Learnt something new about the Dip Rules yesterday...Spaces with 2 Coasts
I may not be the only one but I did not realize that a fleet can support a unit sitting on a coast it cannot access. So for instance, a Fleet in the West Med supported a fleet sitting on the Spanish North Coast. Learn something new every day...

Site Feature Additions
The mods have often invited suggestions for feature changes and I wanted to check if there is anything in the works for the following:

1) Its frustrating to be able to read only very limited chat in the individual chat window. To read through old chat, one has to go to the full message history and search for what you want, which is a very tedious task.
Is there any way to add a scroll bar in the individual chat panes which would allow you to scroll up to read chat history with the country in question.
2) The game history is usually not arranged in chronological order. Most of it is; but the last 5-6 games are mostly always misordered.
3) Any statistics generator which would allow you to input parameters and obtain statistics for your own games as well as games in general?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

#2: yes, it is. The game history on your profile is ordered by start date.

I properly just haven't found it. But it would be nice to be able to read your old PMs and not only when someone writes you.
Sh@dow (3512 D)
05 Jan 15 UTC
I know it is supposed to be so which is why I said *most of it is* - but everytime I go to my profile or someone else's; the games on page1 are almost always in wrong order.
There will be a couple of Oct/Nov games and then the Dec games in 3-4-5 position before the correct chronological order is restored on page 2.
Perhaps it is a bug?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
05 Jan 15 UTC
Can you PM me an example? I suspect you are looking at game end date, which is the only date displayed. The games are ordered by game start date, which is not displayed.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
05 Jan 15 UTC
Blue Baboon: I agree. Displaying old PMs is on the wishlist.

Re: #1, I'll extend the number of messages displayed in the chat window soon, provided it causes no issues.

#3 is a bit vague for me to speak to, but it sounds interesting. Probably a low priority, I'm afraid.

Note that our code is open source and we welcome contributions. https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/

Oh wait; it is displayed by start date; not end date. Ah..ok! Just read that!
Shouldn't it be displayed by end date?
Sorry for the confusion..

And what about the other 2 features? Any chance?

I'd like to be able to "watch" a game and get notifications for when it has been moved to the next phase (for games I am not personally playing).

I'd like a game-mode where Diplomacy cannot be conducted during retreats and build a la the board game (I mean one can argue this should be default but what I'm asking for is enough code/social change I wouldn't dare reach for more (or at least for live games))

I mean these are just wishful thoughts. Really fixing RR metric displays and RR-game-modes are what I really want and what I'm really getting so I'm all good.

In non-gunboat live games I'd like to have more time for the pregame diplomacy turn. Eg. if the timer is set to 5 min, then I'd like to 20 min for the first term, so one can get a better feeling for the board and there'll be a puffer for people coming a bit later. It may also reduce these awful first turn NMRs.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

I'd really like the "Mark message as unread" feature from vDip.
@Chaqa: could you elaborate on the use of this? Not immediately clear to me.
captainmeme (1723 DMod)
05 Jan 15 UTC
Basically it's for when you receive a message and don't have time to reply to it at the time. It's not really necessary for Classic, where there's only 7 chat tabs so you can check them all quite quickly to see if there was a message you forgot about, but in large variants like WWIV and KW901 it can be very easy to forget about a message someone sent you, and never check their chat tab. That feature was a godsend for those variants.

It's also quite nice for account sitting - on vDip when I need someone to sit my account, I will write up what's going on in each game in the 'Notes' tab then mark it as unread to make sure my sitter remembers to read it. I'll also mark as unread chat tabs for people the sitter needs to communicate with urgently.

