What kind of site to create?
I'm going to create a site for school, and ideally it's about something useful, ideally even potentially profitable, or at least breaking me even if I decide to actually get it hosted. Any idea's on what to make it about? Anyone wants a site made by me maybe? I'm just clueless.

First website I need is for a not-for-profit-company I'm helping out. They want to promote the equal funding of women's sport compared to men's sport. They want to gain supporters initially. They will they try to organise a boycott (or a girlcott) of a major sponsor of a football club as a way of highlighting the inequallity of funding. Site will also tie into a poster campaign. The site will need to be informative about the difference between women's and men's funding and need a sign up to support function and an email link. Fairly basic, I would imagine. All images can be from free stock sites such as flickr but it is essential that sporting pics are 'real' not some airbrushed models. It will be a live site so hosting for a year?
If you can handle this please give me a quote and I'll run it past my people.
Maniac (189 D(B))

I also have a second site that will need building in a month or two.

Also your English is fine, but we will, of course proof read it anyway before launch.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Nov 13 UTC
I think I can handle that first job, but what's the deadline? I know all you say is possible and I think I can do it given the time, but I do still have a bit of a learning curve myself. And I basically fear I might be letting you down if I can't pull it off. I'd hate that.

Also, I won't be hosting it myself, but if you'd rather have me finding someone to host it than you, that's fine by me I suppose, although I'm new to most of this. I'm actually already looking for people who would be willing to host, just so I can say: 'Host it too? Sure, I can do that.' But for now I have nothing yet

What's the second site going to be about?

And right now I'm rather busy, so I'll probably be back tomorrow.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Nov 13 UTC
And of course I still have to check with the teacher once we've figured out a bunch of the details, although I really don't expect any issues with him, he's a nice guy and he's probably happy I make good use of the skills he teached me and such...
Maniac (189 D(B))
26 Nov 13 UTC
Deadline will be about 1 month. If you could sort hosting that would be cool.

2nd site is about finance but is really just an infomation and link to Facebook

still need idea on cost?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
26 Nov 13 UTC
@Steephie, have you built a site before? Also what language(s) are you using. Do you need to have a database back end or is it all html front end? If you need a database do you know php, if not what language? Are you using html, or html5, does it need to be compatible with all browsers or one in specific. How about javascript, is it allowed? Can you use a helper program like dreamweaver or any other template html builder? Will you need custom CSS pages?

You need to answer all those before you can tell Maniac or anyone else if you can do their project, or how much time it will take.

Once you answer those I think we can give you a lot better recommendations on what would be a good project for the specific requirements.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Nov 13 UTC
Are you asking me if I need idea on cost or are you asking my idea on cost?

I'll assume the last case for now.

In all honesty, I don't know what a fair price would be. Anyone knows? I'll just run some sort-of random numbers I suppose...

I can probably work on it under school time approximately 3 hours a week, for a month, so a bit more than 12 hours... If we say, like, £8 per hour because I'm no professional (don't know what professionals earn from one site really but anyway...) 8*12=£96? So that's not counting any hours I may spend on it next to school, I don't know about that either, maybe 0, maybe a bunch...

Does £96 excluding hosting (don't know cost on that, but if I had to guess about £10 per month? I'm asking Draugnar already actually) sound fair? I honestly don't know. I don't want to rip you off and I would like to make a bit of money too, and I know I'm definitely not the best programmer (right word?) you can get, although I might be the cheapest but I again don't know... It's also for a charity I understand...

And in even more honesty, I can't absolutely guarantee you I will meet up to your demands, although I wouldn't really know why not yet, except that I haven't exactly done what you're suggesting yet.

Like I said, those numbers are kinda random and if someone knows what a pro earns on this kind of site, please tell. I'll give it a fresh look tomorrow.

For now, no promises made, I hope we can work something out and I hope you like the result, but I still need to check several things including if my teacher minds, which I'll probably know thursday. If we can work everything out before then, I can get started that hour, although no big deal if not.

In my experience, people don't charge for making sites until they have a portfolio to show they know what they're doing.

Most people looking for a site for some basic function, if they are buying the name and hosting it can get free software with templates, etc to run their blog or whatever it is they want.

Answering jmo's questions (thanks for thinking with us here): yes, I have built a site before, but I never hosted one or got one hosted and it wasn't too much stuff I did with that first site, several years ago. I've learned a lot I think since then though.

I mostly know and need to use CSS and html5 although html is ok too I think.
Javascript is allowed I think (pretty sure) but I don't know too much 'tricks' with it. I'm not sure about helper programs, for now I'll go with no.

Custom CSS pages are not needed, but almost certainly allowed although it's been a long while since I used a separate page for CSS (if that's what you mean) but that shouldn't cause problems... Should it?

Oh, and I will try to make it as compatible as possible although I don't know if it's necessary.

So what do you think jmo? Is Maniac's project too much?
Maniac (189 D(B))
26 Nov 13 UTC
Steephie - dont worry about letting me down. I can make a website myself (using a template site like webplus) if I had the time, so if you don't perform I will do it myself.

Budget costs seem very reasonable. I'll run it by my people tomorrow and get back to you.

@steephie, Well that depends on exactly what he wants. Right now I would start requirement gathering from Maniac. For example:

Please have your clients give me 3-5 sites similar to what they are looking for design wise, and functionality wise.
Do you need a log-in/registration system?
Do you need any database support?
How much traffic are you expecting for this site, since hosting depends heavily for this.
What basic functionality is abolsutly required vs. extras that I should add in once the framework is functioning.
Will there be needed ongoing support or is this a one time and done project?
Will there be any copyrighted material being used or needed?
What are your security concerns for the site?
What browsers does it need to work on?

