America, land of the free, home of the brave
There seems to be a general consensus here that america is for the most part, a force of (for the objectivists) "good" in this world. That it spreads freedom and democracy all over the world at great risk to itself.

If You HAD To Choose A GOP Nominee From The Debate...Who'd It Be?
Well, I just finished watching the GOP Debate (not all of it, missed the first third or so coming home from college) and my question is this:

I personally would NOT, as of yet, vote for ANY of the GOP nominees...but you had to choose someone, right now, after this last debate--who, and why? (And TETTLETON'S CHEW...YOU ARE FORMALLY INVITED IN...)

My pick:

Mitt Romney WAS the only GOP candidate I could even tolerate...

And that's still the case.

I wouldn't vote for him yet, I'd still take Obama over Romney, but AT LEAST I could see my way clear to hearing Romney out in a debate with Obama.

The other candidates, in my view:

-Bachmann: AN IDIOT...who got Jefferson WRONG in the debate as she attempted to cite him on the Seperation of Church and State bit, by the way...I like exactly 0% of her as a candidate, tying her with...

-Perry: I've already said WHY I think Perry not only wouldn't get my vote, but I'd be furious and frankly wish to leave the nation if he were elected and set out to do what he wrote he would like to, ie, take away Social Security and revamp the Supreme Court in a way that undermines the entire Checks and Balances principle...maybe that's part of the reason I like Romney best of all this bad lot--he doesn't seem to like that Constitution-raping fool of a fucker either (so yeah...don't like him.) ;)

-Herman Cain: He was funny...and that was about it...really didn't even hear him adress many issues head-on.

-Gary Johnson: WHO...? (Nice joke about those dogs, though.) :)

-Ron Paul: He said ONE thing I liked--the comment on how absurd it is to try and police the Day-After Pill--and that was it...it's still RP, and still not my cup of tea...but for what very little it's worth, he's above a good number of these fools in my book.

-Newt Gingrich: It's like a horrible merging of Dick Cheney and John McCain...GO AWAY, NEWT! I DON'T LIKE YOU IN THE HOUSE...I DON'T WANT YOU IN THE WHITE HOUSE!

Aaaaaaaand I can't even remember the others well enough at all.

Herman Cain.

He has no political experience. Obama is a politician. Bush was a politician. How do you think we got into this mess? I want a regular person running the country. Not a former community organizer (whatever the hell that is), and not a former governor of Texas.

He saved Godfather's Pizza from bankruptcy, and has a stellar track record in the business world. He is familiar with the type of situation the federal government is in and can fix it.

He earned everything he has and came from a humble background. He understands that anyone willing to work can find success.

He is very patriotic and genuinely believes that America is the greatest country the world has ever seen, and his goal is make sure that America remains the greatest country in the world.

What is wrong with the guy?

Oh, and he's not a moron like Bachmann, a crackpot like Paul, a liar like Perry, or a hypocrite like Romney.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

@ obiwan

Herman Cain hasn't gotten very many questions in any of the debates. I think the media is intentionally ignoring him. They want to focus on people that Obama can beat. They haven't given Ron Paul very much coverage either.
Putin33 (111 D)

It says something when a liberal can 'tolerate' Romney - "corporations are people too", "we need to tax poor people", "I was for Romneycare before I was against it". "Never mind that I exploited 9-11 at the 2002 olympics but refused to give tickets to 9-11 widows, instead selling $1000 tickets to my Utah buddies". That guy is the 'reasonable' Republican. Egads.

Gary Johnson. It doesn't matter if you don't know who they are, it matters on their views. He's actually fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

No offense...

But JIMMY CARTER didn't have too much political experience, either...

And isn't that who the GOP is comparing Obama unfavorably too ad naseum?

(Seriously...

IF I HEAR ONE MORE REPUBLICAN MENTION HOW AWESOME THEY THINK REAGAN IS...!

Let the corpse go, guys!

He's not Jesus Fucking Christ...you do NOT have to deify him with every speech or debate you have!

At least quote ANOTHER good President, or leader, for heaven's sake...just knock it off with Reagan, it's starting to get REALLY CREEPY...

I feel like the whole GOP field is just the Cult of Reagan now!) :/
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
23 Sep 11 UTC
But I agree with you on Bachmann being an idiot and Rick Perry being a Constitution rapist. He's also a hypocrite and a liar. Newt frankly has too much baggage to be a realistic candidate, and he is basically a combination of Cheney and McCain.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
23 Sep 11 UTC
@Gunfighter:

Well, I didn't care for the answers--or non-answers--he gave for the questions he DID get, either.

As for RP...again, liked his abortion shtick, to give credit where credit is due, his logic on how illogical to police the Day After Pill is something I agree with and was very logically and coherently phrased.

The thing is--he's still RP, ans still just not the guy for me...)

"But JIMMY CARTER didn't have too much political experience, either."

Herman Cain has absolutely no political experience. I do not trust politicians. I would trust myself to run the country better than any politician. I like Herman Cain because he's just an ordinary guy who feels like it is his duty to get elected and turn the country around.

@ obiwan

"Well, I didn't care for the answers--or non-answers--he gave for the questions he DID get, either."

That's because you are a liberal. Would you at least be willing to hear him out if he ever got some hardball questions and real media coverage?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
23 Sep 11 UTC
But that doesn't adress the fact that GOPers keep attacking OBama as Jimmy Carter II...

Assuming you don't WANT JC II, how can you advocate for a no-experience candidate when that's what JC I was?

