More noob questions
Just curious, when I'm at the "Home" page, some of the games I'm in have stars next to them like the stars that show up in threads you have posted in. What are these stars symbolizing?

The "Oh, Come On, It Wasn't THAT Bad," Screen and Stage Countdown
We've all seen it ...that disease known only as "fanboyitis" (or, since I suppose our diseases have to be politically correct nowadays, it's sister disease that's toally equal and in no way lesser than fanboyitis, fangirlitis.) A movie, play, book, or or show comes out- and it's great. The sequels come out- "Oh my God, those evil demons ruined EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING!!!" So sound off on The "Oh, Come On, It Wasn't THAT Bad" books, shows, films, and, yes, plays.

I guess I'll give it a start.
Strong support for the United States (fairly obvious) and Holland (gotta love the oranje)
I find Brasil a little overrated, which still means they're better than most, but not the favorite imo. Favorites have to be Spain if they're healthy; stacked top to bottom, and though they're tagged as chronic underachievers (*cough* england *cough*), I think winning euros 2 years ago meant loads to their confidence and experience. I'll put my money on them to win, though I think Holland will surprise a lot of people and make a serious run, and not only cause I support them.

and USA/England is decided by Jozy's fitness, how much Landon Donovan doesn't screw up, and how much they get the ball to Clint Dempsey. Tim Howard will give them a chance in any game they play.
I'm going USA 2 - England 1

figlesquidge (2131 D)

Wow, you all would seriously bet on the US against England?
I know I'm English, but matching players I would give it to England hands down. Saying that, did see the US in the confederations cup last summer and they were a nice unit. Isn't Altidore your fast striker? could cause a problem if Capello picks a slow defence, but otherwise I'm not sure that the US have enough firepower to break England down.

My prediction

Hurray for Schweinsteigger. I will be rooting for the home team (USA as unfortunate as that may be), and Germany.

I'll also be looking at Turkey to hopefully surprise bitches like they did in European Cup 2 years ago.

All that aside, who do I think will win (Whether I want them to or not...). Probably Spain.

rlumley=grammar whore... That's right, I said it.

I'll be supporting Greece and England, being born in one and living in the other :P.

I'd bet Spain to win, but i think Argentina might surprise despite Maradonna being a poor coach.

Also thinking North Korea could pull a few shockers out. ;)

@Hell the 2nd: Well, I recon NK will put out Portugal,Ivory Coast or even Brazil.

Interestingly, a poor start from Brazil leaving them 2nd in the group would pit them against spain in the 2nd round - something VERY good for Englands prospects!
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Or indeed the US if you win the group
moses (124 D)

@DbJ - up until the 11th, totally agree. good game going on right now. it'll make it one hell of a series if philly can even it up

@figles - Altidore is a one man wrecking crew (score one for 1989), as long as that ankle holds up, and with rio ferdinand now ruled out for the cup (steven gerrard should be captain anyway), there could be a few holes the likes of Altidore, Dempsey and Donovan could pry open. Like you said, they did beat the staunchiest of defenses in Spain and had Brasil on the ropes, so its a squad thats capable of anything
moses (124 D)

and is anyone else as bummed as i am about all the stars going down to injuries this past week? ferdinand, essien, ballack all out for sure. drogba, pirlo, altidore serious question marks. boo meaningless warm up matches

The last time it really mattered was 1950: US 1 - Eng 0. I'll grant you that man for man the English have more talent, but my feeling is that the US squad is a bit more cohesive of a unit and has a lot of tools that negate individual brilliance.

That said, if that Shrek look alike is fit and comes up against an American defense like we saw the past few weeks, they'll be some crow and humble pie served on this thread.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Jun 10 UTC
@moses - "staunchiest of defenses in Spain " Erm, spain are not famed for their defence, they're famed for going forward and scoring more than you. I know you beat them, but they're famous for scoring not defending.
Erm, loosing Ferdinand is far from a bad thing for us - he's been out of form recently anyway, and if it means we get a form (or indeed pace) player in we'll be in good shape.

@checkmate - Really? They have a great squad yes, but a shocking manager! He's made some questionable calls in picking them, and I haven't been convinced by them in quite some time. They had a real hard time getting through qualification even.

Moses, Sweinsteiger and Ribery are still uninjured, right?
moses (124 D)
05 Jun 10 UTC
spain are rock solid at the back. put sergio ramos, puyol, pique, capdevila, xabi alonso, or any other spanish defender/midfielder in front of one of the top 2 keepers in the world and you've got a defense anyone would be lucky to crack. their game is centered around dominating possession with clinical passing and ball control while sporting the best striking duo in the game designed to make you pay for even the slightest of breakdowns
granted, they're not exactly italy or greece, but they're nowhere near a "screw defense, let's go score" brasil either

and losing rio is a major blow for the english team, if for nothing more than their recent captain uncertainties. continuity is a very big deal for any team, especially one for which the players do not usually play. solid, stable leadership is key. fabio cannavaro is the 3rd or 4th best center half available for italy talent wise, but his commanding presence at the back is unparalleled, and that could have very well been the primary catalyst behind a 2006 world championship. and thats not even to mention a potential replacement...

@figle
maybe manager is not so good, but you don't need to be so a good manager to make players like messi, higuaín, tévez, mascherano, verón, mascherano, di maría, heinze, etc, play as they know and as good as they can, and with no pressure. (it's enough not to be a terrible idiot as domenech, who lets all his decisions to the stars)
u should at least agree that argentina has the most fearsome foward line. and i'd really prefer teams with good forward to win the cup than those who play horribly defensive like italy, for instance.

"play as they know" - well he doesn't play the type of football Messi (the best player in the world) is used to and as a result he's a shadow of his club self.
