Pause error?
Two of my games just spontaneously went into pause without any of the players voting "pause". Is this happening to anyone else? Is there a bug?

MAD MARX GUNBOAT CHALLENGE
MadMarx is, without argument, the best player on this site. He claims to be bored, though, with his regular rotation of classic Diplomacy games. So why not try something new? I challenge you, MM, to a single game of gunboat with some of the top gunboaters on this site. You can have final approval over pot size, phase length, and the other players in the game. What do you say?

China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador--Snowden's Idea of a "Free State?"
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/snowden-washington-reaction-182004272.html "The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela" I have to agree...explain to me again how this guy's a symbol for freedom again (and again, do so WITHOUT saying "Well, the NSA was wrong--" YES. YES IT WAS. That does NOT mean this guy's good...really? Why pick those states, if he couldn't stand what the NSA was doing...they're not exactly Paradises of Government Transparency either...)

I want to be a league Substitute Please
Hi! I have been here at WebDiplomacy since the start of the year. Have played a lot of fun games and have been doing OK. Someone suggested that league games were a lot more strategic and the "done thing" was to sign up via the forums. Can anyone help? Thanks.

So in Holland, as in all other countries, there are kids teased in schools. The government has gone through great lengths to "protect them", a dangerous development if you ask me.

interest in a 17 player world gunboat tourney?
I was thinking anywhere from 5-8 games depending on the interest. 5 pts. 24 hour turns.

If interested, please pm me, and I can set up a tournament. This seems to be the only way to get rid of metas....

I have two questions to ask.
1. If I don't like a player and don't want to pause the game per that person's request, can the Mod pauses the game for that person?

2. If a person does not want to work and I don't want to give the person's my spare changes, can the government tax me then give the other person some welfare?

Say, I don't want to give welfare to the poor and the majority of the people vote along with me to have no welfare, can the government then tax us the majority voters to give the welfare to the poor until we vote the government out. Meanwhile, is it the government's power to take my money to give to the poor. Let say I am a very mean and selfish person. Is it my right not to give?

As a player, do I have the right to play the game unpaused?

Yes unless agreed to beforehand, although in some cases you are a dick for it. They can get a sitter, or for a live game...I will never pause. Never!

Meet is obviously making a social metaphor, he is equating pausing with supporting welfare recipients. No mod action should be required ... I think
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

No, he's upset about a game decision by another moderator, which is perfectly fine and acceptable in email form, though no details can go in the forum since it's anonymous.
philcore (317 D(S))

Then why the confusion about taxes? Meep, get your metaphors straight!
MeepMeep (100 D)
08 Jun 13 UTC
I am a good sport, I am not interested in achievement an unpause to gain advantage in a game, I won't report the game. What I am after is higher: Do I have the right to play the game unpause. Say, I am a very impatient player, I don't want the game to be paused.

Is there under any circumstance, under what circumstance, can a Mod pause the game for another player's request and overrule my desire to play the game?

I understand the Mod and other Dev here are all volunteers, so I don't expect you guys to be the pro. But I do want to point out the fact that most people suffer the syndrome of "power corrupt, power trip". And I can see why there are rebels who are against the authority. I am one of those rebels.

There two things certain in life, "Tax and Death". It's the inherent behavior in people to impose their wills on others. Tax is very universal, if not only global on earth.

So, we form societies and agree to pay tax for the society to function. But then who gave the right to some small group of people to tax us to support certain social programs. If they want to support those programs, they can open their own charity groups, why tax me? Why impose their will on me?

That's the question.
philcore (317 D(S))
08 Jun 13 UTC
That might be a question, but the question was about pausing. I'm confused.

But there is a time when pause doesn't have to be unanimous, in a tournament game like the masters where the rules of the tourney specify this is the case.

I got my question number 1 answer, Thank you jimo1121.

Rule #5.

5. The Pause/Unpause feature is not a diplomatic tool
The pause is there to stop players missing their orders, but is not part of the game. As such pausing or unpausing should not be used for diplomatic gain, such as refusing to unpause unless other players will draw the game. If it is being abused staff may step in to sort it out.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
08 Jun 13 UTC
Well the answer to your question is yes MeepMeep, there are situations where we can and will pause against someones wishes using rule 9 to back it up. Examples are when someone sends us an email saying they had a family emergency and will not be returning to the site for some time or when there is a storm front that knocks out large areas of power. In this specific case you have the right to not have the game paused though.

@MeepMeep, yes, sadly I've been extremely busy since starting my full time job and Mapu has been picking up the slack and taking a number of cases despite not being completely trained on every possible situation yet. I for one very much appreciate the assistance and I apologize for not training him on the proper procedure if someone decides not to pause because they don't like someone.

Mapu does raise some interesting points on rule five that we'll have to discuss with Kestas though, if someone says they will use a NMR caused from not pausing to make gains is that appropriate or not. Currently I suppose it is, but worth discussing for sure.

Sadly, MeepMeep, the answer to question 2 is that the government can and will steal (tax) money from those who work hard for it, and give it to those who do not (work hard for it).

Taxes are designed to create a better and more fair society. The wealthy today (in the civilised world) have the luxury of not living in fear of the mob. The wealthy of the past paid little in tax for social reasons, but paid small fortunes for private security. It is quite simply a better deal for everyone.

There are nations out there where even modestly wealthy people live in gated communities with guards and bars on the windows. One can but feel sorry for them.

I think Devonian is "trolling" and / or being absudly provocative
To have a civil society a nation must raise taxes, how else does it fund it's defense and the basic structures needed to keep a civil society going.

Has anyone been following the "blade runners" murder trial? He lived in a gated community with guards and bars on his windows, lets hope he exchanges that one for one at the south african tax payers expense, I don't feel sorry for him at all

The definition of a better society has been defined by a small group of people. Those who want to have a such a better society are welcome to create it with their own will and money. Don't tax me over my free will so that they can create such version of society.

Meep, what country do you live in?
MeepMeep (100 D)

I am not going to tell where I am living, but I was born into a hell hole. As a kid, I used to give myself this right: If you attack me, I give myself the right to do what ever I see fit and can get away with. Otherwise, I was very nice and peaceful. I read philosophy, warfare at age 11 and led big street battles at age 14.

Since I pretty much grew up from the street, my learning rate has been very high. At this moment I am well versed in pretty all known subjects for mankind, ranging from Computers, Electronics, Advanced Physics, History, Philosophy, Economics, Law, Martial Arts and so on.

You know, when I watch the Western movies when the cowboys grab each other shirts to punch, I always lol. My punch is so fast, I rely on the opponent's body inertia mass to hold his body in place. My punch just simply penetrate the intended target and destroy the soft internal organs.

Do this experiment. Put a piece of paper underneath a glass of water. Slowly pull the paper or quickly snap the paper out to see the effect of inertia mass.

If you want to stop contributing to society then step out of it. Give up all the direct and indirect benefits you enjoy. If you'd understood - and not just read - all those amazing subjects, you'd know that part of living in community with people is compromising. A bit like playing Diplomacy. On your bike, buddy.
And yes - what Jamie said... You're clearly trolling.
