Referring to black people as animals certainly has a longer and more extensive history than referring to members of the press as animals. I have absolutely seen people denigrate black people as animals before. Members of the press is a new one. I suppose it's not, *completely* impossible, it does seem unlikely though. And given the history of calling black people animals, perhaps even if they were denigrating her status as a member of the press instead, if they didn't want to be accused of racism, they should have avoided something that has been used, (not as commonly as other terms I grant you, but used nonetheless), as a racial slur?

Also the argument that if they really were racists, they'd have said the n-word, doesn't exactly hold water. I mean, surely the point of throwing peanuts and then saying "this is how we feed animals" is a reference to the fact that some people in real life really do toss things like peanuts and other small foodstuffs to animals in order to feed them. Saying what you suggest just doesn't make sense.

Now, that's not to say they did it simply to be racist. I'm sure they wanted to do something to offend her because of her affiliation with the relatively "liberal" CNN. But using racist language in an attempt to denigrate someone who you dislike for non-racist reasons is still racist!

Irony of ironyies is that while obitard tries to say it wouldn't happen at the DNC, Ms. Cornwall clearly states she isn't surprised and fully expects it could well happen there as well. Representing this one story as something that is being covered up unfairly is disingenuous too. As though white on black crime is always a huge deal in the media or something. Yes, there are some high profile cases we've all heard of. There are also tons we haven't heard of, except in rare cases where it gains national prominence for some other, often unpredictable reason, this kind of violent crime, tends to stay pretty local, and only makes minor headlines internationally This not unusual. I find this kind of distracting and derailing technique in a debate disingenuous (the alliteration however, was accidental).

As an LA native I'm aware of that...but still, you cannot deny that the worst and most lasting and virulent areas of racial strife and discrimination WAS the Jim Crow South.

Those were still all one-off events, not the sort of decades-long thing the Jim Crow South was, where racial segregation was institutionalized to the point where troopers had to escort black students into Littlerock and governors shouted "Segregation now, segregation forever" from the state building.

But for the longest-standing instances of *institutionalized* racism, where it became a way of life and wasn't just a one-off riot, the Jim Crow South "wins" that prize.
