Two of my games just spontaneously went into pause without any of the players voting "pause". Is this happening to anyone else? Is there a bug?

MAD MARX GUNBOAT CHALLENGE
MadMarx is, without argument, the best player on this site. He claims to be bored, though, with his regular rotation of classic Diplomacy games. So why not try something new? I challenge you, MM, to a single game of gunboat with some of the top gunboaters on this site. You can have final approval over pot size, phase length, and the other players in the game. What do you say?

I want to be a league Substitute Please
Hi! I have been here at WebDiplomacy since the start of the year. Have played a lot of fun games and have been doing OK. Someone suggested that league games were a lot more strategic and the "done thing" was to sign up via the forums. Can anyone help? Thanks.

People have the right to have an opinion. I have the right to not respect their opinion. I have the right to criticize their opinion. I have the right to criticize the person for holding the opinion. Other people have those same rights regarding my opinions. It's more important to respect these rights, than to respect opinions.
Too funny,

For someone who sits in judgment of others' reading comprehension, you sure to miss the point a lot.

That's a new one, saving the world through trolling web forums. Good luck with that.

"I have the right to criticize the person for holding the opinion."

Actually, you shouldn't. On that we disagree. Everyone has opinions and some are just wrong, but the person should still be respected even if their opinion is not. I respect you despite disagreeing with you. I repect Jack_Klein despite disagreeing with him. The only people I don't repect are people who won't respect me over a simple difference of opinion as respect is a two way street. Maybe when you grow a bit older and discover that you can respect the person without repecting their views, you'll come to see that.

Thanks! What point did I miss?

> Actually, you shouldn't. On that we disagree. Everyone has opinions and some are just wrong, but the person should still be respected even if their opinion is not.

Criticizing someone is not the same as disrespecting them. (Some people should be disrespected too, but personal criticism can go hand in hand with respect.)
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Jun 13 UTC
Ok. I can accept that. But how you criticize a person reflects the level of respect you have for them. So far, much of your criticism has been lacking in the respect area.
gavrilop (357 D)
26 Jun 13 UTC
That's possible. We may have differing views of what constitutes respect though. The only one I think I've deliberately disrespected was the person who said "this isn't an argument of citations."

gavrilop (357 D)

There is just as much evidence that hell doesn't exist, as there is evidence that a dragon does not exist in my garage.

It's a Carl Sagan routine, but it's no joke.

Also there is the fact that you can trace the development of the doctrine of hell. It's a Greek introduction; Jews have never believed in it. If Jesus existed, he wouldn't have believed in it either. The people who've done more work on this subject (than anybody else I know of) are http://www.tentmaker.org/ if you're interested.

I don't know. I'm not convinced one way or the other.

> And I'm pretty sure Judaism is just as judgmental as any of the other religions that came directly from Judaism... don't fool yourself.

Jewish people are encouraged to judge behavior as moral or immoral, sure. But they do not have hell.

"Jewish people are encouraged to judge behavior as moral or immoral, sure. But they do not have hell."

Arguing that with a Jewish person is a bad idea.

Olam Haba - the coming world. The world after the Messiah has returned, which we believe has not occurred thus far. God has judged both the currently living and the past dead, and those that have been judged as righteous move on to a second life in this new realm.

The better realm to discuss though is גהנום, pronounced in Hebrew "g'hinnom," the Valley of Hinnom, which actually does exist near Jerusalem - remarkably similar to the Greek word pronounced Gehenna, one you may have heard in reference to Hell. You might also look at the etymology of the word and realize the similarity to Jahannam, the Islamic word for hell. G'hinnom, according to most rabbis I can find on the subject, is the place in Hebraic lore for those that have done wrong and deserve to be punished in the afterlife. Souls, though, were only punished with a (lunar) year in the realm, as that much time spent there was considered a worthy punishment for nearly any offense.

The Book of Isaiah does not mention this place specifically by name, only as the "burning place" to which the Assyrians would be expelled. Reference to this place is extremely frequent in the Mishnah.

While no mention of the afterlife is in the Torah, that's not much more than a slight portion of Judaism; there's plenty more. Please read up, you've obviously got work left to do before you can tell me about the religion that has grown me, accepted me, and confirmed me as one of its own.

And, P.S. - Jesus existed. He was a human being in Rome. No question. In what form he existed is up for debate.

> Souls, though, were only punished with a (lunar) year in the realm, as that much time spent there was considered a worthy punishment for nearly any offense.

Right. And that's what Christians would recognize as Purgatory, not Hell. My intended audience is people who believe in Christian Hell, which is permanent.

There is a lot more I could learn about Judaism, but I knew everything you just said. I even know that the bit about the lunar year is from the Talmud. (I thought had heard that it was a year and a day, but I might be confusing that with something else.)

> And, P.S. - Jesus existed. He was a human being in Rome. No question. In what form he existed is up for debate.

Except this. There's plenty of question about it.

