England:
My EoG will a little bit differ from my usual 'style', because I promised SoW students to write in a way that helps them understand the difference between moves and strategy, and why I think moves are not that important at all.
I will go year by year, so the reader can follow it on the map too ...
1901:
I got England, I hate it :). Nowadays I prefer southern opening, strongly anti-English, because it sends the message to Germany right away, I want to ally with him against France. That was exactly my plan here too. So I opened English Channel+Wales. I didn't risk bouncing Brest so I went to mid atlantic, hoping Germany will join me in my endeavour.
1902:
Germany bouncing Russia and building two armies showed he got the message. I was happy, so I sent my 2nd fleet towards Frnace and left North Sea empty, not to pose any threat towards Germany.
1903:
Germany crossed the red line, he has built a 3rd fleet, clearly stating he will not go against France, furthermore he was already at 7 SCs. So I immidiately put up my 'Draw' vote, signaling France, I'm changing my mind, and I took north sea and north atlantic, showing France, I cannot harm him at all.
Luckily France had much more understanding about the game and he took belgium, while I took both sweden and Holland. We basically crushed Germany in 1 single round. All because he has built a 3rd fleet.
1904:
From this point it was clear Germany is no longer a threat, it's just a matter of time until we finish him. So I started thinking about post-german times, what will happen after he's gone. Clearly my new enemy will be France, who has just built his 4th fleet, making him a hard nut to crack.
Anyway, we started fighting against germany, mainly for position rather then SCs. I knew I will take him over, he already had a huge positional disadvante against me.
None of us (F,G,E) built or disbanded anything. Just repositioned ourselves.
1905:
It was clear France will get 2 SCs, while I'd get none, so I had no other choice but to take 1 from him. I was hoping he won't get angry. But as I helped him, I felt it fair. Anyway, he was always cautius, his moves always indicated he is expecting my stab. I had no idea at this point how will I break him.
My 1st thought was, I can break him on mainland, since he has a ton of fleets, he's vulnerable on mainland. Luckily my white knight has arrived in the form of Italy. Italy got behind his lines, I knew it will cause some disturbance there, and that's my opportunity.
1906:
after builds I moved on him gently, because I was still busy with Germany, after careful planning I maintained my SC count, but I got into better position. Meanwhile Italy advanced as well. All that sad, this year was spent with complicated maneuvering.
1907: all that maneuvering resulted 2 builds for me, none for France.
More importantly I managed to spare my north sea unit, and take english channel. I was planning this all along, I knew it's critical to be there, but it was impossible to move there earliear.
--- !! ---
Also Russia finally retook his home SCs, meaning I had to make my decision at this point (yes at 9 SCs) which will be my 18th SC. If you want to have a solo, you have to know. There were two options, Warshaw or Tunis. Russia was packed with armies, without fleet building capabilities anywhere, pressuring Turkey, effectively, while both France and Italy were making their mistakes down in the Mediterranean. Also, there was 1 more important argument beside Tunis. If I let Russia grow, he will crush Turkey, which will result less fleets in the Mediterranean, which I desperately need, if I want to take Tunis.
This is important to see, this decision, and all the coming moves were done on this purpose.
1908:
I moved on France, I didn't make the slightest threat towards russia. More importantly, I didn't go or tried for Berlin by army. I wanted Russia to feel as comfortable as he can. So from this point, the main objective was, KILL ALL THE FLEETS!
I knew whenever I take a french SC he will disband a fleet, Russia will kill Turkish fleets (as it happened this year), so my only possible enemy is Italy. I have to prevent italy from getting builds. Luckily Russia also took an Italian SC, resulting no new fleets! Yeey! :)
1909:
I built a new fleet, and went against France full throttle, mainly on the seas. I knew, italy will not be able to hold mediterranean with only 3 fleets, therefore I basically won this game at this point. There were only 5 fleets possible fighting me. Assuming I can kill the French units anytime, it was only 3 really. There was no way they could have stopped me at this point. There's a stalemate line, which can be built with 3 fleets, italy was nowhere near.
All I had to do, was to secure Muniich+Berlin, as the stalemate line's northern part, the rest is only question of time.
By autumn I went into north Africa. This was the most critical move in the entire game(!) Seriously. From that point I knew I will easily take Tunis. There were still 4 french SCs, but who cares, those are sporadic, unable to cooperate, and I'm in mediterranean! Also, once I'm in north africa, no stalemate line exists which can be held with 3 fleets and 1 army. And Italy hadn't got a 5th unit.
1910:
3 builds. Time for the armies, which will secure the stalemate. It needed some planning how to convoy them properly, not risking losing anything and advancing more into the mediterranean.
My 2nd fleet got into the mediterranean, making it impossible for Italy to stalemate me, with 3 fleets, impossible.
Building up the stalemate line was a little bit time critical, but Russia was in no hurry, so I could do it comfortably, even more, I could take my 3rd fleet to mid-atlantic.
1911-1913:
From this point it was really just the matter of time, carefully planned moves, but basically the game was won by this time. The rest is history :)
A few general thoughts:
Except France, guys, what game were you playing at all? Russia was completely careless about the draw, he should have moved on me waaaaaay earlier, also he should have let Turkey live.
Italy was doing some really crazy stuff, I'm sorry to say Italy, but you are playing in a completely different league. Also attacking austria is stupid. You don't do that at this level. Not in the first years for sure. Sorry Barn3tt, I really admire you and your play, but this time, it wasn't you I think.
Turkey not building fleets made some sense in the early years, but I think that has led to his demise later as well. He was fighting for territories which he cannot hold. Complete waste of resorces. Bad judgement on building armies, because you cannot hold what you get with those! As it turned out to be true once again.
Germany, you had some good moves, but that 3rd fleet was a big mistake I think. I really enjoyed fighting around denmark and scandinavia :)
France, I'm sorry, you were the only one I really saw understanding what's happening on the board, you were cautious with me, and you planned your moves till the very end. I'm sorry, Italy and Russia just screwed all of you.
