A Public Announcement
Dear Feckless Clod,

As promised, here is a formal statement regarding your game "Grab Your Partners" (not sure if innuendo is was intended). The game has ended in a crushing landslide victory by the solo kid, Harry Noballs.

Best Wishes,

I posted this in the Rank system vote thread, but I think it will get looked over, so I've copy and pasted it below. If we can implement an ELO system without having to eliminate the point system, this is what it might look like...

I need a favour from someone in the UK
My company is setting up operations in Britain. I've secured two freephone (toll free) numbers and need to test that they are working right, but a test can only be effected from within the UK and I know of no one who can do this for me.

If you're in the UK and are willing to telephone two freephone numbers for me, just to verify that they ring through properly, I would be most appreciative.

Drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll provide you this the freephone numbers.

And thanks. Yaniv

Since i have always wondered what makes people think that something either has a 100% chance of being possible and shuns all those who dont think likewise or that something is completely impossible and cant believe that anyone in their right mind could believe something so far-fetched, I have a good one.

Ingame solution for multi-account?
I am strongly suspicious that france and turkey are the same person in a game I am playing:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5374

This is based on past game history and France trying to talk me down from attacking Turkey (its 1902). I'm Italy in this game and it makes sense for me to avoid fighting france but to follow through with my stab on turkey. Assuming they aren't kicked off (which they should be) or until then what am I expected to do? This throw the game into an unfortunate loop.

Skipped phase in "002b"?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5460 That's the URL. I think the current phase should be Autumn 1902, but there's a chance that I'm horribly mistaken. It now lists the current phase as Spring 1903. Will somebody check on that and make sure I'm not crazy?

Support?
I know this has come up before, but here goes. I want to move a fleet in Constantinople to Bulgaria(sc) with support from the Black Sea. From what I've read in the forum in the past, this is a valid support. The game, however, does not give me the option to support a move to Bulgaria(sc); only Bulgaria and Bulgaria(nc). This is regarding a move that will be processed in 24 hours, so time is a factor for responses.

Possible bug in game 5406
In game #5406, 'the greatest game ever told', shouldn't Tyrolia's attack on Munich in Autumn of 1902 have cut Munich's attack on Burgundy? Maybe it's changed since I last played, or maybe I'm just crazy.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

I might disappear for a few days
I'm sure many people have heard of the civil unrest here in Thailand incited by the PAD. There have been rumours that some protesters may attempt to cut Bangkok's power - if that happens I lose my access to the internet until it gets restored.

There was a clash between Government supporters and PAD protesters this morning and there was a death. The military did state that they would get involved soon afterwards. I do believe that since the rumours are so widespread that the military would be able to prevent it but I don't know for certain.

Anyways, my fingers are crossed that everything will be sorted out.

Surrendering
I'm GMing my first Diplomacy game in a while at another site, and I've received a request from one of my players that I'm not sure how to handle. The player in question has the low supply center count and is in a very precarious situation (current season is Summer 1904), and has requested that he surrender his territories and units to another nation that he is allied with rather than have them fall into the hands of the nations that are attacking him.

I know this isn't in the scope of the official rules, so I'm curious to know if there's any precedent for allowing something like this or not. (My inclination is to allow it, but I'd appreciate some direction from people more knowledgeable than myself.) :-)

Password reset screwup
I was resetting someone's password when I screwed up a query, resetting everyone's password to the same thing. As luck would have it my local web server has screwed up thanks to an update which means I can't load the passwords from backup yet.

If you registered in the last few days unfortunately I don't have your password backed up, so you'll have to e-mail me at [email protected] so I can e-mail you a new password

Sorry for the inconvenience

I have just made this account to ask why I couldn't log on, but I guess that explains it...

When will our passwords be restored? And what happens if some of us have missed a turn in our games? I have at least one game where this could mean the difference between survival and elimination... :-/

Sounds good.

Good work with the site, by the way (excluding the password-glitch). Managing this site I'm sure you get too many complaints and too few encouragements. I for one appreciate your work immensely and spend far too much time in here for my own good ;)

Yep no-one needs to create new accounts; it'll just make looking for multi-accounters more confusing. I'm still getting my local web server working so I can transfer the old passwords back across, shouldn't take too long now.

Been there, done that. Let me guess

Update tblPassword
set UserPassword='asdfasdf'

And you forgot the where clause.
I once reset 25000 credit card holders passwords that way. Not my proudest moment. Luckily I got instant feedback when i submitted my query; where I expect '1 row(s) affected', I got '25000 row(s) affected.'

I had recent backups and was able to restore it before anyone knew the difference, except for the few dozen who had signed up on the last day, who got assigned random passwords. Sounds like you had the same luck, but you had to publicly announce it on a forum.

so even the banks use php. It should be easy to hack!

> And you forgot the where clause.
Actually because passwords use a salt and are hashed I find it easier to change my password, reset the other guy's password to mine, then change mine back. So I got the where clause right, but forgot the join clause, so it set all accounts passwords to mine.

> where I expect '1 row(s) affected', I got '25000 row(s) affected.'
Yup, gotta love that "oh shit" moment as you start to think about how long it'll take to undo.

Anyway I've restored from backup now, only the last 200 accounts are without their password. If your account id is greater than 7815 I'll need to reset it manually
Treefarn (6094 D)

No the bank wasn't using PHP. It was sql server. and yes, that oh shit moment sucked. do i tell someone? or just try to fix it?
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
02 Sep 08 UTC
Actually I set the accounts without reset passwords to use their e-mail address as their password (and set their e-mail addresses to be hidden). Players with reset passwords should now be able to log on using their e-mail addresses

Treefarn: At the time everyone's pass was reset, and no-one could logon. Right now I'd rather just wait it out, people can still finalize after all

Spam: Actually I took the backup 7 or so days ago, I thought I took it more recently

Maybe I don't remember well php and db interaction, but why are you always relying only on backups and don't use transactions?
If you get a "2500 rows affected" instead of 1 you just need to rollback.
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
02 Sep 08 UTC
I do manual database changes via phpMyAdmin, instead of logging in via ssh, which doesn't maintain a transaction across multiple browser requests. By the time you see how many rows are affected it has already been committed.
bc2000 (990 D)

I should have thought. You are working on a remote db on a commercial ISP server.