1] A choice of colour schemes to cater for colour-blindness (there was a consultation on this but no action yet);
2] clearer, larger, simpler symbols to denote unit location (eg large square = fleet, large circle = army);
3] clearer differentiation between 'Ready' and 'Not Ready' ticks;
4] clearer differentiation between Pause and NMR (exclamation marks) symbols;
5] unit with no retreat space is automatically and immediately disbanded without player intervention;
6] player with no SCs has all units automatically and immediately disbanded at builds/disbands phase without player intervention;
7] game terminates (I believe) on achievement of 18 at Autumn movement phase, without allowance for retreats (which may result in changed SC count).
8] option to enter moves for units owned in next phase before expiry of retreats or builds/disbands phase;
9] option of different phase length for retreats and builds/disbands.
Thanks.

ATC thx for putting it on the wishlist.

Could the buttons for 'Cancel', 'Draw' and 'Pause' be moved below the list of the players?
Have drawn a game by mistake because my phone acted up so I hit draw, which everybody already had done. I didn't want the draw because I was winning. They wanted it because they wasn't.

This is not wish for development but could we do something about the use of the draw button? People use is like insane. When people are behind they put draw on even though it is clear that they aren't going to join a draw or someone is winning.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

@Minister:

basically if you read a message but you want to mark it as unread you click the button. It just puts the message symbol next to that country's tab. It's great for me because I'll promise something and forget later, but if I can mark it I know.

The ability to have different times for retreat and builds phases.
@Chaqa, Capt: thanks for explanation. It wasnt clear what good it would do in a seven player game, but I can see its use in more players

@thomas/blue/ssorenn: thanks, good additions.

Note that - as always - the wishlist is longer than the timelist of our devs. So although we add to the wishlist quite liberally, we're quite picky with choosing those items we actually start to develop.

Not to pile on, but if you get to making time changes, What about being able to only play during the week, seems like a lot of NMRs happened on weekends when people find themselves busy with family or friends

Oh, lastly, and this would solve a lot of problems with live games----when all players finally sign up for games, a second acknowledgment that people are present and ready to play.

they have this feature on playdip

Good suggestions! I fully agree with Sh@dow's first point, and I think especially thomas dullan's 5, 6, and 9 would be quite helpful to speed up the game by removing unnecessary delays.

I have a few other, minor suggestions for the advanced settings:
- Change anonymous players to the default setting, instead of no
- Add feature to set different length for the first turn, Spring 1901
- Non-default option of fixed game start time; if selected, the game won't start when there are seven players, but wait until the pre-game period length is finished. It's sometimes annoying if a game or phase starts a couple of hours earlier than expected.
(Or simply add the remainder of the pre-game period time to the length of the first turn, which, I think, doesn't happen right not, at least not always)
- A non-default fixed deadlines option could be introduced as well, i.e. a new phase will only start when the timer expires, but not when everybody has submitted orders and is ready. However, I guess only very few people would like this option; I don't, to be honest.

These suggestions are not really important, though. Thank you for your time.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

Nescio: two of your suggestions are covered by not readying orders. If you want the phase to go through at the scheduled time, don't press ready. This is a pretty common use of the save button, I think.
Nescio (1059 D)
05 Jan 15 UTC
Only the last point is, I think.
It would be great if there where 6 and/or 7 minute phases so we can play live games on Modern and America.

Dullan's #5 & #6 would go a long way toward speeding up games by eliminating opportunities for bad losers to deliberately delay. They seem to be easy to implement, since the code already recognizes the situation. I hope they can be added soon.

In #6 though what if there is a retreat to an SC
VirtualBob (209 D)
05 Jan 15 UTC
#6 applies to build/disband phase, so it comes after retreats.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
05 Jan 15 UTC
In thomas_dullan #6, the auto-disband only happens during the builds phase, at which point any retreats to SCs would have been complete. Love #5 also.

To continue with his suggestions, for #3, what if "Saved" orders were a single checkmark in gray and "Ready" orders were a double checkmark in green?

I'm not so sure about #7 though. The 4th Edition (2000) rules state, "After each fall turn, (including retreats, if any) players adjust their units to match the number of supply centers they control." Someone might just retreat a dislodged unit into an unoccupied SC, reducing the putative victor's count below 18.

I like the idea of a 7 minute phase. I'd also like to see 1 D 6h and 1 D 18h phases.
