Pause error?
Two of my games just spontaneously went into pause without any of the players voting "pause". Is this happening to anyone else? Is there a bug?

MAD MARX GUNBOAT CHALLENGE
MadMarx is, without argument, the best player on this site. He claims to be bored, though, with his regular rotation of classic Diplomacy games. So why not try something new? I challenge you, MM, to a single game of gunboat with some of the top gunboaters on this site. You can have final approval over pot size, phase length, and the other players in the game. What do you say?

Austria EoG: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=115286

Not a fan of Austria in gunboat, but that's the great power I had in one of my other games, so I used the same "Barn3tt approved" approach as in the other game, as far as opening moves. My plan was to ally with Italy long term, though of course being open to whatever the board may suggest regardless of that. Italy got in position to Lepanto, which was great. In spring 1903 I was able to support Greece into Bulgaria, which was exciting, but Italy convoyed into Greece that fall, which was not a big issue for me, I was fine with equal growth between Italy and myself. Spring 1904 saw the Italian army in Greece support hold at Serbia, a province that had only one enemy unit adjacent to it and thus was not under threat, rather than support the clearly vulnerable Bulgaria, which made me Mad. Clearly Italy did this on purpose, to limit my growth. Not much I could do about it at the moment, but the scenario was not lost on me. By spring 1905, Italy had claimed Bulgaria for himself, which in the moment seemed fine since he took it from Turkey, but I still felt it should be mine, and when you add Italy taking Munich and having an army in Armenia, it appeared Italy was about to bust out and since he surrounded me, I assumed my days in the game were severely numbered. Luckily for me, that spring phase France shifted to West Med, and had Tunis free for the taking. I hoped Italy would vacate Greece to get in position to take Tunis back the next year (guessing Italy would build a fleet in Rome or Naples and thus use Ionian to support that fleet to Tyrr in the spring), to go along with Venice that was unexpected left open when Italy walked into Munich in the spring, and it played out as I had hoped.

That was about the only thing to write home about this game. I enjoyed being surrounded by enemy fleets with no armies to present any threat for some time. France was a major annoyance in Ionian for a few years, but luckily England stabbed France and got him to give me enough breathing room to take out the Turk. I assume one of the better gunboaters could have grabbed a solo once England and France got into it a bit, starting around 1911, but I had trouble pushing north and west while Turkey was still of enough size to cause me major headaches, so I went conservative and focused on killing Turkey, which gave E/F plenty of time to stalemate me.

Thanks for these three gunboat games, everyone, I'm glad they are over! My only other game will finish in the next few days, then I'm taking a few months off, at least, but I probably won't be back until after I run the Columbia Gorge Marathon on October 27th!! :-)

Well played, MM. I think that I had one botched order (should have taken Sev one season and didn't), but I'm not sure that would have delayed the inevitable (with E and F keeping each other busy in the west). Fought off Italy's first Lepanto, but was soon facing another army landing in my back yard. Austria was able to pick up Italy's 3 home centers, while Italy kept me boxed in in Turkey. By the time I got out of my corner, Austria was huge and I was facing an uphill battle. Strong showing all around from MM.

Have you run any Marathons before?

Thanks, Master Barn3tt!!

Gen. Lee, I am no runner... I think in high school I had to run 5 miles for the "final exam" of my PE Conditioning class, that's about it... I've always hated running, too, but when a guy turns 40 and is trying to have his first child with his 40 year old wife, he is willing to go to the extremes to motivate himself to get in shape. In the first 2.5 weeks I've lost 8 pounds. First day off the couch I ran 3 miles in 31 minutes, 40 second (surprised I could do it without stopping to walk, but over a 10 minute mile was pretty humbling), ten days later I ran 3 miles in 28:46, and two days ago I did it in 26:09. I'm going to run a 10k tomorrow, see how that goes. I'm in the first week of the following training schedule:

Hal higdon is a good program I recommend it to new runners all the time. I just signed up for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon on 12/7/13 and also the Savannah Rock N Roll Marathon on 11/9/13. I've only run 2 previously Chicago and Space Coast. 2WL has done a ton of them. Good luck training, be careful it is addictive running these things.:D

Good luck Marx! Higdon is a good program, I'll vouch for that one. Protip: if it hurts, go run. If it hurts more, stop; if it hurts less, keep going. But if you turn out to be as good at running if you are at Diplomacy, you shouldn't have any issues :)

China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador--Snowden's Idea of a "Free State?"
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/snowden-washington-reaction-182004272.html "The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela" I have to agree...explain to me again how this guy's a symbol for freedom again (and again, do so WITHOUT saying "Well, the NSA was wrong--" YES. YES IT WAS. That does NOT mean this guy's good...really? Why pick those states, if he couldn't stand what the NSA was doing...they're not exactly Paradises of Government Transparency either...)

I want to be a league Substitute Please
Hi! I have been here at WebDiplomacy since the start of the year. Have played a lot of fun games and have been doing OK. Someone suggested that league games were a lot more strategic and the "done thing" was to sign up via the forums. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Joel.

So in Holland, as in all other countries, there are kids teased in schools. The government has gone through great lengths to "protect them", a dangerous development if you ask me.

interest in a 17 player world gunboat tourney?
I was thinking anywhere from 5-8 games depending on the interest. 5 pts. 24 hour turns.

If interested, please pm me, and I can set up a tournament. This seems to be the only way to get rid of metas....

I have two questions to ask.
1. If I don't like a player and don't want to pause the game per that person's request, can the Mod pauses the game for that person?

2. If a person does not want to work and I don't want to give the person's my spare changes, can the government tax me then give the other person some welfare?
