Radicals vs ?
A recent conversation made me look once more at what i think of politics...

Also i have a clear idea in my head if what a radical is, but what is their opposite? A non-radical? A (small c) conservative? A compromiser?

Site Issue
Hey everyone - our DNS host has gone offline, which means that some users won't be able to get to the site (depending on whether or not their local DNS server has cached webdip's address).

I'm not sure how long this will go on for, but I've paused adjudication until it is fixed.

Geomagnetic Storm
If you are anywhere in the northern third of the United States or Canada, the aurora should be very visible tonight with clear (and dark, outside of cities) skies due to an ongoing geomagnetic storm. Check it out if you can.

Password protected games
So passwords should make sure only invited players join a game ... but sometimes the gametitle gives a very strong hint towards what the password might be... anyone else sometimes tempted to test if a hunch is right? And I wonder about how the mods would react to someone sneaking into a private game by guessing the password ...

Average fleets to solo?
I'm thinking of pulling some stats on the number of fleets that each country usually has in a solo (I think Tru did something similar a while back, but we've had a lot more games finished since then). But, before I do that, let's argue about it on the forum!

Who wants to guess at the average number of fleets each country has in a WTA solo?

Gun Boat for Beginners
Just wondering if there are ways to cooperate without talking? Does anyone ever throw support by guessing and then establish alliances without talking? I am in a game where I have not attacked one front, and they have not attacked me, but no one expects help so there is no planning. Just wondering if there are some patterns or codes people use... or does that defeat the point of playing gunboat?

A GAME Site..,so I am told...
So I have had a few run-ins with the mods. Fair enough...I deservewhat they give me. But I am told that this is PRIMARILY A GAMING SITE, and that my negative forum behavior negatively impacts the GAME SITE. SO......I have noticed that there are a few forum *INSTIGATORS* - FREQUENT FORUM POSTERS who DO NOT PLAY GAMES. Who is with me that the privilege of using the FORUMS should be tied to PLAYING GAMES ON THIS GAME SITE???

it seems to me, that all too often, England is a nation to suffer. I know people have won as England, but early attacks are very common and you rarely see the Pink and Blue in alliance anymore,Why?

Bushcraft Knife Safety
Does anyone know anything about teaching knife safety? I am looking for material to fill about 40 minutes but I have never taken a knife safety class myself (WFA/R don't count).

I have a lot of experience with knives, and I very rarely cut myself. Hit me up and I'll give you some great tips on how to safely fillet a fish, peel a squash, and slice a baguette.

Why have you been given the task of teaching people about knife safety if you don't know anything about knife safety? Shouldn't they find a teacher who knows about the subject instead?

Knife safety begins with smart knife control laws. With wise regulation, drive by stabbings would be a thing of the past.

I'm not sure you're on the right website for knife safety anyway. Most of us are stabbing each other all the time.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
21 Jun 15 UTC
@Jamiet ... I know plenty about knife safety, I have simply never taken a class. I know the material I am asked to teach, I just don't know how to teach it. I can list a hundred things to do and not to do, but to put them into a coherent exercise or lesson is a different story.

@HR ... I'm specifically looking for tips on teaching it, not simply knife safety itself.

(Though, to your point, it is a fair bit ironic that I will be teaching knife safety with a moderately healed substantial gash in my finger from a knife.)

Well you can always stab yourself with your knife in a non lethal spot. The paramedics carting you out should leave the kids with a healthy respect for knives.

In all seriousness, I just googled "Teaching knife safety to kids" and got a ton of seemingly helpful results.

Bo, I have taught knife safety several times to 11-13 year olds. Stuff I would hit:

Basic safety and etiquette, ie, blood circles, cutting away, sheathing/closing, proper hand off
Sharpening. Whet stones, dry stones, files, etc.
Storage: dry, out of reach
Different types of knives for different purposes
Different things cut and techniques (wood different than vegetables different than flesh)

More complicated stuff you could get into could be skinning, fileting, carving, etc. The most important thing the kids can take away is that a knife is a tool that can hurt you and possibly kill you. Probably one of the best lessons a young kid can learn from knives is seeing what they can do. I have seen people cut by knives many times (no, not after my teaching them safety), and nothing will instill safety better than watching blood pour down your buddy's hand after making mince of his finger. But try to avoid that teaching strategy.

Also, I would not teach anyone to use a knife unless they had some first aid training, so might want to check on that. And have plenty of band aids ready :)
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Sharpening is huge. A dull knife is deadly. A sharp knife is simply sharp. That's a great point to add.

I was thinking about doing the blood circle - is that something people normally teach?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Yeah, their chaperones are all WFRs and I am gonna teach some general wound cleaning for good measure.
KingCyrus (511 D)

Bo, ABSOLUTELY teach blood circles. Anyone using a knife under basically any circumstances should at least be aware of their blood circle.

Someone told me to stop running with the knife blade pointing out. I said that I put it away from me so that I don't stab myself. Who's right?

Just don't run period with an unsheathed knife.

Don't even walk, just sheath it.
thorfi (1023 D)

KC and Bo are right, unless you're in a knife fight. In which case, pointy end towards the enemy, go.
thorfi (1023 D)
22 Jun 15 UTC
That said, if I actually need to move whilst holding an unsheathed knife (whilst not in a knife fight), I'll flip it around so that the handle is towards my thumb and the point is away. If it's got a blunt side, then I put the blunt side towards me, provided I can do that whilst maintaining a grip that isn't slack (and yes, "isn't slack" rather than "tight").

Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

If you're holding a knife, you hold it downwards slack at your side and the blade aimed backwards whilst you walk. As a result, I am yet to stab someone at work.

Burn someone on the other hand... ah, fun times.

Linguistic Harbingers of Betrayal
So I just saw this interesting paper analyzing 249 online diplomacy games, with around 145,000 messages. They're studying which linguistic cues (number of messages, sentiment, politeness, etc) predict upcoming betrayal. Best part: they're going to make all the data available online! http://vene.ro/betrayal/ and http://vene.ro/betrayal/niculae15betrayal.pdf
