just want to say
this whole senator kennedy story makes me a bit sad. just wanted to express my sympathies are with the senator. i am thankful for everything he has done and pray for the best for him.
canute (0 DX)
21 May 08 UTC
Personally i don't feel for him.
He is OLD, and we all die from something. Least he has had a good innings, and plenty more years to go... well usually anyway... with all his money he is bound to linger on for years.
I feel sorry for all the innocents in Burma(Myanmar) and China to be honest rather than some silly Politician
Kristopher (100 D)
21 May 08 UTC
Well I have enough empathy to go around. Kennedy, the earthquake victims, and many, many others deserve our sympathy. We can't possibly express it for everyone who deserves it, so there's nothing shameful about expressing it for a particular person, even if there are others who are worse off.

My thoughts go out to all those people, including the senator and his family.
CountArach (587 D)

Despite being an Australian, I do feel for his family - my heart skipped a beat when I read about it. He has done a great deal of Americans and I hope that he gets through this.
fwancophile (164 D)
21 May 08 UTC
no, i dont mean to slight the innocent victims of the recent natural disasters. i just think that it is quite sad, as i have a deep respect for senator kennedy and everything he has tirelessly advocated for. it truly is a wonderful world - and death is no doubt a part of that wonder as well.
canute (0 DX)
21 May 08 UTC
Ok.
Point taken. I should have explained a little more clearly.
I feel more sorry for all the innocent hildren and all the other victims who have had their lives and potential cut ruelly short.
Senator Kennedy has had a great and marked life, full of achievements.

What is there for me to feel bad for, when i feel sorrier for someone who has lost all chance of making a mark for themselves, or even not, if that's what they were to choose.

On a lighter note, i am sure he will be fine, and that he is under the best care that America can provide:)
Feckless Clod (777 D)

This is the Senator Ted Kennedy who drove a young woman into a pond, left her to drown, and didn't bother to call the police, right?

No sympathy.
Mary-Jo Kopechne was her name and it is her family that deserves our thoughts at this time too.
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 May 08 UTC
When I see Ted, I see John and Robert...and then I say to myself, I wish you were half the man they were. They fought and died for the American people and they made "them" tremble in their boots because of it.

Nothing against him, but compared to his brothers, Ted took the easy road.

Too bad his nephew is also dead.

While I had many differences with the Kennedys politically, I still respect their gene pool. These were successful buggers. Nobody can argue with that.
In fact, I think that it's time for a tribute game.

Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
His greatness is what got him killed, IMO.

Executive Order 11110. 'nuff said.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 May 08 UTC
that is 'nuff said'?
as if that were at all a final argument!
perhaps it is if you value property over human lives.
nevermind I'm done with this
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
yes, that was the final argument. Obviously, you do not understand the context and ramifications of this order as it relates to democracy and freedom in the USA.
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
You DO realize that the Federal Reserve is NOT Federal at all, right?
Sicarius (673 D)
22 May 08 UTC
yes I am aware.

please dont drag me into american democracy, becasue then I will be forced to tell you how undemocratic it is, and how it has stifled democracy in many other countries
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
Hey, I'm probably with you on that. :)

But that just makes JFK an even greater President. Are you aware of the implications of this order as it pertains to the elite of this country and the elite of the world?
fwancophile (164 D)
22 May 08 UTC
its a republic, not a democracy.

hey darwyn, don't be so cynical. the leadership is fractally related to all other aspects. its just that kind of geometrical relationship, you know? thats liberality - thats what it means, i mean, practically.
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
There was a coup in the US on December 23, 1913. Ignoring the unconstitutionality of the act itself, it put the power of issuing money to private bankers and severed all ties to a gold standard...making US currency dependent upon the whim of the private banking sector.

I perhaos dont know as much about it as you, but I am not completley ignorant.
I still dwell on how he greenlighted the bay of pigs invasion, and had it not been for the cuban missle crisis he planned to intervene with american soldiers.
not to mention all the assassination attempts on castro.
I'm not supporting castro, or communism, but at that point in time castro was extremley popular
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
Did you not see what the Fed did to bail out Bear-Stearns? They literally printed money out of thin air.

It's no wonder why the $ has declined.
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
I think if you research the Bay of Pigs, you will find that JFK was duped into supporting it. And I agree with you on Castro. This embargo is nothing more than corporate America punishing Cuba for not allowing them to exploit Cuban resources for their own benefit.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 May 08 UTC
I always laught when people say america spread democracy, when they have repeatedly intervened and did the opposite. fighting popular revolution in russia in the 20's, assassination of several democratically elected officials, (chile, guatamala, etc) then installing military tyrants who are favorbale to the us (angola, iran etc)
ugh!

perhaps he was.
I'm not saying he was a'bad' president.
but I think he was at best, a mediocre one.
and I dont want to get into his morals, such as his womanizing or connection with the mafia
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
And if I may submit one more point...

