@Steephie - If you parents are at all famous, people will know you as their child. People all over Butler County knew me growing up because my mom was a political figure. Between that and being our congressman's appointee to West Point, I ran into people outside the school district who knew me all the time. Kinda like everyone knows Chelsea Clinton, only at a local level.

A chap in the pub came up to me a year or so ago, enthusiastically addressed me by my name and asked how I was settling in now I'd moved back (which I'd done fairly recently). I had no idea who he was... He also had no idea who I was. He did know someone who looked and sounded a lot like me, had the same name, and was returning to live in the area.

I'm not sure racism is against forum rules. In fairness to Nigee, in his own mind he's being a bit of a wit and using it in an ironic way. Although in practise he produces more racist crap than almost anyone else here, I don't think he holds any racial prejudice himself. I could be wrong though.

If I wanted to be racist I would be so much better than that, read it again and if you still think I'm a racist just accept the fact you're an ignoramus.
I would like the Mods to moderate real racism/sexist/homophobic language but their main job seems to be to prevent people talking about cheaters, I would have thought that would be a key topic of conversation but not here. Talk about anything else but cheaters here get anonymity, some for weeks, some for months, some for years.
If I was racist I'm sure my African wife would have divorced me years ago.

I would answer them, ask how they're doing, leave things ambiguous in your mind if necessary. Neighborhood kids tend to know everybody. Especially if you're the eccentric type who walks your dog without talking to anybody. Watch Up and see if you recognize the type. ;-)

Going back to the OP, this is interesting. It was my birthday today. It was a lovely sunny day in Durham, which if you've never been there, has a pretty small, compact city centre. I went into the city centre to visit a couple of shops (hoping to spend birthday money) and then have a drink and watch the football. As I walked through the centre of town, literally dozens of people seemed to know it was my birthday, and I was stopped every few yards by someone wanting to wish me well, in some cases people I barely knew. Later, I went to the pub for a few drinks, a couple of really quite lovely girls who are friends of mine, but who I hadn't specifically asked to come out, appeared, and spent the evening draping themselves over me, making me look actually borderline cool to any casual observer. Funny how stuff goes.
