I'm pretty certain that this is meta-gaming...
While looking through the previous games of a player I found this game, http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3197.

If you look at it, all participants in the game besides the winner just happen to have only played that single game. Somehow I'm guessing that this isn't coincidence.

Social Experiment
http://diplomacytroll.smfforfree2.com/

I set up a political/general discussion forum for phpDiplomacy players. It's entirely unofficial; feel free to join. Even pitirre will be allowed to participate. It's split between moderated and unmoderated forums.

If Kestas has a problem with the board, it might just disappear without notice. Beware.

Having trouble logging off
I click on the log off button and it returns me to the same screen where I am still logged in. I don't want everyone to think I have been on here 24 hours a day recently. The problem is probably on my end, so I will just see if it goes away.

Forum Rules
what do people think about these ideas for the forum.
ednos (529 D(S))
14 Apr 08 UTC
I think that's a great idea.
sean (3490 D(B))
14 Apr 08 UTC
1. limited space for first post (ie like this one above) so forum topics stick around longer and first posts don't take up too much room and annoy people who might be prone to getting annoyed.
2.a guide to the forum at the top on the forum page, something short and concise like "please be civil"
3. this was discussed by figlesquigde if i remember rightly - clear names about what the post is about. i guess this difficulty with this is with new people and time that people would forget to do it. a drop down menu might solve this but i guess that may have to wait for a future version of the forum(which isn't that important i feel compared to getting the game 100% perfect-golly its nearly there anyway isn't it?)

does anybody else have some ideas about the forum?
ednos (529 D(S))
14 Apr 08 UTC
Well, a better solution to the third one in the long run would be having different forums and moderating threads off topic to that particular forum.
Brutorix (100 D)

4. No swearing - I believe Kestas deletes post with a lot of crude language as well.

No, the forum is more than just a valuable asset to the site. If you can't handle it, just ignore it.

Rule No. 1: No off-topic posts.

Current forum is virtually useless with all those off-topics. Please avoid them or move them to a separate category.
sean (3490 D(B))
14 Apr 08 UTC
marekP, do you mean within a certain thread don't post offtopic (of that thread) replies? - everyone can agree to that im sure (but can they keep to it?)
OR do you mean no non diplomacy "off" topic posts? i dont think that would be good idea
MarekP (12864 D)
14 Apr 08 UTC
I mean no non diplomacy off-topics. If the forum has more distinct sections, then those non diplomacy topics may be posted to a separate section.
sean (3490 D(B))
14 Apr 08 UTC
i don't agree with that. if you don't want to read non diplomacy posts then don't read them. thats why i think the first post should be just one sentence/very very short , so that the forum wont get cluttered up and people who don't like to chat about stuff while waiting for messages don't need to see stuff they don't want to.

Sean, on some net forums they have a 'sticky' that keeps the thread at the top of the list. If you could do that, you could have a help section which we can edit as and when people need help.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
14 Apr 08 UTC
I have always been in support of leaving things as free as possible, but I am getting worried about the number of Anti-US posts. I'm not from the US, and some of the points are interesting, but you don't all need to make your own threads to make the point.
CG-There is a help section, but if more material is needed then maybe we can run a thread to sort out what should be added, then write it so all Kestas has to do is add it in.
Yes I agree with the views given so far (and yes, it was me who said that before Sean). I'm a little reluctant that we should try and shut down all non-diplomacy threads, as I think they do help build the community. However, there are currently too many on the same subject.
I'd like to be able to edit my posts, sometimes there are spelling/grammar errors that I only catch afterwards
CountArach (587 D)

I said it in another thread, but I'll repeat it here - why not just have 1 mega political thread? You can start a new one every few hundred posts or so.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
14 Apr 08 UTC
Thats not a bad idea. Having said that, one would be very 'messy' to read with the number of conversations there are. Maybe taking the idea one step further we could start 3 sanctioned off-topic threads. That would give enough space for conversations to make at least a little sense, whilst keeping the forum clean?
thewonderllama (100 D)

The forum here is a big part of the vibrant phpDip community, both Diplomacy and not as Diplomacy related threads...and until recently, it seemed fairly well balanced in that regard. Politics is one of those things that really gets people riled up, unfortunately. And frankly, anything that gets people too riled up shouldn't be in the forum, imho. That is until the day that there are multiple forums and moderators here, but that's still a bit off.
We could have someone make an external forum, to keep topics separated. Its free and generally simple, and of course you'd have to register with your user name here. Of course these forums would still be used to diplomacy related topics.

i agree with wonder, i like that the forum is kinda bringing us closer together as a community. sure we have a few disagreements. maybe we all just need to be a bit more DILOMATIC in the forums.