This fiat money system is equivalent to perpetual debt. There is absolutely NO way for the US to ever be free of debt. Because for every $1 the Fed prints, it charges the government (aka taxpayers) $1.05.

Executive Order 11110 nullifies this.

Think anyone would be a little perturbed if that order passed?
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
I agree with you totally Sicarius. one needs only examine the examples of Saddam and/or Pinochet to see this. There are numerous other examples.

But again, because JFK had the balls to defy the financial aspect of this racket is a testament to his greatness.

And that's what got him killed.
fwancophile (164 D)
22 May 08 UTC
dude - indebtedness is good for a nation. it has long been good as a nation. it ensures the financial system. i am aware of the "facts" surrounding the establishment of the fed - it is nothing like the "coup" you claim it to be. the fed is a modern financial regulator in an otherwise laissez-faire system - it was a longstanding goal dating back to hamilton to establish a system like the fed, and was practically already in place when it was formalized into law.

don't be deluded by the crazies. this system is true to its origin in integrity and true to its purpose in practice.
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
...and it's what got Robert killed...and JFK Jr.

yes, this goes deep. When you are playing with the most powerful men on earth, nothing is out of the realm of possibility. Nothing.
fwancophile (164 D)
22 May 08 UTC
the only questionable period of american history was, in fact, the roosevelt administration. given its performance during the war and the depression, you must give it credit anyway. roosevelt was the closet to a dictatory - and otherwise we have remained a largely decentralized democratic republic.
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
The Constitution states explicitly: "To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof..."

Here's a good explanation:

"The Federal Reserve Bank hires the US Treasury to print up some money. The Federal Reserve only actually pays the treasury for the cost of the printing, they do NOT pay $1 for each 1$ printed. But the Federal Reserve turns around and loans out that money (or credit line) to banks at full face value, those banks which have exhausted their deposits then loan that Federal Reserve fiat money to you, and you must repay it in the full dollar value (plus interest) in work product, even though the Federal Reserve printed that money for pennies, or created it out of thin air in a computer.

As the Federal Reserve overprints more money, the money supply inflates, and too much money starts chasing too few goods and services, which means prices go up. But contrary to the charade put on by the Federal Reserve, inflation doesn't just come and go due to some arcane sorcery. The Federal Reserve can halt inflation any time it wants to by simply shutting down those printing presses. It therefore follows that both inflation and recession are fully under the control of the Federal Reserve. This means the cycle of inflation and recession is an intentional one; a gigantic heartbeat that pumps paper certificates out to the working class, while pumping real wealth in to the owners of the banks.

So here we are with a bank that legally counterfeits the money you borrow but expects a full value (plus interest) repayment."

It is not true to its origin or purpose in practice AT ALL!

"If the American people ever allow PRIVATE banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks will deprive The People of all property until their children wake-up HOMELESS on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to The People, to whom it properly belongs". --- Thomas Jefferson

I would say under woodrow wilson, america came closer than ever to beign a police state. not to mention the level of racism that was at it's highest since before the civil war

"roosevelt was the closet to a dictator"

Agreed, fwancophile

Debt and "deficit spending" are two different things.

its scary actually. i am watching youtube speeches by roosevelt right now. frankly, i am ashamed to be an american and a democrat, watching him. he is clearly a fascist dictator. if that is what it took to take us out of the depression & win the big war in the 40s, well i guess thats what it takes. but my god, that is very scary. he is a straight up fascist.

however, wilson was more a liberal with severe antiwar policies. vast difference. you cannot compare america's federal government under wilson versus. roosevelt. the difference is the difference between a free country under stern leadership during war and a fascist country. it is night and day.
Darwyn (1601 D)
22 May 08 UTC
yes, it is scary. But not half as scary as what is going on right now. I shall stop here...if I go further, I am sure to piss off everyone.
fwancophile (164 D)
22 May 08 UTC
by the way, i know wilson was a racist, but you have to agree that america was under apartheid system at that point. the republicans had given up their reconstruction efforts at least 40 years prior. there was no civil - rights - friendly party. though in theory the republicans were - fwiw, my family is a northern republican family, which is why they do not regard themselves as racist. however the history is clearly more complex.
fwancophile (164 D)
22 May 08 UTC
nah, its okay right now. bush is on the wane and he was hardly able to do anything. liberal credit policies are actually quite good for everyone - universal credit is a socialist idea, and one of the better ones. money is only a system - no need to be the penny pinchers for humanity ;)
fwancophile (164 D)
22 May 08 UTC
actually america has never been more democratic & more enjoying of liberties than at the present. of course, and appropriately given the paradoxes of human nature, that freedom and liberality comes also at a time of great power and highly regimented institutions. i accept this as a feature of the human character - the paradox between freedom and order, that is.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 May 08 UTC
they were under apartheid because wilson imposed it!!
america reverted when he became president. he singlehandedly turned republicans from the party that freed the slaves, to the party that pushed for segregation.
I cant even scratch the surface, but wilson brought a huge resurgence of white supremacy. the KKK reached it's highest membership, blacks were pushed out of all kinds of jobs, mail carriers, movers etc. that he was just a man of his times is a myth. just like the jackie robinson myth

