For profit prisons?
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/13/681261/mississippi-schools-sending-kids-to-prison-for-misbehaving-in-the-classroom/?mobile=nc

When you put private companies in charge of prisons they make a profit, can you do the same with education and pay for it with public money? i mean prison is free for the user right? Why not run schools on this basis too??

I love live games and was wondering if there are any regular live game players who might want to take part in a series of regular live games together, just simple full press non-anon games . We could turn it into a tournament of some kind but mostly i just wanna play a whole bunch of live games soon

Putn33 on Churchill: "Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One"...Fact or Fiction?
Putin, you're free to comment, freer to drop one of your clever cries of "jackass" or "doofus" below for my daring to disagree.
I don't think Churchill was "a Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One."
But maybe I'm wrong...am I? Have I missed a key memoir where Winston vows to expunge the Catholics or Jews or threatened to murder someone for saying the bar was empty or something? Or...is Putin being Putin?

possible bug?
In the game i was playing me and Russia had a good alliance until suddenly it said he had muted me. On the global chat he said on his end it said i had muted him, there was no reason for betrayal as we needed each other and the game ended up having an annoying 5 way draw, how do i report this to a mod or someone, or do you think he just randomly muted me?

Paradoxical Quote of The Day From Ben Stein
"Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to
prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen."

Now add this, "Many of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens."

Favorite artists; period of art
Surely the high culture types will have opinions on this?

I'm strongly partial to Umberto Boccioni. He had a sense for color that Matisse would envy, and the imagination to match it. Had he not died so young, I anticipate he would have had a career every bit as interesting and prolific as Picasso or Matisse.

I like Caspar David Friedrich. I generally like landscape paintings, especially by the Romantic painters. The emotion they convey is palpable.
I can understand how that can be interesting to someone. But it's not especially interesting to me, especially the art made before the invention of the camera. Obviously, we're talking about personal preference here, but I don't especially like the remove that I get from most landscape painting.
John William Waterhouse and Salvador Dali are two of my favorite artists. I usually enjoy the Impressionism section of museums the most.

"art made before the invention of the camera"

What? The 99.99% of how humanity chose to represent their existence doesn't interest you?

wow.

Is there any more inspiring painting than Napoleon crossing the st bernard pass? Thats heroism in the form of art.

Rolf Harris. Can you tell what it is yet?

After spending a while in the Louvre and various Italian galleries I've forgotten the names of I concluded that most classical art is, frankly, a bit shite. Same can be said of most modern stuff that gets pumped out these days.

The best place to find human created art is in the construction of buildings, be they Egyptian temples or skyscrapers. Aside from that there is little worth bothering with.

It is a striking painting. Especially if you want to glorify ambition. Personally I find the High Gothic cathedrals much more inspiring.

It's hard to limit myself on this. If I have to narrow it down, I'd probably say that the most striking period to me, in terms of sculpture, painting, architecture, and music, is the Baroque period. Bernini's "Ecstasy of St. Theresa", the works of Bach, the painting of Caravaggio, Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Velazquez, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. What other period exhibited such mastery of their art, and such passion in execution?

Two artists separated by two centuries, one reflecting the other and making his legacy so refined that it becomes as light as Venetian air: Veronese and Tiepolo.

@Oct - While I actually enjoy fine art too, I too find art in man's engineering. But I think some of mankind's greatest art can be found in the automobile. Cars like the Corvette C2 (especially the 5 Corvette Grand Sports from the mid 60s) or a Ferrari GT (Ferris Bueller's kit car replica is simply gorgeous) or older cars like the Deusenberg or the early Mercedes (or a gull wing SL). Form meets function makes art. But I also agree that buildings like the Chrysler building and bridges like the Roebling suspensions bridge (the Brooklyn bridges little sister here in Cincinnati) are truly architectural art.
