For profit prisons?
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/13/681261/mississippi-schools-sending-kids-to-prison-for-misbehaving-in-the-classroom/?mobile=nc

When you put private companies in charge of prisons they make a profit, can you do the same with education and pay for it with public money? i mean prison is free for the user right? Why not run schools on this basis too??

Live games , lots of live games!
I love live games and was wondering if there are any regular live game players who might want to take part in a series of regular live games together, just simple full press non-anon games . We could turn it into a tournament of some kind but mostly i just wanna play a whole bunch of live games soon

I've been looking for a game in which people actually write and its not a hassle to have the most basic communication with your neighbor, and.. well I havn't had much luck.

So hopefully starting a game on the forums will help me find a game like that!
So if you wanna join, just sign up. What is everyone's preferred length/bet amount

Putn33 on Churchill: "Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One"...Fact or Fiction?
Putin, you're free to comment, freer to drop one of your clever cries of "jackass" or "doofus" below for my daring to disagree.
I don't think Churchill was "a Genocidal Maniac If There Ever Was One."
But maybe I'm wrong...am I? Have I missed a key memoir where Winston vows to expunge the Catholics or Jews or threatened to murder someone for saying the bar was empty or something? Or...is Putin being Putin?

possible bug?
In the game i was playing me and Russia had a good alliance until suddenly it said he had muted me. On the global chat he said on his end it said i had muted him, there was no reason for betrayal as we needed each other and the game ended up having an annoying 5 way draw, how do i report this to a mod or someone, or do you think he just randomly muted me?

Why do people
not finalize and leave it with the gray check all the way to the limit? Is it some kind of strategy or just oversight?
Strx89 (100 D)
17 Aug 12 UTC
some people can't always ensure access to the site, they need the whole phase length to ensure their turn comes around regularly
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Aug 12 UTC
You signed up for a given [hase length, you play with that length. Stop whining. In the boardgame, phases are a set length as well. They don't run early.
Captain Dave (113 D)

Also, if you're uncertain about some of your units' moves, you can plug the rest in, and then wait for comms from allies/enemies. It still brings up the grey tick as you just need to have saved some of your moves for it to appear.
Mapu (362 D)

Dregner -- haha i didn't realize asking a question is considered whining.

Thanks others for you reply.
I do it sometimes because I'm either waiting on comms, or because I'm still thinking things over.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

@Mapu Draugnar is quite macho and right-wing so people asking questions is a sign of weakness which indicates you're new and ignorant and probably deserve to be bullied a bit until you toughen up....... you whining llittle wimp !!
Have you done national service yet, have you lost a limb fighting for your country. If the answer is no check to see if you're gay or communist, the answer may surprise you.
He didn't swear though, he's getting better ...... 'more lithium over here for Mr D' :-)
smcbride1983 (517 D)
17 Aug 12 UTC
@Nigee, ha, that was awesomely accurate :)
I don't get online very often, so I usually put in an early set of moves as a safety measure, but I don't Finalise. Later, if I get time, I revisit the game and look at alternatives. I almost always change some of my moves but then, when I'm happy, I do Finalise.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Aug 12 UTC
@Mapu - Sorry, I misinterpretted your intent. This forum sees people (established members o fth ecommunity even) whine and bitch and moan about others not readying up. I should have checked to see that you were new and given you the benefit of the doubt. Sorry again.
Oh, and thanks Captain Dave, I hadn't realised that someone who has saved moves but not Finalised gets a grey Tick instead of a green one - on my screen they're almost the same but now that I look closely I can see the difference.
Maniac (189 D(B))
17 Aug 12 UTC
Some people also fail to finalise when they can only retreat to 1 province or can only disband, they do this to annoy people who beat them. It is always advisable to chill about it, asking others to hurry in these circumstances can lead to abuse and never results in speeding people up. Such people also like to take their football home with them when their losing.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Aug 12 UTC
@Maniac - sometimes the one retreat/disband/fixed set of orders person will have orders in the next phase and needs the phase to run full length due to rea life. Now if it is their last disband, I agree 100%. But a retreat means they will have another set of orders coming up and should be afforded the benefit of the doubt.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
17 Aug 12 UTC
Some new players don't understand the difference between "Finalize" and "Save", but players who are aware of the difference are usually waiting on communications that directly affect their orders, like asking an ally where he is moving from so you can support the correct unit.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
17 Aug 12 UTC
Personally I almost always put in orders when I first pull up the game after a phase change. But then send out press and wait on responses and update as necessary.

People that don't do that will sometimes end up with all holds because they forget or are unable to make it back on. And usually an early set of orders is better than all holds.
Randomizer (722 D)
17 Aug 12 UTC
I see grey saves in gunboat games where there is no need for communications. Between that and the players that completely miss the phase because they no longer want to play you can wait for someone that has no good reason not to just click ready.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
17 Aug 12 UTC
Note that in a non-live gunboat game there can be reason to not ready/finalize. For example, 24 hour game and the phase will end tomorrow at noon. I could finalize now, but I won't have time to get online tomorrow. So I just save and the phase changes at noon and then I get online in the morning the day after with time to spare.

And for live gunboat games, a player might want to save an initial set of moves and then continue looking over the board, both in case of making changes to these moves and to think about the next phase.

I'm not saying there aren't people that do it for no good reason. I'm just saying that there are some good reasons.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Aug 12 UTC
@Randomizer - You agrred to the phase length so play it and stop whining. :-) But seriously, even in gunboat there may be a reason if the player wants to examine the board closer or maybe "sleep" on the orders considering other alternatives.
The take-home message: It could be for any number of reasons. All the way from comms to real life to strategy, to trying to drag it out to annoy you.
Best to chill, set a reminder for yourself and just log back. That's what works for me. Everyone has lives away from webDip. It's a game. :)

@Draug - take the quotes off of Sleep, because I literally sleep on my moves ;)

also nigee mentioned you didn't swear and equated that with you getting better, I don't see how that is true, in fact i'm worried you didn't swear. You really need to realize that when you fail to swear in a post it lets alot of people down ;)

Paradoxical Quote of The Day From Ben Stein
"Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to
prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen."

Now add this, "Many of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens."