I would never take on a project without knowing the answers to most of those question. Krellin, abge, and Draugnar along with anyone else who's coded before can probably think of a few more questions or revise mine. From everything I've experienced building sites though, 12 hours will not be enough to create anything but the most simplistic site, especially if cross browser functionality or database work is required.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
27 Nov 13 UTC
@Maniac: care to answer jmo's questions? I think he's on to something here :)
It's a big relief that I don't have to worry about letting you down.

The 12 hours I don't really know; I was thinking that payment would be especially for any time spent on it next to school (so anything more than 12 hours), since, in all honesty, I don't feel like continuing if there's nothing in it for me. Of course, I still need my mark, but without payment it's just another school-project for me, which I usually do little with until the last day...

We'll hold for a moment Steepie - find out if your project allows you to use a template site or if you are coding from scratch.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
27 Nov 13 UTC
I am fairly certain I'm coding from scratch. Basically, what I'm planning to do is just add stuff to the style and body, mainly HTML and CSS.

If I get a clear priority list I can just work down that list and the neccessities like a sign-up function, which could basically be an application form (right word?) with answers sent to a dedicated email if that will do, and then basic information including links to emails and social media maybe.

Those basics would be priority, then I can work on making it all more fancy, compatible (for mobile and different browsers) and expansive. I don't know how far I'll get with that, but I expect I can deliver a rather neat site...

But if those basics I mentioned as first priority work for you as an absolute minimum, I think I won't dissappoint you.

Does that sound like an unreasonable or unreachable statement to anyone? Just to be sure: you can pay on delivery Maniac :)

Basically, right now, all I can ask my teacher is if it's cool to make such a site, to which I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, and if I can use helper programs, but I'm not sure if I even want to do that.

Sent from mobile.

27 Nov 13 UTC
If anyone thinks I'm being way too ambitious here, feel free to say so, and preferably tell me why. If you think it can be done reasonably well by me, feel free to say so as well. I'd just like to hear if people think this is some nutty idea in my head or something I can actually do without too big trouble.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
28 Nov 13 UTC
I just got a green light from my teacher and he seems very willing to help. I'm using phpDesigner and I can look everything I don't know up, obviously...

So basically, with a clear plan I should be able to make it all work.

Do you like what I mentioned earlier as a priority list and such Maniac?

And the more details on how it has to look and work, the less I have to worry about design, so just tell me what you want and in what order I suppose, and I'll check with my teacher, just to be sure, and then I can go for it I suppose...

And again: more details is better.

Sound good?
Maniac (189 D(B))
28 Nov 13 UTC
Sounds good, I'll discuss details and cash with people who matter and get back to you
steephie22 (182 D(S))
28 Nov 13 UTC
Great. I'll give you my email via PM and I suggest you give me yours, webDiplomacy has a bunch of issues lately and I'd like to have a 'backup' system to reach you. Besides, it could be useful to send files for you to have a peek and such, and not bother webDip with this project any more :)

If someone has something to say feel free to do so though, especially if we're missing something here or something like that.

For now, the only urgent questions I have are:
What is the name of the organisation?
Will the system I mentioned earlier, of filled in forms being forwarded to a dedicated email account do, so I don't have to worry about auto-saving data but just auto-forwarding it? I'm not sure what is going to be the easiest way, but then I know I actually have the choice. In the end, if I have the time, I will implement the best system or maybe a 'double' system, both saving data and forwarding it automatically. I'd like to hear which way, if any, is preferred, too. Maybe you rather just want (or accept) an email link and a form to be copied and pasted and filled and then sent 'manually', meaning all that needs to be on the site are links and info. I think I might do that first so you have a basic system to fall back on if everything else fails. Then I can work on making it more automatic and professional looking.
Then I'd also like to know if you want people to be able to leave comments on the site, and if you want them to sign up/sign in for that first, so basically have an account to post comments with and maybe other stuff (this is something I can't guarantee and is probably a lot of work, but I'm asking anyway)?

So a long story short, the actual questions. In almost all cases I'd like to know how neccessary you consider them and if you even like the idea of it or would rather not have it at all:
What is the name of the organisation?
What do you think of the forwarding system (submitted data sent to dedicated email)?
What do you think of the 'manual' system (email link and form to be copied and pasted)?
What do you think of the submitted data being saved on the site itself (this might be rather unsecure but I'm not sure yet, will tell when I know)?
What do you think of leaving comments on the site?
What do you think of having accounts and everything that comes with it (outlined a bit above, feel free to ask)?
How important is making it compatible with mobile phones and different browsers to you?

That's all the important things I can think of to get me going for a while.
You can answer here, but maybe it's better to communicate with email from now on, since it's getting a bit more personal now, but your call. I post these questions here so people can comment, maybe giving me idea's on other important questions. If you have no answer for some questions no problem, just give the ones you have when you have them. More answers is better.

Giving you my e-mail in PM now.

Ah, interesting design bug you caught there kasimax. It's not actually jumping to the wrong one, it's jumping to the right one but the header is overlapping the content at the top of the page where the scroll content of the clicked question link would send you, and consequently making it seem like it jumped to the next one being the first one you can see.

I don't mind you using my thread for this purpose, but I have to create a site myself, not improve an excisting site.