I agree with the rules posted by Sean, but why not divide the forum? Say, a general one and a rant/discusion room designed for heavy stuff?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
I think 4 sections would be nice:
Staff
Comments (complaints/features/possible bugs)
Games (Meeting point etc)
Social (Everything else
---
Although it wouldn't be hard to implement this, it would require rewriting the forum, which would take time.
MarekP (12864 D)

What do you think about discussing unfinished games in the forum? It's pretty common here, but I believe it's against rules of most mind sports (chess, go etc.).
figlesquidge (2131 D)
16 Apr 08 UTC
I really don't mind, especially as I would much rather foul play was brought up when the game is finished rather then whilst it is in progress, as accusations are often thrown around before it is fair to do so. Also, Chess is spoken about - you can read reports on the games in newpapers etc. Whether an individual talks is their own choice.

Game: Final Witness-Low Bet
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3313

This is a draw request on behalf of Germany, Russia, Turkey, and myself(as Austria). France Britain and Italy are controlled by a metagamer. For one, the accounts controlling France and Britain only play in games together, and form strong alliances, and never stab eachother. This in itself is not proof! However, on two separate occasions, those two players were caught with loggin times within ten minutes. What's more is that the metagamer created a new account to take over for Italy, who was in civil disorder! The last time I checked this new profile, It was in two games; the one I am talking about, and a game which was yet to start, and also included the accounts controlling France and Britain in the first game. If it can be proven that these players are metagamers, the rest of the players would like a draw between the remaining players, and if possible, the eliminated player, who controls Germany.

Double BUG
Dear Kestas, there have been two consecutive bugs in my games:

1) in " hidden team variant", I put in an order for MAO to Brest, but it moved me to North Africa.

2) In "the fall of Gondolin", I attempted to convoy an army from Ankara to Rumania- there was no resistance or anything, but the arrows on the screen show me moving to sevastopol and then bouncing with an imaginary unit.

I would appreciate it greatly if you could look into this. Thanks Kestas.

i heard that pitirre got banned because CIA asked kestas to do so. apparently he brought to the public some evidence about US experimenting on puerto rico citizens, and CIA was not pleased

responding to my anti-USA goverment views.
I dont have anything agaisnt the US citizens but i sure have a problem with thier goverment. Not only of their illegal interventions in another countries which has ended in millions of lifes wasted ... but im from Puerto Rico and from more 100 years the US goverment has kept us in a colonial status and if that is not enough the US goverment has killed, experimented, persecution, abuse and torture many of puerto ricans in the island... sometimes for political reasons and sometimes because they just can.

I think many US citizens SHOULD participate more and be more educated on how their goverment behave... because if you dont care how irresponsible they act on your country that is your problem BUT the reality is that your goverment loves to intervene in other countries affairs, many dies and many times is for the most selfish reasons... and then you have the face to question why many countries on the world dislike your goverment and why bad things happen to you from time to time.
be more responsible because sadly the world suffers from your lack of political interest.

Seriously guys, what is going on? I feel like this forum has devolved into an orgy of anti-Americanism. Criticize my country all you want, I'm not going to argue with your right to, but this has become ridiculous.

I feel like I'm being belittled for defending my country. It's sad really.

Global Warming
Is it for real? Is it a catastrophe? Or is it just another standard periodic warming of the Earth as happens every few hundred thousand years?

Can we do anything about it? Is there any point? Are all our individual efforts just tokenism? Is there really any prospect of the whole world (including China, India, Brazil) reducing emissions by the levels required to make a difference?
