Remember all those bullets DHS was buying. Well, apparently Obama's DHS is now acting as domestic police...because every tyranical government needs federal police to quell domestic political speech...

Suicide vs homicide
What's worse? I know my opinion, and I feel it's easy to guess, but I'm curious what you guys think. I'm talking both ethically and aftermath. Also, does it make a different if it's 800 people commiting suicide vs 1 commiting homicide, or the other way around? Do circumstances matter? Again, sounds pretty obvious to me but I don't want to influence the outcome.

Why was Landowner banned?
He wasnt a multi. He wasn't a meta since he never played a game. And what does "invalid email" mean? He spoke on the forum about responding to emails...what is the policy for banning someone based on not checking emails? If you go on vacation for a week and don't check, does that result in getting banned?

I was looking at someone's profile a while ago to see what they had posted about a subject and it seems that the threads/replys on our profiles are missing threads from the past month. Am I seeing this wrong, or is there some problem here?

Hey guys its me again.
I come here with a question. There is in fact a personal story behind this question, but I'm sure you are all tired of hearing my personal stories, so I won't go into that unless people want me to. Anyway, my question is this: Is listening to music on Youtube morally/ethically equivalent to watching pirated movies or bootlegs? If not, what is the difference? Assume that neither the music nor the movie is owned in any other medium.

Of Warp Cores and Insurgents--Trek 12 and the Post 9/11 Aesthetic
http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-talk/9-11-looms-large-over-star-trek-darkness-211915647.html
Interesting article about the allegories in the film...those that have seen it--agree, disagree (I very much agree, and felt it was very much in the Trek tradition of tackling topical issues) or what...but as a side note...is anyone tired of the terrorist/9-11 Aesthetic in TV and film, or feels it's being exploited too much?

Today I am going to take back my rights on this site. Today I am muting players that have consistently been trolls on this site and, IMO, have nothing to offer me in terms of intelligent conversation or even comedic results. So to Draug and krellin, I say a not so sad goodbye. To everyone else, I urge you to do the same. You can pick my trolls or get some of your own. But free yourself of the troll, no matter who it is. And, of course, post your mutings here. So that we can mock the trolls one more time.

Basically, you'd want to mute someone because you don't want to hear about him.
But... "so that we can mock the trolls one more time".

Muting someone and discussing about him, that's really lame. But it's true that you're offering something in terms of comedic results (even if those weren't your intentions), so I am hesitant: should I mute you?

Mmm....

Muted jimgov, confirmed.

I once muted someone. It lasted for 45 seconds, before I decided to unmute. If you mute the trolls, the trolls win.
jimgov (219 D(B))

No hecks. That's what I originally thought. If enough people mute the trolls, it will just be them trolling each other. And then we all win.
SYnapse (0 DX)

There's something really deconstructive about muting someone. It's like you can't handle their speech, to the point where you need to enforce their silence.
hecks (164 D)
20 May 13 UTC
They're also something counterproductive about announcing your muting. It provokes the trolls, and then those of us who don't mute people hear the trolls even more loudly. In effect, by announcing your mutes, you are trolling the trolls. If you're going to mute, mute quietly, and go in peace.
hecks (164 D)

"They're also"? Grammar fail. I meant "There's also".

You got it the wrong way around SY.

A troll is someone who's speech is meant only to deride yours, to mock yours, to reduce yours to unimportant jibberish. The natural reaction is to try and reinforce your speech with more arguments, but then the Troll has the satisfaction of seeing you move away from your point and into a defense of who you are (he'll of course help you get there with a few ad hominem attacks). At the end of the day, the Troll's speech really serves but one end: bring you out from behind what you're saying, expose you, so that he may turn the ridicule on you.

Muting the troll is taking away the only thing he has to see this happen. It's not saying you can't 'deal with his speech'. It's recognizing that there is no 'dealing with' since his speech is not articulating any idea: it's a functional tool used to attack people, not ideas. Muting means taking the tool away, not the desire to confront your ideas in a respectful environment.
SYnapse (0 DX)

"[a troll's] speech is not articulating any idea: it's a functional tool used to attack people, not ideas"

Where do you draw the line? It's quite easy to accuse somebody of trolling because you disagree with their opinions. Ex. "abortionists are evil and should all die" - if this is a genuine opinion and you mute it for trolling, you're ignoring a bigger issue, and choosing which opinions are "legitimate". This is why I was opposed to the silencing of blankflag.
hecks (164 D)
20 May 13 UTC
I favored the silencing of Blankflag because he kept using the forums to promote his stupid news site. Of course, that wasn't the reason given for his silencing, so I'm ambivalent. (Mind you that's ambivalent, meaning pulling in two directions, not indifferent. People often use indifferent and ambivalent interchangeably, but there's an important difference in their meanings.)
SYnapse (0 DX)
20 May 13 UTC
I feel that you were only opposed to this because it was a "stupid" news site, rather than a good news site.
SYnapse (0 DX)
20 May 13 UTC
Imagine a user signing up and talking on the forums about his really informative and well-presented news site. It's hard to believe he would have been silenced, even if, post for post, he fundamentally was the same as blankflag.
hecks (164 D)
20 May 13 UTC
Not true! I never even checked it out, so I can guarantee you that the quality of the site didn't impact my decision. It was the intrusive and repeated self-promotion that bothered me.
SYnapse (0 DX)
20 May 13 UTC
Well the quality of his posts, as well. Articulation is an important part of it. I dare say that if blankflag wrote full sentences with capital letters and full stops he might not have been silenced.
jimgov (219 D(B))

I checked it out. Picture putting all of the conspiracy theory threads together, really poorly, on one page. Then put them in random boxes, use no capitalization or punctuation, and then give it a color scheme that would make your eyes bleed. THAT is his site.
hecks (164 D)
20 May 13 UTC
You may be right about that, but there are lots of people around here with equally poor grammar who don't get silenced. His writing skills alone didn't get him silenced.

By the way, when's his month up? It's got to be coming soon, right?

Ahhhhhh ha ha ha! If you will *please* look up my most recent "conversations" with jimgov, you will see this: I post a point of discussion, and then jim-bitch replies with insults.

I suggest he answer my points, instead of just throwing insults, and jim-bitch replies with more insults.

jimgov apparently has the intellectual capability of a gnat...about on par with bo-sox...and I apologize to the gnat for insulting him.

Grow up, baby boy jim-bitch. Come back when you have learned how to talk with the adults and learned how to actually contrsuct and argument based upon facts and such.

Until then, Goooood riddance, and thanks for muting me. It will be a pleasure to not have you responding to my posts with mindless insults.

OK, Let's Try This AGAIN...A Game of English-Language Variants...
I've tried to start this game 3 times now or so, let's make it happen this time--again, the premise is simple: global chat, everyone picks a form of English (ex. I'm using Elizabethan English...some people have wanted to use Nasdat, Rastafarian, Middle English, Southern US English, etc.)...so, indicate interest below and I'll send you the password, my last finals are tomorrow and I want this to be my return game after my short semi-hiatus from the site...let's go!
