Telephone numbers in a book
So for my book, I need a telephone number. Is there any way to make it look like a real number but still not risk actually putting someone else's number in the book? If not, what's the best/standard way to handle this? Just put down 10 numbers?

Do you guys never communicate?
I have about 1699 game messages in the 26 games I've played so far.
When I check other players, they seem to communicate much less then me. SplitDiplomat for example: 926 games and only 2826 messages.

Am I a spammer?
redhouse1938 (429 D)
15 Aug 13 UTC
No, Split plays lots of message-less games ("gunboat" (no messages) or "public messages only" (no private messages).
From my perspective, you're too silent ;-)

We've had a couple threads looking at it before but, iirc, the top players tended to have 200-300 messages per press games. In some games, it'll top 1000. Don't worry about spamming. Of course, quality of press also matters though.
I'm not sure about how many press games I have played (I can't find myself in the classic GR list) but I'd say no more then 6-7.

Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

We don't have a reliable way to determine messages per game for many players. I have at least 170 gunboat game...but GR sheets don't account for games that were drawn by 1902...so I can't just back out the gunboat games from my total.

Also there is no distinction between live and non-live games, that makes a big difference in the amount of press per game.
Yonni (136 D(S))
15 Aug 13 UTC
You can just check the GR pages for FP games (or all games and subtract the GB GR games)
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
15 Aug 13 UTC
yeah, per WTA FP I have 14 games and 10,469 messages. That is 748 messages/game....

I don't think that is going to be accurate.

Now 259 all-time games less 170 GB games. So 89 games comes out to 118 messages per game. So, 75 of those are probably live games. But my point stands you can't get an accurate picture blending live and non-live together.

Is there a way to see # of messages for a specific game Yonni or you are just guessing at how many you sent?

Yonni (136 D(S))
15 Aug 13 UTC
You could in the old "messages" screen. If you copy all the messages to a word doc and search for "from me" or however it shows up, you can see how many messages you sent.

You can also search your own games for non-live, press games and count them.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
15 Aug 13 UTC
@Mayonaisepot, at ~65 messages per game, you are certainly not spamming. And as others have indicated, that's a bit on the low side.

I've got 10813 messages in 81 games for ~133 messages per game, and I know I'm a bit low compared to many of the better players. In the early years you should be talking with every other player multiple times every year. And later on you should still be talking with those who are fighting as well as your allies.

@Gen Lee, there is also the detail that some of us older players played gunboat on the honor system before it was officially supported. There is no way to be accurate without digging through the raw data itself, but an estimate is still useful.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

*sorry, that should read "every phase", not "every year".
Draugnar (0 DX)

29766 in 198 completed games or 150 per game roughly. You are way below normal.
I'm sitting around 215 messages per game. It's a healthy number, I do think. Though a few PP games take up the bulk of my messaging.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
15 Aug 13 UTC
I looked at what I think are my last 8 FP non-live games. Estimated 4008 messages or 510 per game. But that includes 2 outlier games of 1232 msgs and 944 msgs. Without those games I'm at approximately 317 msg/game.
More messages per game doesn't mean anything. It surely doesn't say someone is a better diplomat if he talked more.
And I have a feeling posters here want to say the one who has more messages is a better diplomat ?!?
How many of those messages were meaningless or unimportant? Like "how are you today?", or "we'll talk after I get a cup of coffee" etc.
even messages like "how are you today?" can be a sign of a good diplomat - it can serve to establish a better connection and a stronger relationship.
Maybe. But the more frequent me(a)ssaging could be annoying too. The point is the number of messages means shit. Higher number could mean you were longer in the game but certainly doesn't mean you were good,it only means you talked a lot.
i don't disagree (although really no player should really be annoyed by communication), but that's why it is important to discern what kind of player you are dealing with - it doesn't mean that the messages themselves are inherently superfluous. and i agree that more messages don't mean you're better, in themselves, but there is generally a positive correlation between skill and amount you message (in full-press).
What if two diplomats can arrange a deal in a couple of messages and the other couple needs 20 messages and lot's of repeating? Who are the better diplomats between the two couple?
Yonni (136 D(S))
15 Aug 13 UTC
SD (which one?!), I think most people recognize that volume of press isn't necessarily a sign of a good diplomat. However, I a common theme is that the more successful dilpomats do send several hundred or messages a game. OP's question was whether or not 50 per game was spamming...

Another thing is the chicken or egg argument. Sending meaningful press later in the game is a good sign that you're doing well which would also add to your press count.

I do doubt there's a good correlation between press/phase and performance once you get over a certain point but I don't think there's denying that someone you posts 200 messages a game will, generally, do better than someone who posts a quarter of that. Of course, it's not always the case though.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I just took the raw numbers to get my 150 per game. If you take into account a handful of PP and DB games, it probably reaches about 200 per. And the sooner one is eliminated, the less press, so the longer I survived, the more press like anyone else. I probably average 10-12 messages per movement phase in early and mid game with less late game if I'm in a solo run or more late game if stopping a solo.

I heard there were too many SD's in this topic.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
15 Aug 13 UTC
The more press the better the diplomat is definitely a fallacy.

But too little press is an indicator of a problem. Either your press or moves are bad and you are being eliminated quickly and/or you are not talking to people you should be talking to.

As Turkey you should be talking to England and France, even if it is just to say "How's your day been?" Everyone shares common neighbors with everyone, at least on the classic map and later on they may be your neighbors, so build the relationship from the get go.
@SD I agree with you and I told to SD there were too many SD's but SD said "fuck it,I disagree with you SD !"
I average about 250 messages per press game.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

~238 per game.

but if you're playing games with people who actually talk then you'll have a lot more to talk about.

If you don't send at least 6 messages in spring 1901 you're doing something wrong.
Subtracting 49 gunboats from my completed 81 games, I have 32 games and 5970 messages. So that's about 186 per game. That's up from the last time I calculated it, although my GR is down since then.
