Java Appalet version of diplomacy
I'm surprised given the popularity of live gunboat over the years that nobody has ever developed a live engine for it. Seems like constantly having to hit board buttons or refresh is outdated. This is not 2003. I also understand the difficulty in creating such a program.
Also seems like there should be a computer AI which takes over for CD countries and uses logic and math based forumula to make at least some semblence of moves.

Country draw
From what I understand, country draw is almost, but not quite, random. What calculation is used? It seems to me that this can be slightly problematic at times, especially when multiple games are started at the same time. The gunboat tournament where almost everybody drew 7g4c the first round seems logical suddenly.

Why David Cameron is such a tw*t !!!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/23225645
This is why our Prime MInister is such a tw*t. He intends the tennis final at Wimbledon and is now convinced that Andy Murray is the most deserving person of a knighthood ...... what a pathetic idiot !!
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Jul 13 UTC
What did he intend at Wimbledon? Did he intend for there to be a winner and some losers? Did he intend to have fun?

It is a kick in the teeth for servicemen that have been on the front line fighting the Taliban day in day out for the last 10 years, risking their life on a daily basis, and then coming home to find out they have been made unemployed. Or families that have lost loved ones and have to fight the govt to get a decent payout to bring up their fatherless children for the next 10-20 years.
Andy Murray stands to make £20 million from winning Wimbledon and yet our PM doesn't think that is enough, no, he deserves to be called Sir Andy Murray.
If ever you wanted to know is wrong in British society here it is in a nutshell.
I feel like kicking that tw*t in the face.

Much as I don't like Cameron, I can't really blame him for trying to encourage some national pride. I did find this rather more amusing though. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/68604000/jpg/_68604286_salmond_flag.jpg

Is it that big of a deal, Nigee?

I mean, if actors and singers can get knighted, with Elton John and Kenneth Branagh getting the honor (and both are fantastic, make no doubt) who cares if an athlete gets knighted?

Is it really that big of a deal anymore? I guess it must be, but still...

When entertainers--albeit fantastic entertainers--are getting the honor, is it really such a rarified thing anymore?

@Invictus - I'm a patriot - I support the BBC because I know the govt despise them because they can not control them, that is the beauty of the BBC, that fight to stay beyond the clutches of the ruling elite; they don't always succeed. They get criticised constantly by the MPs so they must be doing a good job.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Jul 13 UTC
Same argument could be made for Fox News, but all that means is Fox news is a right wing extremist (read Tea Party) mouthpiece.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

The BBC get criticised constantly by right-wingers for being Commies, which they obviously are not, the MPs just can't bear to be held accountable for their failings by an organisation they provide funding for.

"But if I use different news sources then I'll get conflicting views so I won't know what to believe! "

Stick with Fox News, the New York Post and the Daily Mail - I think you'll find something you like there
For something a bit sexy try Al-Jazeera

@NigeeBaby: "an organisation they provide funding for"

Correction: an organisation that *we* provide funding for. An organisation that, if you want to watch television in the UK, you have to pay for. An organisation that is demonstrably biased (source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/bbc/10159120/BBC-has-escaped-with-little-more-than-mild-admonishment-after-liberal-bias-report-admits-senior-presenter.html) and covered up child abuse by some of its 'stars'.

I'm not sure which part of that constitutes 'doing a good job'.

Re: Cameron at the tennis, presumably you were just as furious to see Ed Miliband and Alec Salmond there as well. On a Sunday.

Personally I think you're all being a little too hard on FOX News...

They're on par with perfectly-legitimate, reputable sources--

Another tw*t telling the educational establishment what a jerk he is
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-23222068
Education MInister Gove is a clown ...... if this is what private education does for a person then I think our kids are better off without it. The cabinet is full of Old-Etonians and must be the worst advert for privately funded education I have ever seen, they have all Mastered in Arrogance and Minored in Ignorance .... now they are telling us our kids need 'stretching', bring back the rack as a form of punishment for traitors, it is the moronic politicians that need a bit of 'stretching' ......

David Cameron is a terrible, terrible person, but this is about the least offensive thing he has ever done. And regarding the BBC, they're remarkably centrist. For example, their coverage of the Israel/Palestine conflict is a long, long way from showing any kind of liberal bias. If you really want a biased news source, you should try reading the telegraph.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

TOgilvie (845 D)
08 Jul 13 UTC
Not that @mendax will trust it, being from the Telegraph, but one instance of the BBC's bias on Israel/Palestine: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/bbc/8402973/A-family-slaughtered-in-Israel-doesnt-the-BBC-care.html

The Telegraph has an agenda, of course, but then if I don't want to read it I don't pay for it. The BBC on the other hand...

"David Cameron is a terrible, terrible person, but this is about the least offensive thing he has ever done."

...What's wrong with David Cameron?

I mean that sincerely, I'm not endorsing him, he's just sort of seemed like a non-entity during his term, at least as far as I've heard...not scandalized like Gordon Brown or charismatic-then-fallen like Tony Blair (again, not my assessments, more of a generalized picture of them.)

How is he a terrible person?
Invictus (240 D)

Because he's not Labour, obviously.
Hereward77 (930 D)

What Invictus said.

There's no real substance to this attack when framed against even rudimentary levels of information about knighthoods and other politicians of all parties.
Octavious (2701 D)
08 Jul 13 UTC
Of course Murry will get a Knighthood. He's already got an OBE courtesy of the Olympics, and being the first Brit to win Wimbledon since Hitler was organising international athletics has to be recognised to be consistent. A Knighthood is the only viable award.

There are people here who read Gorgeous George's website?!? Good good! A more self serving arse has never cursed politics.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

@obiwan

The biggest thing wrong with David Cameron is that half his ministers are atrocious and he doesn't do anything about it. (eg. Moving Jeremy Hunt from culture after his great success there, to healthcare. Might as well have just kept Langsley, they're both as unpopular and stubborn as each other.)

In the Gordon Brown days*, only Alistair Darling was in the news as much as Brown. Whereas Osbourne & Gove seem to end up with more news coverage than Cameron himself these days. And quite rightly, most of it's negative.

*Note: I am not saying Gordon Brown was any better. Labour losing power was the best thing that could have happened for the Labour party.
mendax (321 D)
08 Jul 13 UTC
Actually, Invictus, I'm no fan of the Labour party either.

Apple, Post-Jobs
Whether or not you like Apple products, you'd have a hard time arguing the Apple hasn't revolutionized the phone and computer industries over the last 5 years. Recently though, we've seen a lot of trends that are very unApple: products being released before they're ready (Maps) and seemingly random design changes. Is this the typically laziness that comes with being on top for too long, or is it a direct result of losing Jobs?

How does account sitting work on this site? Do you mail the mods telling them when you're away and who you wish to sit you. Tell your password to that player, and that's it? Or is it more complicated than that.
I ask as I may need sitting in the near future, I'm going on holiday in a few weeks, and I don't wish to ask for a pause for over a weeks time.
