Telephone numbers in a book
So for my book, I need a telephone number. Is there any way to make it look like a real number but still not risk actually putting someone else's number in the book? If not, what's the best/standard way to handle this? Just put down 10 numbers?

I suppose it works too if I use one of your phone numbers, but that could be a little weird when all my fans think 'oh hey! Would that phone number be real? Let's try!' :P

I think I solved it already. Never mind.

Try 9114762, it's a dedicated fake number.

It's also 7 digits, I didn't even know you meant that as a phone number until you said so, not very convincing I'd say...

Start the prefix with a 1 like (607) 164-2988. In the US, there are no prefixes start with 1 IIRC. I don't think there are area codes start with 1 either.

555 is a universal fake middle number. For instance, if you wanted a Detroit area fake number, it could be 248-555-2579 or whatnot. So you could have the right area code and everything.

I think the term we were both looking for is "exchange". :-)
steephie22 (182 D(S))
17 Aug 13 UTC
Hmm, the 555 middle number sounds like a good idea... Can it be the 4-6 digits as well?

I don't need it right now anymore though, but it's still good to know.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Aug 13 UTC
Where is the number from? Where is the story set? If it is US, it is always a 3 digit area code, 3 digit exchange, and 4 digit number. The 555 would alsways be the exchange as any four numbers may be the number and the area code will tell you the city or region (513 is Cincinnati and 859 is Northern Kentucky for instance).
steephie22 (182 D(S))
17 Aug 13 UTC
I think that's the same everywhere (3 digit are code), but I didn't know that and in this case it's a mobile phone. I thought middle number was just the part of the number in the middle, hence the question.

Also, it's Holland mostly, and other than that Europe, and possibly Turkey and/or Russia.

867-5309 was a real number in some area codes at the time as the users had to keep telling people that she didn't live there.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Aug 13 UTC
Then I will bow out cause I don't know how Europe works even with the 555 exchange. What is the 4-6 number comment. Do some.countries use longer than 4 digits on the actual number?

As far as the exchange, that goes back to the early days (before Europe had phones as they *are* a US invention, your welcome world!) when you dialed throw switchboards and told them an area, an exchange, and a number and they used patch cables to connect you. When direct dialing came around, area codes and exchange numbers were created to make it all work. Typically, cell area codes are baaed out of the area the subscriber lives in but with number portability and people moving around the world, that is no guarantee even for landlines and IP phones.

513-867-5309 is in Hamilton, Butler County, OH. But IIRC, Jenny was a real girl and that was her number. The bamd was getting revenge with that song.

I thought the phone was invented by an Italian who didn't have the money to get a patent?

What I'm more curious about is the mobile phone numbers though, are those also in that 3-3-4 way in US? Here it's 06- and then 8 numbers...
Alderian (2425 D(S))

All U.S. phone numbers are in the 3-3-4 format, whether they are cell/mobile phones, land-line phones, or I.P. phones.

Produce a Meucci prototype. You can't because they didn't exist. He claimed they were "lost".Supposedly, an Italian language newspaper reported on it, although they were the only one and no known copy of said article exists. No, Meucci never built a working telephone.

If you watch old American movies when they call someone, they tell the operator an area, then just a number. The older the movie or the smaller the town, the fewer digits. They'll say something like "operator, give me Los Angeles 5734" implying there were less than 10 000 phones in the LA area at the time.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Aug 13 UTC
Pennsylvania 6-5000 is another example. The entire state was divided into regions of 10,000 phones each approximately. So Pennsylvania 6-5000 meant PE 6, phone 5000.

Do you guys never communicate?
I have about 1699 game messages in the 26 games I've played so far.
When I check other players, they seem to communicate much less then me. SplitDiplomat for example: 926 games and only 2826 messages.

Am I a spammer?
