to admin: orders glitch
Hello, in 'This is why I have no money' -- I (Turkey) ordered 2 retreats; RUM to Bulgaria; BUD to Serbia, and the orders received were both to SERBIA, so both units were disbanded. Is this just something I have to deal with or is there any rectification?

New forum series: "Where did I go wrong?"

Too experienced for the School of War? Or maybe you just don't have the time? Have you had one of those games where you felt like you did everything right, but got killed or soloed on anyway? This series is for you!

Presenting "Where did I go wrong??", the forum series where we take an anonymised, finished game that went badly for a particular player (submitted by the player in question), and examine it SoW style.

Here's how it works:

We'll post one game at a time (anonymised - maps only) in the forum. Games might be accompanied by a question from the submitter, or they might not if there wasn't one. There will be a couple of official commentators to kick things off with a bit of commentary SoW prof style about where the game went south, but commentary and discussion is welcome from all members. You can't affect the outcome of a finished game!

Submissions for games are to be made with the gameID either via PM to me, or via email to [email protected] with the subject line "Where did I go wrong submission". Feel free to include detail or a question (eg "I thought this alliance with France was going so well, but as we progressed I just found myself in a more and more vulnerable position until his eventual stab- how could I have stayed allied but not so vulnerable?" - or "how was Austria able to solo so easily from what looked like a terrible position in 1905" or simply "This game didn't go well. Help."). You're also welcome to include any extra information that relates to your question - but keep in mind it will all be posted in the forum. Of course, please submit your own games only.

We're also looking for commentators! PM or post here if you're interested in being an official commentator. This is a commitment to kick the discussion off with an answer to "where did it all go wrong". Ideally you would be an experienced player, or an active forum member, or both! Also ideally you would not be commentating in the current SoW games (although if you really want to, I'm not going to stop you). The main difference between official commentators and members in this series are (1) bragging rights, and (2) you've promised to write something.

(if we get no volunteers for official commentators, I'll assume there probably won't be any UNofficial commentators, and so the series won't run)

Submissions of games welcome from all players of all skill levels. I hope this series will produce some interesting discussion!

Great idea ATC! I'm excited for this. The heavy time commitment, in both duration and intensity/frequency of the SOW doesn't lend itself to many situations or peoples as would be ideal, and I think this will be a most complementary institution.

Good idea but out of curiosity: why anonymised? SOW isn't anonymised.

Just curious, I don't really care myself.

Partly to switch things up, partly to reduce possibility for bias in the commentary (we might have some games with really well known players in them), and partly because the games will be sent in by only one of the players in the games.

This sounds like an awesome idea for a great learning ability. I guess I'm too new here to know what the SoW is but I'm definitely excited to see what others post here as well as perhaps give my own version of where I think things went wrong in the given game of question.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

MageMaker: The SoW (School of War) is a series that runs around twice a year (depending on signups, interest, and when the last one finished). New players are paired with experienced players who act as a kind of advisor/teaching assistant. The new players play the game, while their paired experienced players discuss strategy, tactics and press with them.

Then, each phase, commentary is posted in the forum on how the board is looking, by top level players acting as "Professors". They comment on the board, but have no access to press.

Participating and following the SoW is a great way for newer players to learn (there's currently two SoW's running - the main one, and a "study group" where players aren't paired with advisors/TAs - there's only commentary).

The SoW is typically aimed at less experienced players - I'm hoping this series will attract submissions from all levels of player.

Keep those game submissions coming, people! Need a couple more before we can make this a reality.

I'd highly encourage you to catch up with the current SoW as linked by Valis and follow along in real time. I happen to know the current Professor. He's very good and quite handsome.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
28 Apr 15 UTC
I'm more than happy to provide comments on games, although are we looking for all forms of commentary?

The drawback to the SoW and being a prof is that it's easy to get things wrong when we don't know the press behind a situation. Press can turn a lousy set of moves into a series of sound decisions, in many cases.

Will people provide details on what happened with various games?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
28 Apr 15 UTC
i think the lack of people posting game (as your submission rules require) leads to people not seeing anything happening.

Would you like to get the ball rolling with the first submission?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
28 Apr 15 UTC
Or maybe announce the commentors? That might encourage people to post games.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
28 Apr 15 UTC
I assume this was a recruitment thread, I'll call for commentators in a call for a game submissions, I didn't expect it to happen right away I think. but I'm also very silly sometimes

Did you have a stroke while writing that sentence?
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
28 Apr 15 UTC
I assume this was a recruitment thread, it would call for commentators and it would call for game submissions. The actual series would start with a new thread once the first game submission has been accepted and the group of commentators had been finalized. this is how I imagined it working or how I would run it, however I acknowledge that such an assumption on my part may be false since I often deviate inrational from others.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Oh yes, I'm sure the commentary will be in a discrete thread. I was just wondering if announcing the commentators would encourage more people to submit games to be analyzed.
MageMaker (100 D)

These are classic games or are you accepting variants too?
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

As a commentator, I can and will only commentate on Classic, Gunboat Classic, and Public Press Classic.

I'd be happy to see some variant specialists come out of the woodworks though! (So we can send them to Vdip)
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

orathaic (1009 D(B))

Just thought i'd mention - i love the fact that this idea encourages discussion of mid/ end game scenarios, rather than just opening game - which is much easier to discuss and thus much more widely known.
thorfi (1023 D)
05 May 15 UTC
Steephie: Err, the commonly used strategies? No doubt, even back then stuff went in and out of fashion over the years. The game has changed? Not really. Or were you meaning something more subtle that I've missed?
