didn't win Obama did.

I also find it rediculous for republicans to even attempt to frame Obama as elitist. Anyone who has the slight amount of knowledge as to the acquisition of funds and support (or even comparative policies) knows that they not only accusing him wrongly, but are they are accusing him of their own faults. There's a reason that only Obama is commited to reigning in the perverse incentives which arise from excessive lobbyist influence over politicians.

And at the same time, how can anyone who publicly states that only an income of 2.5 million qualifies you as rich and is simultaneously unaware of how many properties he owns target his rival as elitist? (that would be 7. 7 multimillion dollar properties, by the way. But when asked: "I think... I'll have my staff get to you") Just how far removed from the reality of 99+ percent of American is McCain?

I watched the RNC last night and I also have to say that, among other thing, I found it particularly absurd that Michael Steele could lable entire nations and religious subscribers as "Evil." For someone to be able to deliver the most narrow minded ethnocentric speech to cheering crowds is actually frightening.

And through out the entire night, where was the discussion of the issues which actually comprise the difference between McCain and Obama? You know, the positions upon which one is supposed to be able to differentiate and decide between the two candidates??

I loved how in Sarah Palin's speech she continually blasted Obama on experience and how he has not helped in any significant legislation.

Last time i looked, her record wasnt the most impressive either. Also, Obama has reached to republicans to get laws passed which he co-sponsored.

And on a side note, the speech seemed to lack any real substance. one final point. Working to better a community really shows how much you dont understand the plights of the lower classes. And all of the candidates have more money than most Americans...so maybe they are all elitist
valoishapsburg (314 D)

(And I understand that she's running as VP and so her credentials dont matter as much, but its the principle of the matter)

valoishapsburg (314 D)

that i'll agree with.
Palin will win the frumpy housewife vote, the June Cleaver vote, the hockey mom vote... it will be a landslide!

McCain will win the ackward smilers and hand holders vote. They'll get nearly 90% come November!

healthcare
RoteBaron (192 D)
04 Sep 08 UTC
yeah, healthcare's an obvious one, but it's more than just the complete nationalization of any given industry - it's the socialist mindset that believes that the government can take care of it's citizens better than the citizens can take care of themselves. Listen to him talk - between all the hope change hope change hope change drivel, he is constantly talking about how much the government should be doing for people. Kinda the anti-Kennedy when you think about it.

He talks more of equlity of outcome than equality of opportunity. "It's not fair that some people are rich while others aren't" kinda talk. I thought aspiring to success is exactly what made and continues to make America great. Sure it stems from greed or some desire to have great wealth, but from that desire, industries are grown and people are put to work so that they can continue the cycle of prosperity.

to think that Teachers should make as much as CEOs because it's just not "fair" that they don't considering the impact teachers have on our future as a country is a socialist concept, because it clearly defies the capitalist idea about supply and demand. Lot's of people are qualified to teach and willing to teach at the going rate. Very few people are qualified to run a billion dollar business with thousands of employees and willing to work for less than the millions they get paid

Like it or not that's Capitalism and the opposite of that is Socialism. It's clear to me that Obama would be the closest to that ideal than anyone else in our nations history, but if the majority votes him in, then I'm cool with it, because I also believe in democracy! The other thing that makes America great

"they are the elite

does anyone buy their crap?"

well, yes. mccain may be rich but that doesnt mean he's elite. also, i dont consider john mccain "republican." i just think its the mainstream party closest to his positions. instead of being a "republican" he just uses common sense. and... believe it or not... common sense often points to the right. NOT ALWAYS before you roast me, which is why mccain also defies the republicans from time to time. i am voting for mccain, not the republicans.
MajorTom (4417 D)
05 Sep 08 UTC
thucydides, this is because, thankfully, american society and therefore politics has a progressive direction. thus to be electable republicans have to be liberal enough to have a shot at the deciding swing votes. the republican party's conservative base can only be expected to lag behind. unfortunatly for them it's typically to little avail seeing as the party knows they are secure votes.

and "common sense" is subjective, your definition is by no means universal.

I was on the fence for a while, keeping an open mind and all that... but the mere fact that McCain would choose a VP like Palin as a cheap political stunt to try for the disgruntled clinton supporters' votes, shows his disregard for the honor and responsibility that an office in the white house represents.

