Dear Feckless Clod,

As promised, here is a formal statement regarding your game "Grab Your Partners" (not sure if innuendo is was intended). The game has ended in a crushing landslide victory by the solo kid, Harry Noballs.

I posted this in the Rank system vote thread, but I think it will get looked over, so I've copy and pasted it below. If we can implement an ELO system without having to eliminate the point system, this is what it might look like...

President Palin or Biden?
They would be a heartbeart away from the job after all...

Its not even a contest. 18 months of a governor vs 36 years as a senator.
As a Governor has won an election over a Senator on every occasion since 1960, you're going for Palin then?
Churchill (2280 D)
03 Sep 08 UTC
Simple common sense seems to go your way Centurian, but look at the positions. I personally will be voting Obama-Biden because I believe that the President can hire people experienced in technical fields, what we really need is a visionary leader: McCain? I think not.

You have to consider that governor is an executive position and Senator is a legislative one.
Centurian (3257 D)
03 Sep 08 UTC
No. I was focusing on the relative inexperience. We know what we are getting with Biden, not so with Palin. Governor of Alaska isn't the same as a governor of a larger more significant state
Centurian (3257 D)

Senators are team players, governors are leaders. Vice Presidents (unlike presidents) need to be team players rather than leaders.

alaska is the largest state
WhiteSammy (132 D)

and honestly Alaska is a pretty important state
i mean, come on, what other state do you know of that was bought for pennies per acre?
The question is not who will make the best Veep, but the better Commander in Chief of the two... For one reason or another there is a high probability that either of them will get the job after all.
At least Alaska cost pennies... Manhattan cost only beads !

I'd prefer a President who believes in evolution, so I'd go with Biden. :)

But what do I know, I'm Canadian.

Anyone who wants the job of President desperately enough to actually go through the process of running for it probably shouldn't be allowed to have the job.

still, i can't think of anyone who might have been picked for VP who didn't run for president, except Lieberman.
aoe3rules (949 D)

WhiteSammy: he meant larger by population, and you know that. and Alaska is actually rather unimportant.
MajorTom (4417 D)

LOL, best debate ever.

im gonna have to go with alaska as a 6 out of 10 on the importance scale. (1 being the least)
that high? I'm not even sure Alaska really exists!
Zarathustra (3672 D)

President Biden all the way. Im all about pushing through the ranks at an accelerated rate. It is somewhat impressive that Palin went from mayor of a city of 5-8,000 to Governor of Alaska to VP candidate in the course of a few years. However, not only would i be concerned that a person who as at most been the leader of 600,000 people for two years, but more so the fact that the lady is a bit crazy i think.

From Wiki
In 2007, the Alaska Creamery Board recommended closing Matanuska Maid Dairy, an unprofitable state-owned business. Palin objected, citing concern for dairy farmers and a recent infusion of $600,000 in state money. Palin subsequently replaced the entire membership of the Board of Agriculture and Conservation.[74] The new board reversed the decision to close the dairy. Later in 2007, the unprofitable business was put up for sale. No offers met the minimum bid of $3.35 million,[75][76] and the dairy was closed. In August 2008, the Anchorage plant was purchased for $1.5 million, the new minimum bid. The purchaser plans to convert it into heated storage units.

Her clean government ideology seems a bit tarnished by things like that.

Additionally, she and I are almost complete opposites on every possible point. At least Biden and I have some similar views on things

"because I believe that the President can hire people experienced in technical fields"

Thats what people thought about GWB. He hired very knowledgable and capable people, like Cheney and Rumsfeld. How'd that turn out?
sean (3490 D(B))

good one dingle. as we ALL know it turned out horribly.

i heard that Palin tried to get the town librarian fired because she wouldnt remove certain books that otained swear words from the library when she becaame the town mayor.

That Mcain went for a female as his VP pick was smart true but the are loads of female republican politician and businesswomen that would have been wiser choices. I have heard that he really wanted Lieberman or Ridge but several important figures in the conservative world told him bluntly that choosing a pro choice VP would be impossible and would guarantee a lack of christian turnout come November. Thus based on 2 meetings with Palin and one phone call he picked her.
He needed to do it quickly to steal the thunder from Obama's speech, watched by an audience of 38 million Americans (wonder how many will tune in to Mc cain speech....hope he doesnt go with the green background again!)

just a few problems with her.

