Question: Is the "Republic vs. Democracy" thing just an American thing?
I've heard Americans talk about how "America is a republic not a democracy". Using the standard definitions of those words it doesn't make any sense, however if you use the ridiculous definitions those people come up with than it is true. Does anyone outside of the US use this ridiculous dichotomy or is it just Americans?

We wanted Trump for a reason. He is a street fighter thus he is the reason why he won the primary.

I feel like he won the primary because the GOP base wants insult-driven drama and lulz via a reality TV-like theatre more than they want policy-driven discussion or rational discourse.

Trump won the primary because he identified groups of people unhappy with the current direction of the country--rural voters sick of being the acceptable targets of progressive elites, blue-collar workers feeling hopeless about the disappearance of manufacturing jobs and other well-paying jobs that don't need a college degree, well-off white guys feeling culturally threatened by immigration--and he locked in their votes with laser-guided pandering bullshit.

Elect Trump to get back at all those namby-pamby liberals who think they're so much better than us because they eat 'organic' and identify as pansexual giraffes and stomp all over us 'cause they care more about the endangered whosawhatsit than people's livelihoods.

Elect Trump to singlehandedly stop the world from getting hot, flat, and crowded.

Elect Trump to show those illegals what-for, because they're goddamn cheaters who should've come in the right way, and our own fucking party's happy to let businesses fire us and hire them.

Elect Trump because he beats the politicians at their own dirty games. He's a winner and he'll clean up the system so America can start winning again, instead of fighting with one hand tied behind our back like we've done ever since Korea, because fucking liberals like Clinton would rather line their own pockets with globalist money than fight for Americans.

Elect Trump because he won't let some priggish progressive moralizing get in the way of him saying whatever he wants, and he won't let it get in the way of making America great again, either.

Trump baited his promises with just enough emotional truth to build a base of true believers willing to overlook that he's a cruel, impotent, ignorant bullshitter who can't give them what they want and will probably wreck the country if he tries. Oh, and the media helpfully spread this message for Trump with billions in free advertising because the stuff he was saying seemed so fucking outlandish to them.

And then Trump ran roughshod over an incompetent, disorganized, unserious GOP primary field by virtue of having this untouchable base.

That's not a street fight. It's a con job. And while the con man is discovering that the scope of his con is limited, that he got this far speaks volumes about the depth of the emotions he manipulated. Trump won the primary because America is broken and he promises to be the fix-it man, even though he's got nothing but spit, duct tape, and dynamite.

Those election results in full:

Robert Courts (Con) - 17,313 (45.02%)
Liz Leffman (Lib Dem) - 11,611 (30.19%)
Duncan Enright (Lab) - 5,765 (14.99%)
Larry Sanders (Green) - 1,363 (3.54%)
Dickie Bird (UKIP) - 1,354 (3.52%)
Dr Helen Salisbury (NHAP) - 433 (1.13%)
Daniel Skidmore (Ind) - 151 (0.39%)
Mad Hatter (Loony) - 129 (0.34%)
Nicholas Ward (Ind) - 93 (0.24%)
David Bishop (Bus Pass Elvis) - 61 (0.16%)
Lord Toby Jug (Eccentric) - 59 (0.15%)
Winston McKenzie (Eng Dem) - 52 (0.14%)
Emilia Arno (Love) - 44 (0.11%)
Adam Knight (Ind) - 27 (0.07%)
Turnout - 46.74%

An impressive achievement for Labour, as not many opposition parties manage to actually lose vote share in a by-election. The Lib Dems are rising from the ashes and may be a genuine force again. Disappointing night for the Bus Pass Elvis Party :(

@Octavious, my only surprise is that Iteland hasn't needed to call a second general election. We've had a minority government for months now, but there was a chance we'd pull off two elections in less time (and cost) than it took the US to pull off one.

@ND, you said "-loss of American prestige in the world"

I'd just like to re-iterate this point. As someone who actually lives in the rest of the world. Obama is seen as a messiah-like figure and held in rather high esteem. (Rather unrealistic, but its is true, he even won a Nobel peace prize while expanding nuclear stockpiles)

Trump is seen as a reality TV star and a joke, there is nothing you could to reduce American orestige in the world worse than electing him.

He may be seen as a joke, but electing him will make your entire country one.

How you self-assess what other people think of you is the issue here. You seem to think that other countries need to see 'America Fuck Yeah!' So that your country is taken seriously. (Correct me if i'm putting words in your mouth) When in reality that attitude is largely denigrated across the world 'America Fuck Yeah' reminds europeans of cowboys who arrived at the last moment to help win two world wars. This is not complimentary... It is like, we did all the hard lifting to loosen the jar, and you opened it and claimed victory.

It does not remind us of the moon landing. (I might think that was a wasteful military exercise but the world sees it as the greatest achievement of mankind) What is Obama's legacy? I believe he will be remembered fondly regardless of which candidate you elect.
Ogion (3882 D)
21 Oct 16 UTC
@orthaic, I appreciate the dose of reality, but the poor reputation of the US is due in part to the fact that a great many Americans have never been more than five blocks from home and have precisely the attitude you describe. Trump's whole pitch is to return to a mindset when reality and the rest of the world didn't intrude. So, basically the disrespect of the rest of the world is well earned. If it weren't for immigrants and communities of color, the US would be a cesspit by now. First we elect Bush II, and now have come perilously close to electing Il Douche. I wouldn't hold out much hope. The main hope is that these dingbats are old and will start dying off soon

Trump has resonated for a change in the political status quo. The corruption that lies at the to in both the political and business establishments is past criminal. The people are voting for change, that said, they could not have found a more morally decrepit person to take the task on. If that was Michael Bloomberg , Hillary would have already conceded

Bernie never had a chance against Clinton. The fix was always in. Talk about voter fraud. DNC only needs to look at itself.

I think Trip said earlier and he is quite correct" the RNC had 8 years to get someone to run against Clinton and this is what they got?"

On a technical note, Norbpth's model is essentially a fundamentals model based also in past voting patterns of alternation of parties in power. To a certain extent these are the factors that represent the difference between Silver's polls only and polls plus models with an added dose of "but parties never win third terms!" Thrown in. It's a woefully incomplete model and seems to be a classic case of predicting the data you condition the model on. And of course, a generic GOP candidate would have been a favorite this year (although with the sharply rebounding economy and Obama's high popularity, that'd be tempered some). However, Trump is a catastrophically terrible candidate so represents the kind of outlier that Norbeths model can't incorporate

So, when it comes to friends and family, one should only play password protected games with them. But what about people I am meeting at face to face games in clubs in my state? What about if I start getting involved in the tournament scene? How do the more experienced players on here handle it? At what point does it become inappropriate to play in public games with people you have met through the game?