It shows that he was not confident enough of his own policies and stands to persuade the majority of the american voters that he would make the best president of the two choices. and instead of choosing a running mate who could really contribute to his term in office (in whatever way a VP can), he chose someone because they had tits, despite her obvious inexperience and repeated poor judgement while in office.

as long as I'm ranting, i would also like to call any clinton supporters who are now voting for McCain because clinton lost, big fucking babies. despite the fact that 90% of Obama's and Clinton's policies and platforms were identical. they are going to support someone who advocates many, many policies that hillary condemned...and they are going to support him out of sheer spite. childish...infuriatingly childish
Tetra0 (1448 D)

that said, i also support Obama for his platform (or most of it), not just because of my newfound disdain for McCain (and my mad rhyming skillz)

I would say that these so called ex clinton supporting female democrats who wont vote for obama to be more of a media invention than reality. the media thrives on conflict.
Tetra0 (1448 D)
05 Sep 08 UTC
it's possible. but i've seen a few interviews (but to be fair the one i'm thinking of was on the daily show), and i've also found some websites that support what i've said
sean (3490 D(B))
05 Sep 08 UTC
Oh i have no doubt that the media can find people like that...whether they are a significant numbers is what i doubt.
plus with palin stance on abortion, gun control and the role of the church should turn off most clinton supporters
MajorTom (4417 D)
05 Sep 08 UTC
I completly agree sean, this conflict and tension from clinton voters and their so called "indecision" is so blown out of proportion that it's practically generated by the media.

Clinton had whole-heartedly endorsed Obama many times before the convention. The idea that she might be holding strong to her votes or declare insincere support has been long dead.

After once again reaffirming this at the DNC, I hope this issue has finally been put to rest.

I need a favour from someone in the UK
My company is setting up operations in Britain. I've secured two freephone (toll free) numbers and need to test that they are working right, but a test can only be effected from within the UK and I know of no one who can do this for me.

If you're in the UK and are willing to telephone two freephone numbers for me, just to verify that they ring through properly, I would be most appreciative.

Drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll provide you this the freephone numbers.

And thanks. Yaniv

Ingame solution for multi-account?
I am strongly suspicious that france and turkey are the same person in a game I am playing:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5374

This is based on past game history and France trying to talk me down from attacking Turkey (its 1902). I'm Italy in this game and it makes sense for me to avoid fighting france but to follow through with my stab on turkey. Assuming they aren't kicked off (which they should be) or until then what am I expected to do? This throw the game into an unfortunate loop.

Skipped phase in "002b"?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5460 That's the URL. I think the current phase should be Autumn 1902, but there's a chance that I'm horribly mistaken. It now lists the current phase as Spring 1903. Will somebody check on that and make sure I'm not crazy?

Support?
I know this has come up before, but here goes. I want to move a fleet in Constantinople to Bulgaria(sc) with support from the Black Sea. From what I've read in the forum in the past, this is a valid support. The game, however, does not give me the option to support a move to Bulgaria(sc); only Bulgaria and Bulgaria(nc). This is regarding a move that will be processed in 24 hours, so time is a factor for responses.

Possible bug in game 5406
In game #5406, 'the greatest game ever told', shouldn't Tyrolia's attack on Munich in Autumn of 1902 have cut Munich's attack on Burgundy? Maybe it's changed since I last played, or maybe I'm just crazy.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

I might disappear for a few days
I'm sure many people have heard of the civil unrest here in Thailand incited by the PAD. There have been rumours that some protesters may attempt to cut Bangkok's power - if that happens I lose my access to the internet until it gets restored.

There was a clash between Government supporters and PAD protesters this morning and there was a death. The military did state that they would get involved soon afterwards. I do believe that since the rumours are so widespread that the military would be able to prevent it but I don't know for certain.

Anyways, my fingers are crossed that everything will be sorted out.

Surrendering
I'm GMing my first Diplomacy game in a while at another site, and I've received a request from one of my players that I'm not sure how to handle. The player in question has the low supply center count and is in a very precarious situation (current season is Summer 1904), and has requested that he surrender his territories and units to another nation that he is allied with rather than have them fall into the hands of the nations that are attacking him.

I know this isn't in the scope of the official rules, so I'm curious to know if there's any precedent for allowing something like this or not. (My inclination is to allow it, but I'd appreciate some direction from people more knowledgeable than myself.) :-)
