to admin: orders glitch
Hello, in 'This is why I have no money' -- I (Turkey) ordered 2 retreats; RUM to Bulgaria; BUD to Serbia, and the orders received were both to SERBIA, so both units were disbanded. Is this just something I have to deal with or is there any rectification?

How do I get the orders option to show up on a turn. Game says its in the retreat phase but I can't put orders in and the deadline keeps getting closer. Already missed 1 turn because of this.

Western Triangle vs Eastern Square?
Lets talk about Strategy...

I'm mostly going to reject the notion of two separate areas of conflict, and instead focus on four overlapping areas.

Great map joke
I'm currently playing on the "Fall of the American Empire" map for the first time, and I love that the Bermuda Triangle is shaped like a triangle. It's also fun that so many of the US states retain their actual shapes. Well done, Mous and Jensen.

Maybe you should spend more time joining your game and less time getting banned then.

....there's a qualifying round? Guess I'll have to actually read the rules to the tournament now.

I just saw "Cross-Site Challenge" and immediately knew I had to spread my mediocrity to other sites too. Needless to say, I did not read past that. Now I have to. Damn you all and your rules. Rules should be like rubber bands anyways, I've always believed--sure it's nice when they're working and you're shooting/flicking people in various uncomfortable places, but it's just as funny when they break.

Where was I?

Oh right, of course, my lack of reading comprehension! Good thing for a dip player to have, right? I've always assumed so, though I never really read the rules to the game or any kind of strategy guide or anything like that, so I wouldn't really know.

This has been your daily dose of my rambling. Hanley is coming for your babies (otherwise known as fastballs).

So far, I have to say I'm not a huge fan of your interface. The map, especially. I'm not here to rag on your site, I'm here to beat it's players into the ground with a dull club, but I cannot for the life of me differentiate between several of the countries colors, especially when it comes to units. This seems like it may become an issue for everyone else, when my armies and fleets are covering half the map, so I thought I would bring it to attention well ahead of time. You're welcome.

Xander cannot be stopped, the man is a dutch (I think, sort of) hits machine.

um... if you're referring to the world variant then yes it is a bit jumbled, but for classic it is just fine.
Try playing F2F. On the board I own it is honestly really hard. What does the map look like on other sites?
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))

Depends on the version you're using. The new board (with cardboard pieces) is impossible. Older boards, especially the wooden pieces and the 1976 version, are much easier. Metal is easy, but that board is too dark and makes it hard to differentiate.

@2WL: That board looks pretty good. The one I have is this one:
http://www.wizards.com/global/images/ah_prod_diplomacy_pic3_en.jpg

The cardboard pieces and the size of some territories makes life pretty difficult.
By the way, I would look up what the PlayDip map looks like, but it's blocked at work. Apparently it is categorized as "malicious outbound data".
Octavious (2701 D)

Sounds about right. Although so far the foreigners have been utterly indistinguishable from the natives. It's almost as if... they're human as well... :s
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))

Cardboard pieces are the worst. You can't tell France from Italy or England and Turkey is too dark to easily differentiate. In some of the earlier versions, France and Italy have the same problem, especially when France's pieces are a lighter blue and Italy is more of a blue/green.

PlayDip has a pretty good map, although it's a little cartoonish. It looks easier to differentiate everyone than, say, Germany and Austria here, but I wonder if the similarity in color between Germany and neutrals makes it harder to follow. I really like the alternate unit markers.
ssorenn (0 DX)
10 Apr 15 UTC
Playdip, it's next to impossible to tell he color difference between the English and German units.

For comparison, the official board game uses the following colours: Austria: red, England: dark blue, France: light blue, Germany: black; Italy: green; Russia: white; Turkey: yellow.

Play Dip's colours:
http://www.playdiplomacy.com/game_play_details.php?game_id=100710

(And my variant colours: http://lab.vdiplomacy.com/variants/Europe1900/Europe1900.pdf )

I guess preferance depends on what you're used to. I don't think any colour scheme is intrinsically better than any other; most (non-colourblind) people should be able to become familiar with almost any colour scheme, provided the colours are clearly distinguishable. Visibility is important, most other things aren't.

There are various official board games. My copy, aside from Germany being black, matches this site.

Ghug, thanks for setting this all up, and super excited to play against some *real* competition (everyone over at PayDip is a mongrel, especially El_Conq...thank god gsmx didn't sign up, you WebDip guys would *really* hate him). Good luck all, hope to see some of you WD, VD and Bounced guys over at PayDip soon, and expect proper accolades when we bring home the Trophy!

Nanook (100 D)

Yeah, playdip expects you to, ya know, actually know what a legal order is. Unlike here, where any dummy could play...;)

As for color preferences, I don't care about that, it's just cluttered to my eyes. Cluttered and messy. Messy and confusing. Confusing and difficult to see. Difficult to see and at times indistinguishable. At times indistinguishable and cluttered to my eyes.

you know why everyone at playdip is a mongrel? Because we had to fight for every correctly entered order we enter, unlike the spoiled rotten, near-sighted from squinting at the map so often, webdippers. We're tough and gritty and do anything to win, including but not limited to gonads-kicking and shin-barking.

Either it's webDip is noob-easy to use or it's impossible to know what's going on in the map.
Either Paydip tests your skill or it has better usability...

Why do PlayDip's fleets have sails? In 1900, battleships were made of steel.

So. I have competed in several tournaments over the last few weeks, including League, 10-man and 5-man tournaments. Why aren't all tournament games automatically set to prevent NMRs and allowing swap outs so that the strategic balance is not upset?

Have you ever hear russian metal groups? For example, "Aria" (russ. "Ария"), "Epidemy" (russ. "Эпидемия"), "Black Obelisk" (russ. "Чёрный Обелиск"). If you have, what do you think about them? Has Russia presentable metal or no?