darwyn go ahead, whats going on now is very scary.
I just read some scary shit in the paper yesterday and I quote "you dont have to prove the underlying ,aterial is illegal. the criminal offense [as of now] is the speech that offers to sell or trade in illegal material."
not to mention the FBI's increasing practice of entaptment

also 2 words
patriot act
fwancophile (164 D)
22 May 08 UTC
look, wilson was a racist, yes. but reconstruction was dead long before. republicans had long since abandoned liberation, though they claimed the legacy. yes, shit got MORE segregated during wilson, however, that may not have been his shit - after all, it is largely a decentralized federalism. look, i am not rescuing wilson. his international relations deserves to be held high as a standard, his domestic policy was weak but included suffrage for women, and he was a racist, racist man.

guess that whole frat thing prevents me from condemning him wholesale.

look dude, the patriot act is ultimately very benign. nothing that is a right of citizenship is effected - i will guarantee you that. once you get into citizen-foreign communications? well, longstanding court doctrine already made that allowable for searches that may seem in contradiction with the bill of rights, but are ultimately not. plus, the 4th amendment has already been obliterated anyway. 4th is dead.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 May 08 UTC
wilsons forgein policy was atrocious.
he invaded:
russia
cuba
dominican republic
haiti
and mexico
some of these were horrible, toppling democratic governments for totalitarian ones
us marines killed thousands of haitians indiscriminately
he passed the espionage act and the sedition act, which were probably the most serious of all attacks on our civil liberties.
he instututed censorship. CENSORSHIP IN AMERICA!!!
he imprisoned thousands of political prisoners, most notably eugene debbs
he started the red scare
he did not support womens suffrage, and had suffragists arrested. only massive strikes and public opinion caused him, reluctantly, to grant women suffrage

I can go on

wilson is not redeemable.
he is a horrible president

Some Complicated Questions....
The original rules manual for Diplomacy, while detailed, is lacking in certain scenarios that I was wondering if any of you might be able to shed some light on.

We already know that if two countries try to enter an unoccupied space with equal force, they all bounce and the space remains empty. But here's my question: What if the space -is- already occupied, by a third nation, one who doesn't have sufficient support? Under normal circumstances, the occupying unit would be forced to retreat, but does it have to in this case, even if the two attacking opponents bounce off each other?

For example, let's say that Germany is attacking Vienna from Bohemia with support from Tyrolia. Russia is attacking Vienna from Galicia with support from Budapest. Austria has an unsupported army unit sitting in Vienna. If just one of those nations were attacking, he'd have to retreat. But can he stay there if the attackers are evenly-matched; i.e. do they "cancel each other out," or do they simply not get to take the space but still force the lone occupant to retreat?

For another question, can you support a convoy move? I.e. a unit in Sweden supports a move to Norway from London via convoy?

If somebody goes into civil disorder (and never comes back) and is required to disband a unit, how is it determined which unit is to be disbanded? Is it just random? If so, how was this handled on the actual board game? Dice? Adjudicator discretion? Etc.

Why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways?

Is it ever possible for remaining players to hit a perpetual stalemate that can only be ended either with a draw or with a stupid mistake?

That's all I can think of at the moment. Thanks!

The Welfare State
:::::::::::::'s much commented on behaviour struck me as an allegory for the Welfare State.

In php, many are trapped in a cycle of hand to mouth points dependency, secure in the knowledge that they can just wait for the next 100 points to bail them out without actually trying very hard to improve their own lot in life...

Is it time that we abolished the 100 points refresher for anyone still in a game, and all State Benefit Payments while we're at it... I fear that if we don't, these php points scroungers will never learn the value of a hard days diploming. What do others think?

CD Problem
I am sure everybody notices a lot of guys going CD few days after signing up to the site. Mostly because they are new to Diplomacy and dont really care to invest time to learn it or just dont dig the game.

I was wondering if there would be a way to limit these newbies from signing up to the game?

Just like there is a Bet Amount option. Have another option that sets the minimum number of days/months a person has to be signed up before they can join the game.

Just a thought.

italy has armies in pie & ven
orders:
pie -> tyrolia
ven -> trieste
austria has armies in tyrolia & trieste
tyrolia -> ven
trieste support tryrolia -> ven

is the result a stand off? can ven cut tyrolia's support from trieste and defend itself from tyrolia in the same turn? i'm guessing yes, because tyrolia is able to attack ven and defend against pie in the same turn, right?
