Radicals vs ?
A recent conversation made me look once more at what i think of politics...

Also i have a clear idea in my head if what a radical is, but what is their opposite? A non-radical? A (small c) conservative? A compromiser?

Site Issue
Hey everyone - our DNS host has gone offline, which means that some users won't be able to get to the site (depending on whether or not their local DNS server has cached webdip's address).

I'm not sure how long this will go on for, but I've paused adjudication until it is fixed.

Password protected games
So passwords should make sure only invited players join a game ... but sometimes the gametitle gives a very strong hint towards what the password might be... anyone else sometimes tempted to test if a hunch is right? And I wonder about how the mods would react to someone sneaking into a private game by guessing the password ...

Average fleets to solo?
I'm thinking of pulling some stats on the number of fleets that each country usually has in a solo (I think Tru did something similar a while back, but we've had a lot more games finished since then). But, before I do that, let's argue about it on the forum!

Who wants to guess at the average number of fleets each country has in a WTA solo?

So, for my part, all I wanted to do was sealion. Germany was wishy-washy and Russia said he was opening South. So, I made conservative moves in the hopes I could move against England the next year. Italy (at Austria's insistence, no doubt) moved against me, essentially locking me in that dreaded Franco-Italian stalemate the rest of the game. Germany did try to stab me, but only after he had brought down the ire of Austria, so I was able get him back on my side. Thankfully, both England and Germany were afraid enough of Austrian's solo not to eliminate me. Would have liked to see Russia go, but it worked out as well as it could have for me, all things considered.

Because it forced the WT. If Austria hadn't attacked MUN, he wouldn't have been such a solo threat and Germany would have had no motivation to stop attacking me.

He had one centre over the line in 1902... I'm not sure that's a solo threat.

It's rare that the south keeps Munich if it's taken early - I see an early grab of Munich more as a way to get the board to open up, not to close it down. It repressurises the board in a totally different way (and is often great for Germany).

He even sent his 2nd fleet East - that's not the behaviour of a rapidly soloing Austria. Or at least, I don't think it is.

Italy did not have the wherewithal to hold off Austria. Austria could have taken the East and then gobbled up Italy whenever he felt like it.

Why was this game drawn? Russia, Italy and France could all have potentially been eliminated.

I haven't looked at the game that closely, but it looks like Austria's stab in 1905 was a good attempt to change the dynamic of the game. He potentially got England on his side and completely routed Russia. And at 10 centers, there was still quite a lot of play before the board completely locked into a stalemate.

Austria's opening should be seen as bad even from the standpoint of non-competitive play. That he was able to outlive Turkey should be seen not as evidence of userID=23172 's ingenuity so much as a lack of willpower on the part of any of his neighbors to eliminate a power who was never a strategic threat.

When he attacked Germany only two seasons later, one has to understand that it more or less confirmed for the other four players that this was going to be one of those games. That's when the rest of them realized that the 1907 sexpartite match nul was a fait accompli. Five long years of gridlock with Turkey the sole casualty of the match after opening west and then abandoning the Black Sea in 1902.

Re: Basvan

It was drawn mostly out of frustration. Austria refused to back off the stalemate line so that England and I could comfortably eliminate France. And he refused to eliminate Russia *unless* we eliminated France.
I see. So you were pinned down by all of Austria's armies, StackelbergFollower wanted to move on France but couldn't do it on his own, and Hellenic Riot refused to release the pressure until you two attacked France.

This game had the biggest bunch of cowards I've seen in a long time.

So: Spring 1901 - Germany arranges a CPA with me and Italy - great! As a result, I plan to destroy Turkey as quickly as possible, and Germany persuades Italy to open West (Not me, France!). England tells me France has been arranging a WT - truthfully or not - and that instantly irritates me that one of those is on the table, as they're such game ruining alliances.

So, Autumn comes, I put into place the plan with Russia to destroy Turkey ASAP and it all goes great. Italy calls Abge's bluff on Marseilles at my encouragement. Two of the CPA players have thus done their jobs. Sadly, the third one does not. Germany lets France take Belgium, and a WT appears. It took Germany 2 years to explain why he did this, when he said he "didn't want Italy growing too quickly". Which is my problem with Germany - utterly self-centred. He gets Italy to move west, then fucks Italy over because Italy might grow a little faster than he was, and wonders why I think he's a shit ally. There's now a WT on the board, so am I going to attack Russia in 1902 as previously planned? No bloody way. I attack Germany, who finally stabs France, too little too late. By screwing Italy in 1901 he screwed Italy's entire game and created that stalemate. France should have died as quickly as Turkey did.

I made the correct response to an apparent WT in 1902, and Germany deserved all he got. But anyway; once the stalemate came into play, I began negotiations with England. We spent two phases planning an agreement where he would stab Germany whilst I stabbed Italy, then with 2 hours til the end of the phase, he backed out because Russia wouldn't talk to him. Irritating, but fine, it's a valid reason.

