I'm pretty certain that this is meta-gaming...
While looking through the previous games of a player I found this game, http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3197.

If you look at it, all participants in the game besides the winner just happen to have only played that single game. Somehow I'm guessing that this isn't coincidence.

Social Experiment
http://diplomacytroll.smfforfree2.com/

I set up a political/general discussion forum for phpDiplomacy players. It's entirely unofficial; feel free to join. Even pitirre will be allowed to participate. It's split between moderated and unmoderated forums.

If Kestas has a problem with the board, it might just disappear without notice. Beware.

Having trouble logging off
I click on the log off button and it returns me to the same screen where I am still logged in. I don't want everyone to think I have been on here 24 hours a day recently. The problem is probably on my end, so I will just see if it goes away.

Touch Diplomacy....
.... new variant with standard rules but severe restrictions on press unless you're within "touching"distance on another nation.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
Honour rules will have to apply and would prefer players who are actually interested in lots of press (when they have the opportunity). Basic rules are as follows:

(1) everyone is allowed ONE broadcast per SEASON on global chat - with max message length of 200 words.

(2) players cannot send any private press UNLESS they have units in adjacent provinces to that country and can continue to exchange press for as long as they remain within "touching" distance.
- adjacent is defined as having the ability to move to that country e.g. English Channel <-> Brest; Munich <-> Tyrolia
- armies in coastal regions may NOT communicate with fleets at Sea; but the fleet at sea can communicate with the army on the coast
- similarly a fleet in a coastal region cannot send press to a bordering but inland army; but the inland army could send press to the coastal fleet.
- north coast/south coast rules also apply: so Moscow army would only be considered adjacent to a St Pete's fleet on the south coast NOT north coast

(3) if two countries 'bounce' on a territory this will also be considered 'touching' and private press will be allowed between those nations until the start of the next season

(4) Anyone breaking these rules will not be allowed to move for one turn and you are encouraged to inform on anyone breaking these rules. Broadcasting on global regarding someone breaking the rules does not use up your 'one broadcast' per season.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))

Let me know who is interested and any potential changes/clarifications to the rules.
dangermouse (5551 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
That would mean, for instance that England cannot talk to anyone in Spring 1901 and Austria can only talk to Italy?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
From my understanding they are both in bouncing distance over the channel?
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
Initally yes (which is why i think the bounce rule is necessary). So part of the game will involve manouvering into positions to make contact with people and maintaining it for as long as possible. Also lots of room for passing on press from one country to another that aren't in contact (and to potentially corrupt the message). I think it might give the central powers are slight advantage versus standard play.... at least in the very beginning.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
you can only make contact if you both actually bounce. (Diplomatic pouches can be exchanged as the armies meet and retreat).
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
I got the concept from here btw - which inlcudes interesting discussion on how the first couple of attempts at this game evolved via snail mail:

This is very interesting...a few thoughts on this...
* It wasn't said, but I figure it's the case: a fleet in a coastal province could press to a fleet in a neighboring waterway, yes?
* I would think the coastal rule would be like so: an army can correspond with a fleet in a bi-coastal province regardless of coasts, however a fleet in a waterway adjacent to a bi-coastal province can only correspond with an army in said province or a fleet on the adjacent coast.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
correct to all.
flashman (2274 D(G))
15 Apr 08 UTC
A very interesting concept...

I am up for it. Perhaps the most unusual version so far...

Can you pass a message through one player to another if they form a chain? That would be especially interesting with fleets.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
- armies in coastal regions may NOT communicate with fleets at Sea; but the fleet at sea can communicate with the army on the coast
- similarly a fleet in a coastal region cannot send press to a bordering but inland army; but the inland army could send press to the coastal fleet.
------------------------
So the other player cannot respond? Surely you can respond if they speak to you. ie: if the fleet comes over to the army on land then they can speak, but it is the fleets choice at the start
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
the other player CANNOT respond in the example above, even if he receives a message. So one way conversation with no means of affirmation is definitely possible.

