Can't say there's many that did braver things than what they did in that plant. Amazing in the least. RIP

Java Appalet version of diplomacy
I'm surprised given the popularity of live gunboat over the years that nobody has ever developed a live engine for it. Seems like constantly having to hit board buttons or refresh is outdated. This is not 2003. I also understand the difficulty in creating such a program.
Also seems like there should be a computer AI which takes over for CD countries and uses logic and math based forumula to make at least some semblence of moves.

Country draw
From what I understand, country draw is almost, but not quite, random. What calculation is used? It seems to me that this can be slightly problematic at times, especially when multiple games are started at the same time. The gunboat tournament where almost everybody drew 7g4c the first round seems logical suddenly.

Idea for an improvement, click +1 if you like it.
Here's an idea for adding a new element to Diplomacy games: "The Treaty".

I doubt its that difficult jmo, just create text like agreements and announce them publicly in public press or something, or privately for that matter. they dont need to be followed by the computer to verify the agreement is being upheld (altho it would be cool) and when someone violates the agreement even then only the persons involved would be the ones who would pullout or break the agreement. check out how Risk II does its AI/cpu oppnents. not complicated at all

then again this raises the point why not just leave it up to the players to broadcast these treaties in public/private press by themselves

i agree with JECEs point #3

rollerfiend: "dudes, i don't know why redhouse is getting so much heat for suggesting this idea."

As a member of the "con" camp, I'll try to explain. Someone made a poker analogy upthread and it's apt. Years ago I was playing poker at a friend's house, and a couple different times after winning a pot because no one would call my bet, his roommate grabbed my cards after I threw them in and looked at what my hand had been.

If there are any card players among you, you will know that is extremely bad etiquette. If it had been my house I would have asked him to leave. If I were a less civilized person, fisticuffs may have resulted.

Essentially redhouse's proposal would legalize looking at my cards after the hand to see if I'd bluffed or not. It would seem to undermine the very foundation of the game, at least as I understand it.

As for a real world comparison, think not so much of ambassadors and heads of state and whatnot - think more along the lines of those anonymous power brokers in dark smoky back rooms, making deals on a handshake and the power of their reputation, doing the dirt no one WANTS to put in writing.

@Hazel-Rah - Love the poker analogy and, yeah, if everyone has folded, they haven't bought the privilege of seeing my cards. Had someone done that at my table, they would be ejected form the game and any money on the table given to the person whose cards they looked at. If they wanted to complain, the could talk to my Louisville Slugger.

Oh, and I love your name. Haven't heard it since the last time I read or watched Watership Down.

Re: messing with Calhamer,
That's totally beside the point. There is absolutely nothing in the original rules that would prohibit writing some standardized pieces of papers that you put certain basic info on that you put into an archive for later studying of the game. But whatever.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Jul 13 UTC
As long as nobody except the person "writing the paper" knew what was on it or even new it existed during the game. But if *any* of it was visible while the game was going on (even the existence of the treaty), it becomes a tool that others will use against those who don't do the treaties.

+1 to Draugnar for having read Watership Down!

I tried signing up as "General Woundwort" but messed it up somehow and couldn't log in to that account. So not knowing any better I made a new one as Hazel-Rah instead. Later I figured I'd better ask the mods to delete Woundwort so I didn't get banned as a multi.

I'd have much rather been Woundwort, he's such a badass. Oh well.

I've actually read it several times. It and Plague Dogs are both outstanding novels.
Hazel-Rah (1262 D)

The Plague Dogs had the worst, laziest cop-out of a deus ex machina ending that I'd ever read. It was so offensive to me that it tainted the entire book.

Apparently it was a dumbed-down American edition, which tacked on a crappy sappy happy ending, along with simplifying some of the Gaelic dialects used by some of the characters. I need to find an original English edition, because I remember really enjoying it up until the very end.

An easier read as they were intended for pre teens and teens, but Biran Jacques Redwall series is pretty good overall. No Watership Down, but good nonetheless.

So my rich and snooty Aunt is coming to visit my house, and I've just noticed it has a rather powerful "animal" smell from my stupid cats.

Fellow pet owners, I intend to clean, but what do you guys do to make sure the air doesn't have that unpleasant pet smell?

It is Truly Sad...
...That you can't even go to a philharmonic without a majority of the songs being 'pop' oriented. On the other hand, I did get to see Miss America 2010 (who went to Massaponax High School, my school's second biggest rival) sing, however unprofessional she may be...
Perhaps I should have taken a more direct approach in starting this thread, but I wanted to get to the point that the concert was on the borderline between 'Amazing' and 'Disastrous.'

Apple, Post-Jobs
Whether or not you like Apple products, you'd have a hard time arguing the Apple hasn't revolutionized the phone and computer industries over the last 5 years. Recently though, we've seen a lot of trends that are very unApple: products being released before they're ready (Maps) and seemingly random design changes. Is this the typically laziness that comes with being on top for too long, or is it a direct result of losing Jobs?

How does account sitting work?
How does account sitting work on this site? Do you mail the mods telling them when you're away and who you wish to sit you. Tell your password to that player, and that's it? Or is it more complicated than that.
I ask as I may need sitting in the near future, I'm going on holiday in a few weeks, and I don't wish to ask for a pause for over a weeks time.