Palin's unmarried 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant

by itself this doesnt matter much but does somewhat work against the conservative mantra that abstinence is the only sex education that teenagers need.

· Palin has supported the Alaskan Independence party, which wants a vote on seceding from the US

that's going to hurt. she was a member of it as was her husband.

· the sacking of a state employee, the so called trooper gate, the press will love this one.

· No FBI background checks were carried out on her despite Republican claims. Indeed the whole vetting system was rushed.

· Palin campaigned for $27m in federal money when mayor of a 9,000-population town. It is a kind of funding McCain disapproves of

Governors have no direct control over the national guard and being next to russia is like saying the mayor of Any Northern Us state is a foreign policy expert due to canada being close by.

I really feel that put in a corner (most polls are pretty steady at obama 46-48 and Mc cain at 41-44, CNN is not an expert polling organization. stick to zolby, survey usa, gallup. Cable and networks are famous for massaging the question in polls to get the result they want, ie the most newsworthy) that Mcain tried to boost his chances by going with a woman by also going for someone his christian base would love. thing is female clinton supporters are nearly universally pro choice and anti putting creation theory in the classroom.

and i think alaska is more important than you people give it credit for. It has fish, a very large portion of the crab industry, oil, wildlife conservation, gold, easy access to russia, and a place to go when the "more important" states start to overflow with people. If you are wondering, no i do not or have not ever lived in alaska but i would like to go. Also just bc Palin dealt with less people in less time than probably any person to ever be selected for vp and even though she wants to dig for oil in alaska, she has had the experience of being im charge of a very large chunk of the US. Once again im not sure who i will vote for but i think its important to give people recognition/respect for things that they have done

oh i think palin is a smart cookie and has hands on exp in running a town and an important state . But i will not vote for anyone who belives in creation theory and not evolution, just say no is the best sex ed you can give teenagers and women who are raped have no right to an abortion.

Joe Biden would be a poor president.

It's like saying Ted Kennedy or Joe Lieberman should be president. Great legislators they may be, but effective executive, they would not make.
philcore (317 D(S))

hahahahhahaha ... how funny that everyone is making this about the relativce experience of the VICE president and siding with Biden!!! Can't the exact opposite argument be made for the person we'll actually be voting for ... the freaking PRESIDENT? If you're for Biden over palin, then you must be for McCain over Obama!! otherwise your argument is flawed and you should stick with the fact that you just want Obama to win, not McCain. Let's try a little intellectual honesty, can we?
DeliciousWolf (112 D)

You know, After watching this political campaign since from its early Primary stages, I've made my choice, and I'm just sick and tired of the bullshit arguments, crass pandering, and slanders and smears, both from Politicos and citizens. I'm beginning to tune out, and as the vicious rhetoric ramps up towards Nov. 7 I'm only looking forward now to the Presidential, and especially Vice-Presidential debates. The desperately poor intellectual quality of the arguments of certain parties (and people I know) in defense of their candidates, right or wrong, cynically desperate to defeat their opponents have sickened me. America, shame on you. I'm turning off, tuning out, and voting.

Might I just add, I'm sick of debating honest ideas against prejudiced imbeciles, to no effect. I've learned the bitter maxim: "Never argue with idiots."
valoishapsburg (314 D)

I agree with Philcore. I think the original intent of knocking Palin on experience is that it represented that one of McCain's argument was now null in most people's opinions. It has turned into some strange Biden has more experience than Palin. If you look at it that way then Biden should head the ticket. If you look at it in the terms of Executive Experience then Palin would be superior. But I will vote based on which candidate best represents my positions. Not on the VP (though i realize it does make a difference), not on age, not on race, not on sex, but the two candidates.

