Hello Kestas.

Please, can I ask you to check the game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5294 and more especially the players Leon Rey17 (http://phpdiplomacy.net/profile.php?userID=6348) and Nephilm (http://phpdiplomacy.net/profile.php?userID=7764)

A Public Announcement
Dear Feckless Clod,

As promised, here is a formal statement regarding your game "Grab Your Partners" (not sure if innuendo is was intended). The game has ended in a crushing landslide victory by the solo kid, Harry Noballs.

Best Wishes,

Rank System - RANKS!
I posted this in the Rank system vote thread, but I think it will get looked over, so I've copy and pasted it below. If we can implement an ELO system without having to eliminate the point system, this is what it might look like...

WhiteSammy, the Halo 3 method of ranking is precisely where I've formulated my opinion for rankings here on phpDip. =D

I'm only a Lieutenant, Grade 1 though. :( I just don't have as much time to play as I'd like to. I usually play on Friday nights (EST) on the occassions I do make it online...I'll add you to my friends list. :)

I do like the divisions and subdivisions...and I think that's what Churchill was striving for, but I think it that's where the problem of not knowing which symbol was higher than the other came into play. I think it should be intuitive and not associated with anything military.

Churchill, send me an email and maybe we can collaborate on this. In the meantime, I'll work up a few more samples.

i understand that but i wasnt banking on just a purely halo themed system. i was going for something with symbols as basic as that while having a ranking system that was slightly complicated in an attempt to make it small but with plenty of room for competition.

WhiteSammy (132 D)

for example you have a level progression like this...
1) buttersticks(black)
2) arrows(green)
3) circle(blue)
4) stars(gold/yellow)
5) special things(redish/multicolored)

each level has its own color therefore i highly doubt that anyone could get confused.

and by spliting up the playing field like i mentioned into "beginners," everyone else, and the top players that keeps the amount of people in each major category fairly low. i would say that beginners makes up about 30ish(maybe more) percent of the website and the you have about a whopping 5 percent for the top players and the rest would fit into the middle(group 2, 3, and 4) section.

That way you should have roughly an even 10 percent, hypothetically, in the first three levels.
The middle section would have 9 levels therefore it should be around 7.2 percent per level.
The last section is adjustible: i have it set at a reasonable 20-10-1 but you can increase the section amount according to number of people playing.

i just think that by making smaller chunks and having those individual chunks with their own competition you make every part of the system competitive(not like the game itself isnt already).

Like I said, I agree with the divisions and subdivisions and I think we can implement something like that.

But as kestas mentioned, they need to be clearly distinguishable. The problem with buttersticks, arrows, circles and stars is that none of them are intuitively "higher" than the other. We'd be sort of relying on military ranks to deduct each symbols context...which I think is something we'd want to avoid.

I'm working on a few other variations that I will post soon.

I'd like to see daggers next to our names. The more you have the more you need to be feared...
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 Sep 08 UTC
Okay, here's a couple more (with all five versions together for easy comparison). I like the daggers idea flashman, but just adding daggers would clutter up the icon...so I themed "medals 5" (my personal favorite so far) with sharp, pointy edges. :)

4 and 5 may be a bit too intricate though...these are only samples as I'd like to see what ideas Churchill has too.
WhiteSammy (132 D)
04 Sep 08 UTC
hmmm...and what about space bc some people would have lines of daggers or even pages?

i think that the buttersticks(bars), arrows, stars, and top medals are all okay, its just that group 3 is tricky to find something for.
i went ahead with the circles bc you could say that the arrows are being "molded" into stars. (pretty creative stuff if i do say so myself)

Ok... what exactly are we working towards here because I was under the impression that we wanted a lot of ranks... but now people want less... and I'm just confused.

Liking Medals 4 and 5 Darwyn.
WhiteSammy (132 D)
04 Sep 08 UTC
well i still consider my suggestion as a solution to satisfying both groups of people(those for more ranks and those for less). The only thing is that each level has to be given a title and apparently better insignias than the ones i defaulted to
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 Sep 08 UTC
Well, let's say there's 12 ranks...we could then subdivide those 12 into either 3 groups of four (beginner, intermediate, advanced) or 4 groups of three...