@gavrilop – as a person who likes to participate in the threads about the Christianity, the meaning of life and human values why don't you introduce yourself to the community of webdip and tell them about the human values you promote and admire. Talk to people about the murderer who caused the first world war and whos name you proudly stand through your nickname.
I believe the most of our webdip members haven't heard anything about the man so why shouldn't they all know about the person you admire;
From WikipediaGavrilo Princip ; 25 July 1894 – 28 April 1918) was Yugoslavian who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his pregnant wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. Princip and his accomplices were arrested and implicated a number of members of the Serbian military, leading Austria-Hungary to issue a démarche to Serbia known as the July Ultimatum. This was used as the excuse for the First World War. On 28 June 1914, General Oskar Potiorek, Governor of the Austrian provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina had invited Franz Ferdinand and Countess Sophie to the opening of a hospital.
Just before 10 a.m. on Sunday, the royal couple arrived in Sarajevo by train. In the front car was Fehim Čurčić, the Mayor of Sarajevo and Dr. Gerde, the city's Commissioner of Police. Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were in the second car with Oskar Potiorek and Lieutenant Colonel Count Franz von Harrach. The car's top was rolled back in order to allow the crowds a good view of its occupants.
The six conspirators lined the route. They were spaced out along the Appel Quay, each one with instructions to try to kill Franz Ferdinand when the royal car reached his position. The first conspirator on the route to see the royal car was Muhamed Mehmedbašić. Standing by the Austro-Hungarian Bank, Mehmedbašić lost his nerve and allowed the car to pass without taking action. Mehmedbašić later said that a policeman was standing behind him and feared he would be arrested before he had a chance to throw his bomb.[8]
At 10:15, when the six car procession passed the central police station, nineteen-year-old student Nedeljko Čabrinović hurled a hand grenade at the Archduke's car. The driver accelerated when he saw the object flying towards him, but the bomb had a 10 second delay and exploded under the wheel of the fourth car. Two of the occupants, Eric von Merizzi and Count Ludwig Joseph von Boos-Waldeck[disambiguation needed] were seriously wounded. About a dozen spectators were also hit by bomb shrapnel.
After Čabrinović's bomb missed the Archduke's car, four other conspirators, including Princip, lost an opportunity to attack because of the heavy crowds and the high speed of the Archduke's car. To avoid capture, Čabrinović swallowed a cyanide capsule and jumped into the River Miljacka to make sure he died. The cyanide pill was expired and made him sick, but failed to kill him and the River Miljacka was only 10 centimetres (4 in) deep. A few seconds later he was hauled out and detained by police. In order to avoid the city centre, General Oskar Potiorek decided that the royal car should travel straight along the Appel Quay to the Sarajevo Hospital. However, Potiorek forgot to inform the driver, Leopold Loyka, about this decision. On the way to the hospital, Loyka took a right turn into Franz Josef Street.
Princip was standing near Moritz Schiller's cafe after eating a sandwich he had recently bought having apparently given up, when he spotted Franz Ferdinand's car as it drove past, having taken the wrong turn. After realizing the mistake, the driver put his foot on the brake, and began to reverse the car. In doing so the engine of the car stalled and the gears locked, giving Princip his opportunity. Princip stepped forward, drew his pistol (a .380 caliber FN Model 1910[9]), pistol-whipped a nearby pedestrian, and at a distance of about 1.5 m (five feet), fired twice into the car. Franz Ferdinand was hit in the neck and Sophie (who instinctively covered Franz's body with her own after the first shot) in the abdomen. They both died before 11:00

Fun game, but I've already got one picked out if Split is serious. I don't want to unintentionally offend people. So it will be far more offensive, but it will be one which I understand the implications of.
I'm not offended by your username gavrilop,I said:"let people know which human values you advertise by your username...". If you say your username has no importance to you I have nothing to object on that. It's about transparency only, you haven't chosen it without a reason,I believe...

My reason is that I wanted to play Diplomacy for the second time ever, I found this website, I thought "let's see, it's a game about World War 1, what do I know about World War 1? uhhhh, hm."

Turns out the answer is not much. I did not consider the possibility that someone in Croatia might think "that guy was bad for my country." Or whatever you're thinking. I really don't know, because, uhhhh, hm.

"@gavrilop – as a person who likes to participate in the threads about the Christianity, the meaning of life and human values why don't you introduce yourself to the community of webdip and tell them about the human values you promote and admire."

Yeah, what SplitDiplomat said.
No gavrilop,I don't think so,it's nothing about politics or something like that. He wasn't "a guy that was bad for a country",but a guy who was bad for the mankind. He was a terrorist and a mass murderer who caused a world war.Although the world war 1 would probably have happened without him having done what he has done...
So I'm just curious what you think about the guy whos name you are carrying. Was it a fun thing to use it as a nickname or you are his "fan" actually?
gavrilop (357 D)
26 Jun 13 UTC
I don't think about him, dude. I'm an American. European history is King George and then Adolf Hitler. Why are you still going on about it if you claim you're not offended? I'm not here to kiss your ass and answer to you. If you want me to change the username I will. But you can fuck off either way.
I am Serbian and I think bad about historic figure of Gavrilo Princip, but saying that that kid caused WWI is at least to say - funny! :D Please feel free to check out my opinion, you dont even have to read books, although it would be prefered, many historians from all over the world wrote books on causes of that world conflict and there are interviews with them on you tube. Thanks...

1. If I don't like a player and don't want to pause the game per that person's request, can the Mod pauses the game for that person?

2. If a person does not want to work and I don't want to give the person's my spare changes, can the government tax me then give the other person some welfare?