So I spend another 2 turns discussing a plan where I stab Russia in return for his stab on Germany. This time, he pussies out without even telling me, so I make Russia the offer to prop him up in revenge. Russia fights me, however, so despite my anger, I negotiate with England and Germany for them to stab France by me pulling away. Having given Berlin up, I attempt to withdraw further. Instead, E&G decide to pump as many armies as possible into Russia, at which point I tell them to suck my dick, keep Russia alive in Ankara, and force the draw because I was fed up with playing such cowards.

When Italy & Russia alive - I was not a solo threat. They were correct in their surmise that I could have stabbed one of them at any point, as I proved when I stabbed Russia. However, I could never stab BOTH of them simultaneously. The only reason I even had a fleet in the West was to try and help Italy break out - created by ENGLAND propping up France. The only reason I was attacking Russia was at ENGLAND's request. The only player who was across the stalemate line was ENGLAND at Moscow.

Germany's self-centredness w/r/t to a CPA he never once was willing to sacrifice himself in order to furthen, and England's utter inability to think outside the box or take any risk whatsoever ruined this game, and I won't be playing another game with either pussy for a very long time. I don't blame France because he was a corpse after 1901 and whilst he made me the very tempting offer to pull Italy away from him so he could stab Germany (when the only other direction Italy could go in was mine - great offer!), he was never very relevant. He was always a dead man walking. England had many many opportunities to break open the West and refused to do it because he is a huge coward.

I did everything I reasonably could to try and open the game up, but England and Germany refused to think outside the box at all, and as a result, they got the 6WD they deserved. I was voting Cancel with Russia by the end of that shite.

Italy and Russia, and even Turkey, were enjoyable to play with. The West was pathetic. And this is the polite EoG I wrote.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
20 Jun 15 UTC
Oh, and every one of England's plans to attack France involved Italy not taking the MAO - he was also not willing to make any risks himself. He wanted us to leave the MAO alone whilst he gobbled all of France up. Now, that's reasonable if Italy was a solo threat - but hang on - I was the solo threat? They complained Italy was too weak to resist me, and then refused to let Italy get any stronger at all. Idiocy, pure idiocy.

Let's hold on here a minute.

Sure, I was playing both sides (the CPA and the WT). Until I made my intentions abundantly clear in S02 when I stabbed France. At which point you *still* decided to take Munich, forcing me into the WT. How exactly does that make me a coward?
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
21 Jun 15 UTC
Nah, fuck that.

If you wanted to play both sides, don't make Italy open west. Your word was worthless and you were as appealing to work with as dry rot after you pulled that shit. I don't regret attacking you. Either have some balls and pick a side in the first year, or don't make your allies do things and then fuck them over. You deserved all you got.
Diplomacy would be a pretty boring game if everyone picked a side in the first year and stuck with it...
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
21 Jun 15 UTC
Sure. As I said though - if he didn't want to pick, he shouldn't have got Italy to go West. I had zero faith that he remotely cared about a CPA after that.
☺ (1304 D)
21 Jun 15 UTC
When I stab the WT, that means I have "balls" and am "courageous".

When I stab Italy, I'm "worthless" and "dry rot".

Seem like a double standard?
I don't have much to add to this. My short EOG is that I never wanted a WT, and in S01 I was pretty much 50-50 on whether or not I'd just go gung ho against France even without Germany. Sort of wish I had, it would have been a more interesting game.

Anyway, in terms of breaking the WT, I had made it clear to Austria that I would attack France, not Germany, after a long series of negotiations made it clear that what he really wanted was for me to let Russia and France grow while I attacked Germany. Not a great outcome. That was what went behind Austria's moves against Russia, and why he was (and I imagine still is) so angry at me.

About a year later, I went to Italy and proposed I would stab France in a fall phase, taking Brest, and that it could probably be negotiated that Paris or Marseilles would fall at the same time. My only condition was that Italy wait until the following turn (when France would have been down to 3 units, i.e. after builds) to take MAO, since I was going to lose Sev and wouldn't have had a build to cover everything from MAO's retreat.

Apparently this was unacceptable to Austria, who said that if I stabbed France, he would just stab Italy, prop up Italy and France, and force me to take the 6-way draw. I don't know what on earth he expected me to do after this; I made it clear that stabbing Germany required a certain lunacy I didn't possess, so I voted draw and the game ended.

The game is over, SF. I'm not angry at you. I put you on mute during the game when I became uninterested in anything you had to say. You're not on mute now. For what it's worth, I found the game extremely odd, though I can't complain at the outcome.

Gun Boat for Beginners
Just wondering if there are ways to cooperate without talking? Does anyone ever throw support by guessing and then establish alliances without talking? I am in a game where I have not attacked one front, and they have not attacked me, but no one expects help so there is no planning. Just wondering if there are some patterns or codes people use... or does that defeat the point of playing gunboat?
