For profit prisons?
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/13/681261/mississippi-schools-sending-kids-to-prison-for-misbehaving-in-the-classroom/?mobile=nc

When you put private companies in charge of prisons they make a profit, can you do the same with education and pay for it with public money? i mean prison is free for the user right? Why not run schools on this basis too??

Putn33 on Churchill: "Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One"...Fact or Fiction?
Putin, you're free to comment, freer to drop one of your clever cries of "jackass" or "doofus" below for my daring to disagree.
I don't think Churchill was "a Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One."
But maybe I'm wrong...am I? Have I missed a key memoir where Winston vows to expunge the Catholics or Jews or threatened to murder someone for saying the bar was empty or something? Or...is Putin being Putin?

Daily Bible Reading
Wherein the ancient story of God and man, heaven and hell, life and death, love and hate, sacrifice and murder, the fall and the rescue, and angels and demons, continues.

(This thread will replace the previous Daily Bible Reading threads, so let's continue the conversation in this one instead of the previous ones.)

Today's Bible reading is John Chapter 8, in which Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."

I have to ask again, Mujus...

HOW is Jesus overly-humble when he comes out saying "I'm the light of the world, and if you follow me, awesome things will happen thanks to just how awesome I am."

Again, I don't BLAME Jesus for having an ego--I think he actually existed and was just a charismatic Jew, and, hey, can't fault the guy for trying to get a following and make a name for himself back then--but...how is it you argue he doesn't have one?

Even if I called him somehow divine...well...

Again, God has QUITE an ego in the OT...so if we're refocusing the story from OT God to NT "God in Jesus," as it were--Son of God yet God in Human Form and all that jazz...which is a bit redundant when you consider that God said he made man in his own image, so, really, it's not so much "God in Human Form" so much as "God in God's Own Image" so yeah, a bit redundant, but anyway--and Jesus says things like this...

How does he not have an ego, how is this the sign of a humble person?

USUALLY someone who stands up and says "I am the Greatest Person on Earth!"...even if they ARE...

Well, in saying that, they're not being humble, are they?

I think like somebody said before, obiwan, it's not stuck-up if it's true. Like, imagine if you were a world-class doctor, and somebody came to you with a time machine and sent you back to 14th century Europe. And suppose you put up a big sign in the appropriate local language,

"I am the one person who can save you from the black plague! Come to me if you're sick, and don't go anywhere else!"

Would that be boastful or arrogant? No, it would just be a sober and accurate description of the situation.

People say Jesus is humble because of how He acted even though He WAS so awesome. He was as awesome and powerful as He said, and more, yet He did not seek political power or influence, He did not seek out the rich and the great -- He spent His time with the poorest of society, with children, and with a lot of His time spent helping them with their problems.

So now, imagine -- going back to the hypothetical -- that not only were you the only good doctor in Europe, but you were also the most talented person, and could easily be the richest if you would just serve the rich and charge them money; but instead you hung out with the poorest of the poor, serving them for free, sleeping outside because you had no money, trying to help them, and not talking down to them. Wouldn't you consider it fair to call you/that person humble, even if you also continued to point out that you were the best and only true doctor in Europe, and the one person to whom people should come for medical aid?

+ 2 Semck. Another way to think of it, Obi, is that God is light, and no darkness can exist in the presence of light. When someone gave up his place in the light and came into the darkness, bringing a glimmer of light with him, some believed their eyes or their hearts while others didn't. You can think of Jesus as a Noah's Ark for humans, a lifeboat, a bridge, a rescue, with a big sign out front: One Way In. :-)

@ Frazzled and others, following all of the religious laws perfectly was one way to be with God, but *no one* could do that, so the purpose of all that religious law was just to point out our need for outside help, predicted in Genesis as "the promised seed," and pictured in many other ways throughout the Old Testament.
Oh, OH. NOW it all makes sense.
Mujus (1495 D(B))

"following all of the religious laws perfectly was one way to be with God, but *no one* could do that, so the purpose of all that religious law was just to point out our need for outside help"

"For our ancestors won God’s approval by [faith]." Hebrews 11:2

"By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was approved as a righteous man, because God approved his gifts" Hebrews 11:4

So, religious law, which didn't exist at Abel's time, shows a need for outside help (according to Mutejus, that is Jesus). Yet, these old timers not only got into heaven without Jesus, Abel did it without knowledge (law) of needing outside help! What a guy!

What about prosperity christianity?

Also a friend of mine told me lately that he lost his faith when he realised that it just made sense to baptize babies and the murder them... Cause they'd go straight to heaven as they didn't have a chance to sin.

Which really suggests a solution for the pro-life movement.
King Atom (100 D)
30 Apr 12 UTC
Baptism does not save one's soul. Baptism is merely a symbolic gesture of accepting one's salvation, dying to self, and living anew for Christ. Baptizing babies does absolutely nothing. Among other things, this Catholic practice isn't even Biblical.
Just because some Christians do something one way doesn't mean it is a vital component of Christianity any more than it may simply be tradition.

Today's Bible reading is John Chapter 9, which ends as follows:
John 9:39 Then Jesus told him, "I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind."
40 Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked, "Are you saying we're blind?"
41 "If you were blind, you wouldn't be guilty," Jesus replied. "But you remain guilty because you claim you can see."

Replying to Sylence, from the other previous thread: You don't have to call yourself a Christian, which to many people carries cultural and historical connotations. I have friends who call themselves Jesus People, or Messianic Jews, but it does come down to Jesus' claims about himself. John 14:6: Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." NLT
Mujus (1495 D(B))
30 Apr 12 UTC
It's a totally inclusive faith, because anyone can come to Jesus by accepting his gift, no matter what his or her background is. There are no second-class Christians.
dubmdell (556 D)
30 Apr 12 UTC
A messianic Jew is a specific brand of Christianity. It is not a synonym anymore than baptist or Lutheran or catholic are synonyms. Please do not flaunt your ignorance, Mutejus. It's embarrassing you and insulting to those of us who have actual messianic Jews as friends.

Thank you, Mujus, for keeping your posts to one thread though I was surprised to learn that you muted me. I did not realize that I had used enough colorful language to be muted, but that's okay. Maybe it was something else I said. God knows that being reasonable isn't something that should be tolerated.

I do find it interesting that Mujus had double his number of "liked" due to his daily posts. One has to wonder if this was all a ploy to get +1s. Well done, sir, well done.

@obiwan: I agree with you on the bumming up yourself stuff, but, remember, this was a buncha years ago and, if you didn't make a strong statement/position, I don't think they would have even listened to you at all.

@ora, KA, while baptism does not save in many Protestant denominations, there is still a grace clause for the unborn and recently born that, if they die before having the opportunity to accept Christ, they will go to heaven.
greysoni (160 D)
30 Apr 12 UTC
The Catholic catechism has an interesting notion that someone who has not had the opportunity to become baptized gets a sort of "default" baptism if, because of their "goodness", they would have if they were given the opportunity. I think this comes from Vatican II.
