SoW Game(s)?
School of War game/games. Anyone interested in getting involved?

The basic idea (for those of you unfamiliar) is that seven newer players are involved in a game. Each of them are assigned a Teacher's Aide (TA) who is a higher level player who gives them pointers as the game progresses. A couple professors also offer commentary on the game each turn, but without knowledge of press.

Are there other interested parties out there? I'd love to be a prof this time, but if higher level players out there are interested (and there are LOTS of higher level players here) I'd happily TA again.

Two SOW games, one beginner level and one intermediate, just ended a few weeks ago, and we had trouble keeping players active as well as finding seven TAs and willing and active professors.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Sep 13 UTC
Interested, but since I already played in 2 as a student and I'm still not very good, I don't really think I fit in anywhere...

Interested, nonetheless.

The trouble with last time was all the freaking pauses, and everyone except me becoming weary. I was the last to vote draw.

That was beginner level, I know little about the intermediate one.
2ndWhiteLine (2606 D(B))
18 Sep 13 UTC
Summer is a hard time to hold a continuous game without pauses, given vacations and whatnot.
It might be easier this time around, since summer and presumably vacation season is over. But I'd strongly advise keeping it to one game.

Didn't realize that a couple just finished. I've been away from the site for a couple years and am just getting back. I agree with Stackelberg - that it should be limited to a single game. I'm willing to give it a shot if there are enough people interested.

So far we have

Players:
Duckofspades
steephie22

TA or Prof:
Triumvir

@2ndWhiteLine and @Steckelberg - are either of you interested in being involved? Player, TA, Prof?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
18 Sep 13 UTC
Why would you let either of those two be players?
Triumvir (1193 D)
18 Sep 13 UTC
Because they're new and are looking for advice in playing. That's sort of the point of a SoW game.
I think bo_sox's point is that if you're taking all comers, first-come, first-served, the game isn't likely to succeed. You need some indicator of commitment/interest, and suitability for the position they're volunteering for. Eg, look at resign rates, join date, # games completed, GR, etc.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
18 Sep 13 UTC
Steephie at least can be in the intermediate one. I was actually talking about Stack and 2WL, you offered to let them in as players. They are way, way past player stage.

Good advice offered above either way.
2ndWhiteLine (2606 D(B))

I suck at FP so I may as well join :)
Triumvir (1193 D)
18 Sep 13 UTC
@sox - I misunderstood. Of course you are right that 2WL and Stack would make better TAs or Profs than players. The point of looking at resign rates is also well taken.
Triumvir (1193 D)
19 Sep 13 UTC
So. Sox, 2WL, and Stack. Are you interested in participating in some way?

And what about other people. Anyone else interested in being a player/TA/prof? Or should I just let this go for a while?
Triumvir (1193 D)
19 Sep 13 UTC
I'll bump this one more time and then I'll le it die. Sounds like not enough interest to get a game going.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
19 Sep 13 UTC
I don't think I should be player, TA or professor honestly. Unless this isn't for newcomers.
Battalion (177 D)
21 Sep 13 UTC
I'd be up for an intermediate level (or beginner if that is deemed more appropriate). Should be getting some points back soon for entry...
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

I would be up for this, as a player!
John Viva (157 D)

Sounds like a good opportunity. I would like to try as a player.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
21 Sep 13 UTC
If missed turns are a problem, I would be happy to also commit to never missing a turn. I would prefer somewhere between one and three day turns- but maybe SoW needs longer than that? What sort of arrangement were you thinking?

How does sharing the press with your mentor work?
Triumvir (1193 D)
21 Sep 13 UTC
@Tin_Can Missing turns is always problematic (in an SoW game or in any game on this site, especially if you intend to win). I would imagine turns would be in that 1-3 day range (specifics could be decided later. As far as sharing press goes, you just have to communicate with your TA/mentor through PM's or by exchanging e-mails (I've done it both ways). The specifics of that are up to each Player/TA pair.

So, as far as interested players we now have:
A_Tin_Can
John Viva
Battalion
Duckofspades
(steephie22?)

@Steephie - You are in sort of a strange position, aren't you. You clearly have more experience than many of the other interested players but (and please don't take offense) you don't quite have the record to be a Prof. (Hell, I'm not sure I have the record to be a prof). Maybe TA would be best for you if you're interested in participating.
mendax (321 D)
21 Sep 13 UTC
I'd be interested in participating. I suspect that by this point I'm too much of an established player to be a player, and I am not sure I have the record to be a Prof, but if I fit into either of those roles I'd be up for it.
thehamster (3263 D)
21 Sep 13 UTC
Hey, not sure if I'm worth consideration, but I'd be glad to be Prof (I've read most of the past SoW threads, so I have some familiarity with the commentary expectations.
Otherwise, more than happy to be a TA. Doesn't matter which country.
achillies27 (100 D)

Possible iOS6 bug
If I have 2 navies adjacent in the moves list then I can't issue the 3rd part of a support move or convoy order in safari or chrome for the upper navy! It's really frustrating! So far I'm just having to choose alternate moves but lately it's really hurt me a few times. Any idea what's going on here?

On foreign policy: Russia and China in the 21st century - redhouse forum item 5000
Ladies, Gentlemen,
For my 5000th forum contribution I would like to propose the topic above. What are Russia's and China's roles in the 21st century? Do the Lavrov-Kerry conversations on Syria mark a turning point in how Diplomacy is conducted? How far will China's growing influence stretch?

Can you imagine how much more exciting US politics would be if there were three houses, and only two of them were required to pass a bill?

Looking for re-match replacements
gameID=123838 just ended--110 point buy in with some pretty reputable players. I'm setting up a rematch--it was a good game--but not everyone from the original game is interested/available.

I've created a 130 point anon WTA which will consist of largely the same group, but we'll need a replacement or two. So far we have MarekP, Feeniks, and me confirmed for the rematch, while Sylvania is out this time. I'll post the others here as they confirm their interest.
