Here comes a storm!
Post all Hurricane Isaac related news here.

I would normally be worried, but, well, you know. The land has ways of shutting down them storms to make sure they don't do too much damage, so as long as it's a legitimate hurricane I think we'll be okay.

How I broke my computer with Avast
So, I ran a full scan with Avast yesterday and it found several thousand files that it classified as threats. I looked through them a bit, many seemed to be .dlls but but without giving it a lot of thought I instructed Avast to attempt repairs. This seems to have been a terrible mistake.

Republican National Convention Speeches
Evaluations so far, and then afterward, when Romney's given his?
(To go first--don't agree with him, obviously, but CLINT EASTWOOD IS HILARIOUS!) xD

Can he follow that? Do ya feel lucky, Romney? Well, do ya? ;)

What's the point....so idiot liberal Demon-crats can blindly attack the speeches and Republi-pukes can blindly.kindly praise them?

Eastwood was hilarious and weird....brilliant...and the left will *destroy* him for having the wrong opinion.

Rubio would have been equal to Ryan....and he's a fool if he doesn't run in 2020....but Ryan will be the nominee in 2020....best he can hope for is 2024 or 2028.
Rubio is far from the only RNC speaker who has their eye on 2016.
And krellin... I'm amused that you're willing to declare who will be the nominee in *2020*. Forecasting that kind of thing 8 years out is a fool's errand.
Yeah, it's hindsight that's 2020, lol.

Chris Christie's whole speech was about himself. They all think Romney is going to lose.
Also - Ryan's speech - most dishonest one ever? That plant he whined about closed under Bush. Keep the lies coming, Repugs.
Rubio's was all about himself also. Pretty much all of them have been autobiographical. Romney barely gets mentioned. It should tell you a lot...

Romney sounds like a school child with a 4.2 GPA who rehearsed his speech so many times that he has it all mapped out in his head, and that's all fine and all - but he is not sounding powerful. His speech is meant to invoke power but I don't get that from him. Political jokes and talking points aside, he sounds the same that Nixon did against Kennedy (not in the same way, just contextually). Obama speaks more powerfully than he does.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
I agree bo_Xos:

No question, teleprompter or not, Obama's the better speaker.

But what's hurting Romney even more right now--

Ann Romney, Chris Christie, Clint Eastwood and Marco Rubio all already had either more memorable or more poignant and powerful speeches.

He seems completely bland and flat by contrast...it'd be like hearing Lyndon Johnson speak after hearing JFK speak.

JFK--a GREAT orator.
LBJ--not so much. Competent, but no JFK.
Putin33 (111 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
"Rubii's speech was WAY too poignant..."

Do you even know what poignant means?
Putin33 (111 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
Chris Christie's speech was not powerful, memorable or 'poignant'. It was narcissistic and stupid.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
^Yes it was--but for his base, it was powerful.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Aug 12 UTC
Chris Christie mentioned himself what, 40 times, and muttered bacon about 800 times, but he had a decent speech. Rubio was not a tear jerker or anything but it was a pretty memorable speech as well. Clint Eastwood was hilarious without a doubt, no matter which party you may follow. Romney though was just kind of flat and I don't see what was so special about it. This was, as a number of sites quoted, the speech of his life, and he's not coming through right now. I'm interested in hearing Obama next week to see how they truly compare.

I don't get why people think JFK's monotone Massachusetts accent was 'great oratory'. The Nixon comparison is a bad one. People who listened to the Nixon-JFK debate on the radio thought Nixon won. People who watched it on tv saw Nixon all nervous & sweating, so they thought JFK won.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
"I don't get why people think JFK's monotone Massachusetts accent was 'great oratory'."