12 ranks isn't terribly high and it's not small either...whatcha think? Kestas?
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 Sep 08 UTC
I like 4 and 5 too, Churchill...but they might be too intricate for a small icon. I can test them out at the appropriate size and tweak them accordingly.

Have you got any more ideas?
WhiteSammy (132 D)
04 Sep 08 UTC
that would be good but the only difference between out ideas is that i made a group at the very top that only consists of the tippity top players
for example the top 20
top 10 and the number one person
Maica (145 D)

I like group 4 the most, and 5 is a close second. the one thing is that for some reason group 4 reminds me a lot of a communist symbol, must be the red and the stars

You may have a small icon to be set behind (or front) of the name in the game listings & bigger medal which is visible in the player info

Darwyn, I think that this discussion has gotten very, very diluted. We need to get a smaller group (kestas, you, me, others) discussing this and coming to an agreement on what we want for the community. Feel free to email me (address in my profile).

I need a favour from someone in the UK
My company is setting up operations in Britain. I've secured two freephone (toll free) numbers and need to test that they are working right, but a test can only be effected from within the UK and I know of no one who can do this for me.

If you're in the UK and are willing to telephone two freephone numbers for me, just to verify that they ring through properly, I would be most appreciative.

Drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll provide you this the freephone numbers.

And thanks. Yaniv

Since i have always wondered what makes people think that something either has a 100% chance of being possible and shuns all those who dont think likewise or that something is completely impossible and cant believe that anyone in their right mind could believe something so far-fetched, I have a good one.

Ingame solution for multi-account?
I am strongly suspicious that france and turkey are the same person in a game I am playing:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5374

This is based on past game history and France trying to talk me down from attacking Turkey (its 1902). I'm Italy in this game and it makes sense for me to avoid fighting france but to follow through with my stab on turkey. Assuming they aren't kicked off (which they should be) or until then what am I expected to do? This throw the game into an unfortunate loop.

Skipped phase in "002b"?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5460 That's the URL. I think the current phase should be Autumn 1902, but there's a chance that I'm horribly mistaken. It now lists the current phase as Spring 1903. Will somebody check on that and make sure I'm not crazy?

Support?
I know this has come up before, but here goes. I want to move a fleet in Constantinople to Bulgaria(sc) with support from the Black Sea. From what I've read in the forum in the past, this is a valid support. The game, however, does not give me the option to support a move to Bulgaria(sc); only Bulgaria and Bulgaria(nc). This is regarding a move that will be processed in 24 hours, so time is a factor for responses.

Possible bug in game 5406
In game #5406, 'the greatest game ever told', shouldn't Tyrolia's attack on Munich in Autumn of 1902 have cut Munich's attack on Burgundy? Maybe it's changed since I last played, or maybe I'm just crazy.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

I might disappear for a few days
I'm sure many people have heard of the civil unrest here in Thailand incited by the PAD. There have been rumours that some protesters may attempt to cut Bangkok's power - if that happens I lose my access to the internet until it gets restored.

There was a clash between Government supporters and PAD protesters this morning and there was a death. The military did state that they would get involved soon afterwards. I do believe that since the rumours are so widespread that the military would be able to prevent it but I don't know for certain.

Anyways, my fingers are crossed that everything will be sorted out.

Surrendering
I'm GMing my first Diplomacy game in a while at another site, and I've received a request from one of my players that I'm not sure how to handle. The player in question has the low supply center count and is in a very precarious situation (current season is Summer 1904), and has requested that he surrender his territories and units to another nation that he is allied with rather than have them fall into the hands of the nations that are attacking him.

I know this isn't in the scope of the official rules, so I'm curious to know if there's any precedent for allowing something like this or not. (My inclination is to allow it, but I'd appreciate some direction from people more knowledgeable than myself.) :-)
