So I'm gonna be writing a series of articles on Diplomacy strategy by country.
Chime in with suggestions for what you'd like to see covered in this series, what you think doesn't receive enough face time in other articles, what receives too much, etc. There's going to be a general article as well so if you've got more general material you want to see, throw it up here too.

IDEA: Enclaves & Exclaves
I've get a hard-on from keeping non-SC territories neutral or the color of an eliminated player; maybe it's the Yankee in me, but I hate seeing the entire board a single color -- it just seems so totalitarian.... So, here's an idea: what if you got an extra SC worth of "supply" for surrounding such "unowned" territories?

Reading on Dip Strategy
I'm playing a game with a few friends who have played Dip but may be a bit rusty. I'd love to share some links to some links to good articles to read on their respective countries. I used to read a lot on diplomacy-archive, but it seems to be incomplete in describing different openings etc. What do you guys consider to be the definitive guide of all things Diplomacy?

Sharp's The Game of Diplomacy. Sort of above the webdip level, though.

The diplomacy pouch has an interactive openings library: www.diplom.org/Online/Openings/interactive.html

It links to articles about most of the main options...
Thanks for those! Both I knew once but were lost in time to me. I wish there was just one ONE diplomacy repository somewhere collecting all this stuff. Any more tips are more than welcome.
not to shit on Sharp, but his advice kinda sucks imo

Magic Eight-Ball is the definitive resource. Should I stab France? Without a doubt. Will Russia leave me alone? You may rely upon it. Can I get a build next turn? Outlook good.

Study Mad Marx's games. They are the definitive guide.
On Sharp, it seems to be a hit and miss really. I loved his Russia stuff, but the Italy chapter seemed way off the mark to me. Any other resources we know of? Surely there must be something post-1980, after the era of British and US postal games?

I've tried making a site of Links to online resources (and strategy articles from the webdip forums, few and far between though they may be) but it's not great: https://sites.google.com/site/webdiplomacylinks/

Lewis Pulsipher's three-part series on the three elements of the game -- negotiations, strategy and tactics -- is excellent. It was originally published in the old General magazine. I've recommended the series to a number of new players. You can find links to three articles at our ftf club's website, http://windycityweasels.org/other-links.

You guys are looking for the Diplomacy Archive, a great site with strategy guides and much more: www.diplomacy-archive.com

You've already mentioned a similar site, The Diplomatic Pouch, though most of its content is accessible from the Diplomacy Achive: http://devel.diplom.org (check out The Library of Diplomacy Openings, devel.diplom.org/DipPouch/Online/Openings, and the Visual Index to Stalemate Positions, devel.diplom.org/Online/StalematesAtoY/visual.htm)

For articles about variants to the game, see: http://www.variantbank.org/articles.htm

You're all welcome.
Honestly, all these resources are good to get the basics, however, they are all outdated. These were all written when games were played FtF or by mail, there was a far smaller database of games and experiences to draw upon. Considering the amount of games here and other websites, lots has changed.

Some are ofcourse outdated but many still work, major things is that even if its the same game, f2f and onlinedip is à huge difference, not so much tactics and strategy but rather diplomatic and phsychological.
F2f is also way more intense often à fixed endyear and limited playtime (france 1907, 4 h, no draws and à highly competetiv tournament scoring system, other end is drawsystems with no fixed endyear). So most of the time your aim is to have most sc 190x not 18 as à primatet goal. Many articles are written with that in mind.

I agree that the diplomatic pouch is a great place for beginner tips, openings, and advanced strategies.

Lando is on the money. Pretty much any strategy article not written in this millennium (e.g. Sharp's book) is wildly outdated. The game has evolved since then. I would say that a good a resource as any is the SoW threads, especially some of the opening comments that talk about game philosophy.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

The Lewis Pulsipher series is where I get most of my high-level dip philosophy from. If you read my one lesson in the SoW game this summer before it ended, it was pretty much my take on his philosophy condensed into one bite-sized chunk. I'd long since lost the link to those articles though.
So do we know of any valid 21st century resources? They must be out there surely.
And, related, is there some sort of World Diplomacy Federation?
JECE (1248 D)

I should have given a more direct URL. This is where to look for articles relevant:
http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy.htm
Granted, I haven't taken a look at these much in the last couple years, nor have I explored every section, but I got a lot out of everything I looked at.

I havent played f2f in à while but back then there was à "federation" connected to wdc (world diplomacy convention), you where part of it if you attended à wdc and they decided where next was to be held and so on. Many of the early emaildippers was part of f2f scene to (manus hand (dip pouch) edi birsan (way back....postal 60s, inventer of the lepanto opening) and many more.
Im not sure if its current state but wdc (and edc european....) is still going strong.
k, tnx all. I'd hoped for some good analytical stuff based on modern trends and 21st century stats, but I guess it simply doesnt exist.

You are 13 years into the 21st century. Geez.
If anyone cares I'll write some articles about individual countries' opening strategy.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
13 Sep 13 UTC
@PE, if you do i'll be happy to republish them in my collection of articles i've found on the webdip forums!
@PE: I certainly would love that. But in particular, I think there is quite some demand to see analysis backed by the plethora of data available of modern play. I'm not usre whether that's available somewhere, but if it is, I'm sure you'll find any articles to be read vigurously. The fact that Sharp is still an important source says something about the lack of up-to-date resources.

Have you tried YouTube? I found the "HistoryGamerDotCom" channel and he does a Diplomacy Strategy serries for the clasic game. It is still based on the F2F game but goes through your starting move options with each country. I found it a good reffresher when I started up here.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I think Sharp is an interesting point of view, like Chess the actual 'good' play depends on the community, popular openings maybe come and go as 'good' defence become popular...

What makes sense to do online in a group of veterans is different from what to do with your 6 best mates who only ever play each other. (and how easy it is to convince someone to make 'good' moves depends on what they think or have seen/read) that is all part of the meta-game. But Sharp, while good background reading, is not a source i would recommend for the meta-game - the webdip meta-game is probably worth it's own case study. (kestas may making a stripped db of moves and game results available to study - though being able to filter based on average GR of the game would be awesome, taking say the top 20% of games by GR)

It sounds like people don't know. Somebody was maintaining a huge database of webDiplomacy games and analyzing them. I can't remember who.

who would you like to meet on webdip if you wete visiting their part of town?
My recent trip to London, meeting up with Nigee, and Lando's recent post about going to Detroit and possibly meeting up with Frank, got me wondering. If you were going somewhere and you knew someone from webdip lived there, who would you reach out to to have a beer with? Or a coffee if its Bosox ;-)
