Since I have been an adult, I have had four pets.
Jasmine (My cat, her decision). Literally, I went into a friend's pet store and looked into a frolicking mass of kittens playing in a cage. I said, "Okay, who wants to come home with me?" She immediately stopped playing an sat up looking at me. I was not a cat person & she was a challenging pet, but also an exceptionally loving one. I would come in after a day at work and lay down on the couch & hear her trill of a meow from another room as she ran to jump on my chest as a welcome.
Sebastian was too smart for his own good, but a portly gentleman of a cat. He took it upon himself to greet everyone as they entered the house (family, friend, stranger) they all received his welcome at the door. He was an absolutely pampered cat. He belonged to my wife before I met her. She would leave the faucet running in the bathroom sink all day so that he could have fresh running water to drink out of the tap whenever he wanted.
Coda, is the kindest and gentlest dog (although quite mistrustful of strangers). His bark is totally worse than his non-existent bite. He is laying on the floor beside my chair right now, and I confess to being a little unsettled at the thought, once again, that he is becoming very old (13 years old). He was, once again, one of my spur-of-the-moment acquisitions.
I was looking at pure-bread dogs and went to the vet to talk about the price for the first year shots, surgeries, etc. The vet said "We've got a pup in the back who got hit by a car. We patched his leg up and you can have him if you want. Already has all his shots." I walked back and saw the black lab mix puppy and that was it.
A distinct yin to Coda's yang, Bishop is a Jack Russell terrier. I said earlier that I am a dog person. Let me amend that by saying I am a big dog person. I fear that I traumatized this little guy for the first year, but we have finally gotten a good working relationship & he will sit in my lap every time he gets the chance. We have both been actively reinforcing a bond in this way. He sits. I scratch. He licks. It is T.V. time.
Good pets all in their own way. I have been fortunate. I hope that I have been good enough to them.
Sorry for your loss ERAUfan, They always stay with you.
