oh what are the rules about dropping out? i won a league game last season, but i might not have time this season, unless we start right before christmas when winter break starts. is there a pause? where whenever i come back, i start off where i left?

With the old setup, missing a season was treated as if you had been demoted for that season. For example, if you were in the B league and did well and would have been promoted to A the next season but then could not play, you would then be demoted from A to B and would pick up in B the third season. If you still couldn't play then you would drop from B to C for the fourth season. With the new format there are less levels and more movement so it might not matter so much.

From the previous page you were scheduled to be in the new B league. If you can't play this season then maybe next season you'd be in the Open league below that, but might make it back into B based on needing to fill in spots due to other dropouts.

Note, I'm not in charge, just stating how I think it would work.

@idealist - Alderian pointed out how it used to work, but as was said, we now have 4 levels and one of those basically has no repeats, so I'm open to suggestions. Do we still assume a demotion upon missing a season? With the new double promotion for asn outright win, you could still rapidly hit the top. Or do we say "you snooze you lose" and not let anyone reenter above Open leagues. I don't see how we could let reentry in A which gets fully mixed every season so maybe we could set the reentry limit to B if you would have been in A or Premiere the season you missed, otherwise you are in Open Leagues.

Draug, the 11 demotion from Primiere seems extremely sever. what is the benefit of such heavy-handedness?

Also a few questions... what is your goal for the league start? will you go with the "two weeks apart" plan or 2 at a time, but a month apart plan that was proposed? What is the last day you will need your confirmations etc by?

I have not yet decided if I want to play this season, the non-anon nature of the leagues has left quite a bitter taste in my mouth that may be too much to bear despite the fact that there are some great players in the P league I'm interested in playing.

also - one suggestion if I may. make the 'open' leagues 7 in each not 14... so its really like the minor leagues with 3 moving up to B from each minor league and B leaguers moving down to minor leagues if they dont do well etc. you can still have your "Top Open league performer" go up to A or premiere if you wanted.

Also - I'd recommend that the B league be the one that gets emptied out not the A League... unless you WANT a lot of top-player drop-outs and turn-over every year. but again, that's just a suggestion.

Looking at this list of players and the list of top GR active players, you'll note that there is not a lot of overlap... why? over the past 3 seasons, a lot of the top performers of the site have dropped the leagues altogether... i'd suggest it might not be a bad idea to ask them why and consider if that is something we would WANT to change.

anyways... thank you both for taking on the difficult responsibility of running this league and I'll get back to you via email if I decide to stay in or drop out. I'm very curious to hear what TheWizard, abgemacht, Malleus, Laoban, and Lan Gaiden intend to do as well.

My question would be the same as Babak's. Why relegate such a large volume of people from the Premier; it seems to be potentially over-rewarding those who may not be playing against tougher competition while over-penalizing those that are playing stronger opponents.

I also empathize w/ one other thing Babak mentioned. The non-anon nature of the leagues. Granted, some of the issues w/ playing the same 6 people over the 4 games would be assuaged by incorporating the variables of playing random opponents over the 4 games, but it's that non-anon nature that creates some inherent meta-gaming. This does change the way people play the games - and can cause some contentious situations.

I'm admittedly torn about whether to play this league season or not; as I really need to be sure I can put my best foot forward. Can I ask if there is any thought to making it anonymous - in order to truly allow the best players (in the tourney) to do their magic w/o being singled out as "leaders" the second their game starts?

Isn't that the natural nature of Diplomacy games in real life though? When you play with the same regular group of players - because let's face it, it's not like it is common to play real life games with constantly changing groups of people - you learn about each other and it is never going to be anonymous or 'fresh' in the false way making the Leagues anonymous would, surely?

How long does a season of the league normally last?

Everything except non-anon is up for consideration. But we have enough anon tournaments and every TD of the leagues to date has wanted to keep them non-anon and orathaic and I are no exception.

@Yonni, unless i'm mistaken, seasons were about 4-5 months in the past.

Which meant two seasons per year; that said, the last league was winter 2011 and no time was left to run one in summer 2011 as it has been slipping a bit.

I would hope to keep things down to 5 months at the longest.

How were the rankings for the B leagues determined? I know in my league I was tied with the most points but in the list for players in the B league people in my games were slotted above me....