"That's because you are a liberal. Would you at least be willing to hear him out if he ever got some hardball questions and real media coverage?"

I thought he had a few fair opportunities to give an answer in THIS debate, like on the jobs issue...

He totally danced around it and just said we need a strong leader.

You can have Alexander the Great, for all I care, if you want to talk strong leaders...

That doesn't solve the jobs problem.

I think Cain means well, but isn't cut out for this:

Someone who thinks all bills should be 5 pages or less needs to take a Poly Sci 101 class and learn about the legislative process...and NOT be in charge of our launch codes.
Putin33 (111 D)

"He has no political experience."

Except, you know, running the Fed in Kansas City.

"and has a stellar track record in the business world"

Pay no attention to that Enron-like Aquila scandal ripping off their employees.

"He earned everything he has and came from a humble background"

Indeed, how many chauffeurs do you know get tipped with Coca-Cola stocks?

"Oh, and he's not a moron like Bachmann, a crackpot like Paul, a liar like Perry, or a hypocrite like Romney."

He's all of those things and more. He wants to abolish the EPA and ban Muslims for public office. He said Planned Parenthood's purpose was to kill black babies. He opposed raising the debt ceiling, sabotaging our economy and credit rating. Supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Wants to reduce capital gains tax to zero. Opposes any taxes on offshore corporations. Supports the Arizona immigration law. Wants to completely privatize social security. Wants to implement a 23% sales tax.

(Additional sidenote--I forget the candidate, it was one of the anonymous assholes, but whoever put down gays in the military and was in favor of reinstituting, Don't Ask, Don't Tell, fail...

And whatever jackass who DARED boo the gay soldier who asked that question to the candidate should be thoroughly ashamed of himself!) >:(

Happy to see their is another Herman Cain supporter on these forums - nice to meet you Gunfighter! Are you old enough to vote in the primary?

Herman Cain has the private sector experience needed to think like a true capitalist - something both Bush and Obama have been incapable of. The degrees he has earned in addition to his extraordinarily effective management of Godfather's Pizza has proven him to be a very capable and intelligent person and businessman. My only concern would be his lack of foreign policy experience - but how that be much different than our current President, who also lacked foreign policy experience upon entering the presidency. The trick is to get good advisers, good Secretary of State (like Hillary Clinton has been for Obama), etc.

Cain is just a very likable guy. He evokes confidence when I see him speak, something we need in a President very desperately. His comments about Muslims are questionable; though most of them are taken absurdly out of context, some of them are not, at which point we have to trust his apologies and words when he says he didn't mean it. Everyone has sketchy things they've said before, be it people on this forum or people running for President, things we regret and didn't really mean - Herman Cain is a human being, not unlike anyone else.

His forward thinking policies would radically turn this country in the right direction. A shame he doesn't stand a chance in hell.

"Obviously you do."

There's no other word to describe them and their thirst-for-blood supporters. If the Democratic field in 2008 was as far-left as your people are far-right you'd be calling them communists and more. Hell, Obama is a middle of the road Democrat and you smear merchants have been calling him a socialist since before he was even inaugurated.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Sep 11 UTC
"most of them are taken absurdly out of context"

Right, like asking someone point blank if they'd be comfortable with a Muslim as a cabinet officer or judge, and then replying with "No", is an example of an "out of context" anti-Muslim quote.

Damn those gotcha questions.
Nelhybel (280 D)
23 Sep 11 UTC
Putin, I've seen liberals throw this one around a great deal, but have yet to ever see it cited. I haven't seen it largely cited by major news stations either, which leads me to believe it is a stuttered "no" followed by reference to his allegiance test or whatever it is he wants his whole cabinet to take.
Nelhybel (280 D)
23 Sep 11 UTC
Point of post I didn't say: link me please :D
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Sep 11 UTC
Right, another "out of context" quote, like his long explanation for why he doesn't want Muslims in government.

"“No, I will not. And here’s why. There is this creeping attempt, there is this attempt to gradually ease Sharia law and the Muslim faith into our government. It does not belong in our government. This is what happened in Europe. And little by little, to try and be politically correct, they made this little change, they made this little change. And now they’ve got a social problem that they don’t know what to do with hardly.”

But Sotomayor is a "bigot", riight.

"Herman Cain has the private sector experience needed to think like a true capitalist"

And we elected another President based on success as a businessman in the private sector once...

HOOVER was his name.

Well.

So far we have inexperienced, a la Jimmy Carter, and a businessman like Herbert Hoover.

Now, if Carter/Hoover doesn't sound like a sure-fire hit recipe for success as President, boy, I don't know what is...

I mean, what do professional politicians know, anyhow?

What good leaders have we ever gotten from statesmen and politicians?

...

Well, Adams and Jefferson and Madison...and then there was that Lincoln guy...and that wheelchair fella...and the Catholic dude...

NOPE!

No good presidents in THAT bunch!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

Mafialligator (239 D)

Ugh. Just the anti-Muslim sentiment or the anti gay sentiment alone would be enough to rule him out in my mind.
Canada has been down this road already, electing a businessman without a political background to Prime Minister. He was named Brian Mulroney. I won't say it was a disaster but in like 8 years you guys will be sick to DEATH with him.

To be entirely honest, everything in the states is just so far to the right, I actually cannot conceive of voting for any of them. It's rather like someone asking, "If you had to choose would you rather swallow Arsenic, Strychnine, or Cyanide?" They're all deadly poisons. So it's all more or less the same at the end of the day. No matter which I choose, I've contributed to myself being totally fucked.
