to admin: orders glitch
Hello, in 'This is why I have no money' -- I (Turkey) ordered 2 retreats; RUM to Bulgaria; BUD to Serbia, and the orders received were both to SERBIA, so both units were disbanded. Is this just something I have to deal with or is there any rectification?

How do I get the orders option to show up on a turn. Game says its in the retreat phase but I can't put orders in and the deadline keeps getting closer. Already missed 1 turn because of this.

Great map joke
I'm currently playing on the "Fall of the American Empire" map for the first time, and I love that the Bermuda Triangle is shaped like a triangle. It's also fun that so many of the US states retain their actual shapes. Well done, Mous and Jensen.

You're not paying attention. The part that should be clear and easy, seeing where the pieces are on the map and who they belong to, is on playdip and is not on webdip (for those that mentioned color issues, there's an option to turn on a hover feature, that shows who the unit in a given territory and which country a given territory belongs to by scrolling over it with the mouse--very useful for games like, say, Versailles).

Where you should have to know what you're doing, writing orders, playdip gives you freedom in the interface, whereas webdip forces you to enter a legal order. This removes what I understand is a legitimate strategy from the face to face game, which is mis-writing orders. If I want to support Smyrna to Iceland from Tyrolia, then I should be allowed to.

The Panda is pounding.

you'll be happy to learn that Mis-orders are still possible here, as I'm sure you'll find out the hard way sooner or later.

the rule book and face to face play allow and explain the consequences of Mis-orders, as it also does civil disorder. no reason to think one is more exalted than the other, & I don't think the rules or the creator particularly exalted civil disorder
Octavious (2701 D)
11 Apr 15 UTC
I don't understand how it's not clear whose piece is what... The piece has the colours of its owner in a blatantly obvious square behind it, unless you are in a territory you happen to own. I guess if our Eskimo guest has been permanently fighting a rearguard action in his homeland he will not have noticed this. If you're still struggling, you could always check the orders.
Nescio (1059 D)
11 Apr 15 UTC
Nanook, you're right, webdip only accepts legal orders. Per the official rules it is possible to submit illegal orders, which count as holds. Misorders, no orders, and holds are possible on webdip.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with your "playdip gives you freedom in the interface" claim. What freedom? You can write down "Timbuktu supports Hong Kong to the Moon", or submit "2+2=5" in a face-to-face game. As far as I know this is impossible on PlayDip (correct me if I'm wrong).
Any interface which doesn't accept handwritten orders severly limits illegal orders. Therefore PlayDip's interface isn't intrinsically better than webdip's.
Nescio (1059 D)
11 Apr 15 UTC
By the way, if the map is unclear to you, you could always scroll down, and click to open the "Orders" archive, which clearly lists all orders, moves, and units.
Nanook (100 D)
11 Apr 15 UTC
A mis-order is not the same as an illegal order. I understand mis-orders can still happen, that is not what I am talking about.

Perhaps the square is blatantly obvious to your eyes, to mine it blends in to the background commonly. Perhaps I am alone in that one however. Just like I could be alone in my desire to not have to scroll through the orders to figure out whose piece is in what territory, since ya know, that's what the map is for. I could be the only one who wants to be able to use the map for it's intended purpose. I could be.

(for the record, this will in no way impede me from beating you all ;)

(also, I don't hate your site, it's just my competitive juices flowing)

(and I'm going to own your site shortly, so look forward to that)

From my short time over here, I have come to the conclusion that its really a matter of horses for courses! There is no doubt that both playdip and webdip have their own active forum peeps and a range of good/awful players.

For me its encouraging that we are engaging in this cross site dialogue and learn different things from each others sites.

I think it would be helpful if we earnestly collected feedback from the non-WebDippers after the tournament. They might have some good insight on features we could do differently or things we do particularly well.

I would much rather begrudgingly collect said feedback, but aside from that very much agree.
Nescio (1059 D)
13 Apr 15 UTC
Since you've been asking for feedback, here's a little :)

Features implemented on vDip, but not on webDip:

Advanced settings:
- choice between "Start as soon as enough players have joined" and "Wait for the given starting time and day."
- reliability rating requirements
- NMR policy
- alternative winning conditions
- moderated game feature
- do not process game on certain days of the week
- random country assignment (default), or pick your country
- unrated games

Other things:
- ranking is not based on webDip points (bet size); position depends on vDip score, which is independent from bet size: if you win a game against higher ranked players, you'll gain more points than if you defeat weaker opponents; and if you draw with better players, your score increases, but if you draw with lower ranked players, your score could drop
- new player restrictions ( http://vdiplomacy.com/reliability.php )
- country switch (to allow a different player to play for you)
- sort units
- color vision deficiency settings
- interactive map
- in-game "extend" and "concede" votes
- if you advertise an anonymous game by posting the link on the forum, the post is anonymous as well

I've probably forgotten to mention several things. Most of these points are of relatively minor importance, though
Things I'd really like to see implemented here:

- Automatically cancel games immediately if a NMR occurs in the first turn
- Make it possible by default to send anonymous press
Bump to first page.

I find F2F the epitome of that. A combination of the Live Time Pressure aspect, but also physically interacting/seeing the other person. If someone does something stupid or isn't talking to me in a live game on webDip, I have to just chalk it up to either bad internet, stupidity, apathy, etc. But in a F2F game I can figure out the, for the engineers on the site, failure mode (only talking to a select few, not confident enough, not knowledgeable enough, overwhelmed, old-school player, just here for giggles and beer, etc) and that gives me the opportunity to change how I approach things. It's near impossible to find the failure mode through a screen compared to F2F.

I think the interface is a little clumsy, but then so are the players. (I know. I should talk.)
Can you explain 'clumsy'?
And perhaps also what you think would be less clumsy?
zaneparks (102 D(B))
18 Apr 15 UTC
It is a terrible thing to take someone seriously when they are trying to be funny and you should be ashamed of yourself, Minister. In truth, the interface is not so much clumsy as awkward, awkward in the way anything new and unfamiliar is. There are probably things to be learned on both sides, WebDip and PlayDip, but Nanook and I are partisan and more interested in laughter than truth.

@zaneparks:

I know you're unfamiliar with our customs here on webdip, but we hold a delicate balance on this site.

We keep troll populations low, yet above extinction. We also use vigilante justice. Offenders at this site are sent to the Congo, and, I'm pretty sure you don't know $h!t about the Congo.

These truths are implied, and so are not found on the site rules page.