Also, when ever VP succession is mentioned why is the VP only mentioned in terms of potential commander-in-chief? The president, while having almost sole control over foreign policy, also has other important duties that influence everyday life
nitish (2087 D(S))

Joe Lieberman actually did run for president; he was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in 2004. Tim Pawlenty was perhaps the most talked-about VP nominee who never ran for president.

Just wanted to point out a fact, not get into the argument.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

I believe that we should look at the president candidacy rather than vice. After all, the president is the head of the state and the vice is just his butler, carrying out orders. The president makes all the decisions and does all the shows. The vice is relatively unimportant other than the title itself.
flashman (2274 D(G))

You completely miss the bus there Gooble... the point is that given an accident/incident with the President, the VP takes over... Read the first post: that's the implication.
dont forget that mccain is 92 years old.
sean (3490 D(B))
04 Sep 08 UTC
72 isnt he? but yes that is old.

but really i dont care about this "experience" hooplah.
cheney, rumsfield and associates had a lot of "experience" ..fat lot of good it did them, they still stuffed up grandly.
judgment is important, and mc cain choosing palin after a meeting her once, sending his team to do a proper full interview the day before he choose her...thats not judgment I can believe in:)

and all this republican " we are against the Washington elite" crap

..the US has had a republican president for 8 years and 6 out of the last 8 years the republican have been in power in both houses of congress. The republican financial support comes from multinationals, energy, tobacco and HMOs. They are made up mainly of white WASPS and other Christian groups.

they are the elite

does anyone buy their crap?

I need a favour from someone in the UK
My company is setting up operations in Britain. I've secured two freephone (toll free) numbers and need to test that they are working right, but a test can only be effected from within the UK and I know of no one who can do this for me.

If you're in the UK and are willing to telephone two freephone numbers for me, just to verify that they ring through properly, I would be most appreciative.

Drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll provide you this the freephone numbers.

And thanks. Yaniv

Ingame solution for multi-account?
I am strongly suspicious that france and turkey are the same person in a game I am playing:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5374

This is based on past game history and France trying to talk me down from attacking Turkey (its 1902). I'm Italy in this game and it makes sense for me to avoid fighting france but to follow through with my stab on turkey. Assuming they aren't kicked off (which they should be) or until then what am I expected to do? This throw the game into an unfortunate loop.

Skipped phase in "002b"?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5460 That's the URL. I think the current phase should be Autumn 1902, but there's a chance that I'm horribly mistaken. It now lists the current phase as Spring 1903. Will somebody check on that and make sure I'm not crazy?

Support?
I know this has come up before, but here goes. I want to move a fleet in Constantinople to Bulgaria(sc) with support from the Black Sea. From what I've read in the forum in the past, this is a valid support. The game, however, does not give me the option to support a move to Bulgaria(sc); only Bulgaria and Bulgaria(nc). This is regarding a move that will be processed in 24 hours, so time is a factor for responses.

Possible bug in game 5406
In game #5406, 'the greatest game ever told', shouldn't Tyrolia's attack on Munich in Autumn of 1902 have cut Munich's attack on Burgundy? Maybe it's changed since I last played, or maybe I'm just crazy.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

I might disappear for a few days
I'm sure many people have heard of the civil unrest here in Thailand incited by the PAD. There have been rumours that some protesters may attempt to cut Bangkok's power - if that happens I lose my access to the internet until it gets restored.

There was a clash between Government supporters and PAD protesters this morning and there was a death. The military did state that they would get involved soon afterwards. I do believe that since the rumours are so widespread that the military would be able to prevent it but I don't know for certain.

Anyways, my fingers are crossed that everything will be sorted out.

Surrendering
I'm GMing my first Diplomacy game in a while at another site, and I've received a request from one of my players that I'm not sure how to handle. The player in question has the low supply center count and is in a very precarious situation (current season is Summer 1904), and has requested that he surrender his territories and units to another nation that he is allied with rather than have them fall into the hands of the nations that are attacking him.

I know this isn't in the scope of the official rules, so I'm curious to know if there's any precedent for allowing something like this or not. (My inclination is to allow it, but I'd appreciate some direction from people more knowledgeable than myself.) :-)