1. I disagree it was monotone,
2. He had a lot of youthful energy behind that voice and how he spoke, and
3. He had some GREAT lines that he delivered brilliantly
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
This isn't the speech Romney needed--

He's come off as completely Right-wing and stiff, I think that'll backfire.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Aug 12 UTC
Putin, the Nixon/JFK debate was the first one that was televised. The television is what made the difference. If it were on the radio, it may have turned out different, but hey, it wasn't. Just so happens that one is dead for being a good President and another committed one of the worst scandals in our nation's history.
Putin33 (111 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
Ugh, that wasn't my point. The point was about 'great oratory'. I wish people would read.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Aug 12 UTC
If this were grammar class, I'd say that your main point is your second sentence, supported by the next two, and that the first sentence was an outlier. Should make your point better if you want to make it your point at all.
Putin33 (111 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
Or the main point was the first sentence, with the example given of JFK losing among radio listeners. Grammar pedantry fail.

I assume you mean composition, bo_sox, not grammar?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

Anyway, back to speeches of Rubio and Romney...

I'd be curious how our friends across the pond feel about that speech.

He seemed very condescending towards other nations, as if every nation in the world wanted, and indeed should feel a need to bend over backwards and worship America as a Savior Nation.

You need a certain amount of flag-waving blind patriotism in any political speech, but still, did anyone else feel he really went a bit overboard there?
Putin33 (111 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
I think the world collectively yawns at Republican frat boy chest thumping.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

In redneckville - AKA where I live - syntax, comp, grammar, and pretty much anything else with words in it go together. They teach it together. People around here aren't writers. That's why I'm going to end up making minimum wage and struggle to survive someday, but hey, that's okay.

If I may segue back to the original point, screw Nixon… Romney's speech did nothing in comparison to the others, which weren't perfect either. If Obama can wow a crowd and his supporters can back him up correctly, he can win the election next week. That's all that really matters here.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
What's more, he waited for a LONG time to actually give his own IDEAS.

Most was that flag-waving blind patriotism, an attempt to connect, or else chastising Obama.

He gave a "5 point plan" in about 2 minutes, and that was really nothing of substance, it was little more than "I have a plan, I have 5 D in my plan, these are broad, vague points within my plan, OK, anyway, so as I was saying" and then back to the rest.

It didn't feel special to Romney, either.

Obama AND McCain in 2008 gave speeches that felt unique and special to them; liberal/conservative in style, obviously, and in content, but still, there was a sense that they were (and that their speeches were) something different.

Obama's in particular; that was arguably one of his best and most defining speeches.

Romney's sounded like warmed-over Republican mantras--which works to shore up the base, and I think he was VERY successful at shoring up his Republican base tonight.

Winning over undecideds, though, far less so.

What's worse for Romney--

Obama will have his chance at his convention in a week to respond, and then Presidential Debates to follow, and all, Left AND Right, agree Obama's a far more powerful and dynamic speaker...

Romney might have gotten his base together, but may have missed his chance to win over undecideds with memorable phrases and powerful ideas and rhetoric, and powerful rhetoric, at least (if you don't like his ideas, as I like most of them, but in any case) CAN win those undecided voters.

Romney didn't stumble here, but he didn't perhaps start to pick of speed and momentum with the groups and in the way he needed to, not helped by the fact Rubio gave a much better speech before him.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Aug 12 UTC
Also, a little gem from tonight:

"Why should women have any less say than men about the great decisions facing this nation?" --Romney

...You mean except for the great decision facing their right to choose, right?

Gunboating as Italy
Is there anything to be done? I'm just coming off of my second gunboat in a row being assigned Italy, and I'm finding that Italy's already-weak position in a standard-press game quickly turns disastrous without the ability to negotiate with potential allies.

Is there any way to help this situation? Anyone with experience winning, or at least getting a strong draw with Italy?

For Once, I Have Sympathy For...Ron Paul?
http://news.yahoo.com/gop-convention-floor-fight-averted-005806537--abc-news-politics.html I dislike Paul. I don't like his politics, and I'm iffy on his character. Even still, threatening to silence those at the GOP National Convention who would cast delegate votes for him instead of Romney...if your ticket is so weak you can only foster party unity by silencing part of your party, what does it say about the strength and quality of that ticket?
