Just curious, when I'm at the "Home" page, some of the games I'm in have stars next to them like the stars that show up in threads you have posted in. What are these stars symbolizing?

The "Oh, Come On, It Wasn't THAT Bad," Screen and Stage Countdown
We've all seen it ...that disease known only as "fanboyitis" (or, since I suppose our diseases have to be politically correct nowadays, it's sister disease that's toally equal and in no way lesser than fanboyitis, fangirlitis.) A movie, play, book, or or show comes out- and it's great. The sequels come out- "Oh my God, those evil demons ruined EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING!!!" So sound off on The "Oh, Come On, It Wasn't THAT Bad" books, shows, films, and, yes, plays.

Best/Worst alliance
What do you think is the best and worst 2-way alliance on the board?
largeham (149 D)
07 Jul 10 UTC
I'm not sure about best, but I would say that Austria/Russia and Austria/Turkey alliances are hard to pull off.

Austria/Russian can work really well - it's the non-Juggernaut Juggernaut.

For me, Italy/Austria is both the best and worst. If both sides can resist the stab, it's great. If not, then the stabber tends to go down as well.

Austria/Russian, French/English and Austria/Italy are all very strong alliances, though French/English is unlikely to occur compared to the others due to greed. I loathe the day I play as Turkey

I like E/G. After 208 games I still haven't been able to do a RT. Dumb Russians and Turks. Why won't they cooperate with me?
Going to have to take the Juggernaut for best. England-Germany is a strong second.

As for worst, I think Turkey/Italy is worse than Turkey/Austria, though in truth any alliance with Turkey not named the Juggernaut is pretty bad.
largeham (149 D)
08 Jul 10 UTC
Theoretically, Turkey/Germany could work well, provided France and England don't attack Germany (a very big if). Turkey/Italy should work (quick elimination of Austria, and then they part ways), but I can't figure out why it doesn't (please enlighten me). And Turkey/England works well, though that's because they only focus on Russia and then ignore each other.

anything when you're allied with madmarx . . . to a certain point.
spyman (424 D(G))
08 Jul 10 UTC
There are so many variables that it is hard to say. The best alliance for me can depend on where all the other powers are at.
That said, as France I like an alliance with England, and when I am England I like Germany.
As Italy a successful key lepanto with Austria is very satisfying.
spyman (424 D(G))
08 Jul 10 UTC
The worst would probably be Turkey/Austria.I don't think those powers have a natural connection. However circumstances can push them together and I have played a game as turkey with a good alliance with Austria. Same story for turkey/Italy.
spyman (424 D(G))

Really the best alliance is with someone you feel you can make plans with - communication is what matters the most. Perhaps even more than geography.

The best alliance for me is the Juggernaut. If I am in it or against it and organizing the Western Triple it is always a Great battle, hard fought to the end
centurion1 (1478 D)
09 Jul 10 UTC
Jugg has weaknesses like hoe people scream when they spot it and you face an allied board remainder. My fave is definetly austria and italy
killer135 (100 D)

I like forming the Western Triple to stop the juggernaut but If i am in it you can count on it turning into a froggernaut

Say what you will, but I've had good results with Austria/Turkey. Austria/Germany has also worked very well. Turkey/Italy and Turkey/Russia works pretty well too, but haven't won me any games.
ava2790 (232 D(S))

I've had great results with Austria/Turkey. Unfortunately I had to stab Austria in all cases to get my solo.

Also, the wintergreen doesn't appear to be so popular on this site...
killer135 (100 D)
09 Jul 10 UTC
wintergreen?
^Probably because of the popularity of the Juggernaut. Austria gets partitioned, and then there's little reason for Russia to stab Turkey when it can continue bulldozing to the win, seems to be the logic.
Wintergreen is Russia/Italy, named after the white-and-green Russia and Italy, respectively, on some game boards.

I have never done russia and Italy alliance. That could be worth a try some time
rudekker (584 D)
09 Jul 10 UTC
Actually, I won once with an Austria/Turkey alliance by stabbing Turkey at the last minute.
killer135 (100 D)
09 Jul 10 UTC
There is one problem with the Juggernaut. If you dominate the board Turkey usually stops advancing with his armies one Italy is dead, it leaves Armies in all spaces while Russia has to move to attack Germany and England so his SCs are open . So if Turkey has 13 SCs and Russia leaves all his SCs open Turkey can win
Miro Klose (595 D)

I once played Russia/Germany . Russia attacked Austria together with Turkey than stabed
it, Germany attacked France together with England and than stabbed England together with Russia. Has been a short game :-)
Russia doesn't have to commit everything to offense in a Juggernaut, killer. It would seem necessary to garrison units in Austria and Rumania.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Germany Italy.

Now I know they don't affect each other early game, but if they both become successful, they are great allies, as Italy takes the south and Germany the north.
I've had England/France work together to the bitter (and I do mean bitter) end before. We were stood against Austria, Italy, Russia, and Turkey for a good four years in a grueling Mediterranean naval battle. We finally lost but without stabbing each other.

I like Austria/Turkey & Italy/France as well. Anything can work at any given time, but I guess England/ Turkey would be a little hard to pull off .... lol.

I've never seen Germany/Russia work for very long. Once Germany secures France then Russia is too tempting. Once Germany commits to France his sc's become too tempting for Russia.

Juggernaut is a personal favorite definitely, Italy/Austria and England/Germany are other favorites.
jwalters93 (288 D)

i definately like the Juggernaut the best, though a F/E alliance is a close second.
jwalters93 (288 D)

if, that is, the other side of the F/E alliance doesn't stab me....

On second thoughts, Russia/Germany is actually worse than Austria/Turkey. Germany and Russia are ill-positioned to take on England/France and Russia is better off with Austria, Italy and Turkey on the mainland. In Germany's case, England is a better ally for Scandinavian control (as it can also help in the Western Triangle) and in the east, Austria is a born ally. In the case that both (or even one) is successful, both are doomed to fight for expansions sake
I actually think the England/Germany alliance is the most effective on the board, obviously provided no stabs. Germany helps England get a stranglehold on Scandinavia by keeping Russia out of Sweden until there's an army in Norway, England helps Germany romp through the low countries into France. Usually, by about Aut 02, you can persuade Italy to jump in to go after Marseilles or Iberia, and France is doomed. Then England starts moving into Iberia and the Med, and working their way through Russia in tandem with Germany. After that, Germany has the armies to just plow through Austria or their Turkish successors, while England keeps working the flanks. It's a deadly combination.

Austria and Turkey are the worst alliance. Where does Turkey go after they rout Russia out of the Black Sea region and knock Italy back to the Ionian line?
wilhelm* (401 D)
12 Jul 10 UTC
France/Russia can work very well, especially for Russia. Since they share no borders but can still squeeze the central powers together, there's no chance of stabbing. Turkey/Russia works very well if the two dare to trust each other.
Miro Klose (595 D)
12 Jul 10 UTC
Germany/Russia alliance worked perfectly for me. But it´s important to that both of them find a 2nd ally, diplomatically they work together but to the other players they show doubt each other. Nobody will suspect them of working together
Le_Roi (913 D)
12 Jul 10 UTC
Austria/Turkey is my favorite. Works devastatingly (or has) for me.
As for the worst...E/F or E/G usually leads to a raw deal for the non-Englishman.
Onar (131 D)
12 Jul 10 UTC
I hate the G/R and the A/T. Both never work well for at least one party.

I like G/F and I like E/G. But the latter is more in theory than in practice.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
13 Jul 10 UTC
I have found that Germany and Turkey do well together as the game progresses.

In my opinion all members of the western triple are basically doomed to fight at some point.