Flashman - you can pass a message in a chain but if you are in that chain you have full discretion to pass on the message as is, ignore it and not pass it on, change the message or plain make a message up. Can all get very devious and confusing!!

I'm interested, but I'm not sure if I can remember to follow the rules. I'll probably end up in trouble most of the match.
thewonderllama (100 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
maybe for the first couple of rounds we can post in global chat who can talk to who?
ednos (529 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
Even posting the rules once as the first global chat would be sufficient for me, as I'll always be able to read it. I check all the chat logs before I consider making moves or talking.

Interesting - my first WTA. I've been meaning to play one of these for a while, but have rather caught the variant bug, bit like wonderllama. All these twists and turns!

I particularly like the 'snitch' rule, but what penalties if someone fails to inform?
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
16 Apr 08 UTC
As with all variants we will have to abide by the honour system - anyone outed for not sticking to the rules must hold all units for one turn. Anyone not sticking to the system will be named and shamed on the forum - and will hopefully be blacklisted from future variants.

I doubt it will come to that though. And people will be allowed to use global chat to clarify who they can speak to if they are unsure.

The rule is 200 words max for the seasonal Global message...

I would like this to be strictly enforced. It would be amusing to force someone to sit out a round because they exceeded the word limit...
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
16 Apr 08 UTC
Also note the rule is only ONE global message per turn too. (only exclusions to this are clarifications on who you can communicate with and informing on someone breaking the rules)

Bug? I lost a whole army!!!
Hi,

I would like to ask if losing an army suddenly in one turn is a known bug. I'm Italy in the game "just a game 5" and my newly built army in Rome suddenly disappeared... Can anyone help?

Game: Final Witness-Low Bet
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3313

This is a draw request on behalf of Germany, Russia, Turkey, and myself(as Austria). France Britain and Italy are controlled by a metagamer. For one, the accounts controlling France and Britain only play in games together, and form strong alliances, and never stab eachother. This in itself is not proof! However, on two separate occasions, those two players were caught with loggin times within ten minutes. What's more is that the metagamer created a new account to take over for Italy, who was in civil disorder! The last time I checked this new profile, It was in two games; the one I am talking about, and a game which was yet to start, and also included the accounts controlling France and Britain in the first game. If it can be proven that these players are metagamers, the rest of the players would like a draw between the remaining players, and if possible, the eliminated player, who controls Germany.

Double BUG
Dear Kestas, there have been two consecutive bugs in my games:

1) in " hidden team variant", I put in an order for MAO to Brest, but it moved me to North Africa.

2) In "the fall of Gondolin", I attempted to convoy an army from Ankara to Rumania- there was no resistance or anything, but the arrows on the screen show me moving to sevastopol and then bouncing with an imaginary unit.

I would appreciate it greatly if you could look into this. Thanks Kestas.

responding to my anti-USA goverment views.
I dont have anything agaisnt the US citizens but i sure have a problem with thier goverment. Not only of their illegal interventions in another countries which has ended in millions of lifes wasted ... but im from Puerto Rico and from more 100 years the US goverment has kept us in a colonial status and if that is not enough the US goverment has killed, experimented, persecution, abuse and torture many of puerto ricans in the island... sometimes for political reasons and sometimes because they just can.

I think many US citizens SHOULD participate more and be more educated on how their goverment behave... because if you dont care how irresponsible they act on your country that is your problem BUT the reality is that your goverment loves to intervene in other countries affairs, many dies and many times is for the most selfish reasons... and then you have the face to question why many countries on the world dislike your goverment and why bad things happen to you from time to time.
be more responsible because sadly the world suffers from your lack of political interest.

Is it for real? Is it a catastrophe? Or is it just another standard periodic warming of the Earth as happens every few hundred thousand years?

Can we do anything about it? Is there any point? Are all our individual efforts just tokenism? Is there really any prospect of the whole world (including China, India, Brazil) reducing emissions by the levels required to make a difference?
