What kind of smokes can you use in that thing for your meats?

I got that same model at Gander Mountain on sale for $140, but it normal retails there for $229.I really enjoy it, and it's easy to use, so if you're looking for your first smoker, I would reccomend it. I've been using it for about a year now.

Thanks Jon, I was skeptical of an electric smoker like that but it seems to get universal praise.
Would be a real interesting thing to get into. Gotta check the old bank and see if I can throw $200 at a new toy...

A friend and I split it. Which made it much more economical. And now whenever one of us hosts parties we also pull out the smoker. I like it because you don't have to open it up to add more wood, there's a slot on the side you can drop them in. Only real issue would be if your power goes out while cooking, but you run that risk every time you cook. I first used the upright R2D2 like "bullet" smoker. It was nice, about $100, used charcoal, but had some issues with it on windy days with it holding temp. I was skeptical about electric too, but it's really nice. And with 4 racks you can hold a decent amount of food in there at the same time.

We just bought a smoking try to add to our gas grill, but then we aren't looking for pure cooking via smoking, just adding a bit of the flavor to our grilled steaks and chicken.

I thought of that but I think I'd like to actually make pulled pork, bacon, other pig products fully on the smoker. Even pizza.

Smokers take a very long time to cook though. The folks at BBQ places like Whisky's (http://www.whiskysrestaurant.com/) pretty much keep it running continuously and it takes hours for them to cook a batch of pulled pork. Where as a grill takes 10 minutes to grill a steak. So fire up the grill and let the chips start smoking with the lid closed, then when the smoke is looking good, slip the steaks in and grill them. 30 minutes from lighting the grill to plating the meat.

yeah, but there's just something to be said about pulled pork that's been cooking for 8 hours. So delicious. It's also not like you need to spend that entire time staring at the smoker like you do when you're cooking burgers or steaks on a grill.

I'll often spend an afternoon sitting outside by the smoker in a lawn chair reading a book and slowly sipping a glass of whiskey. Or else will sit with friends all enjoying beers while we keep an eye on the smoker. Or on days when it's too hot, I'll position the smoker so I can see it out the window and then sit inside on the couch and watch TV or play video games while keeping an eye on the smoker.


I've made everything from chicken wings to meatballs to meatloaf in the smoker. It's usually worth the time when you can spend it to cook in it.

I currently make pulled pork in an oven using a clay cooler which takes 6ish hours. It's nice because you can just set it and forget it. A smoker might need more attention. Electric ones seem to have good temperature control so all it might need is for me to be around to feed it wood chips which I can deal with. I just don't want to have to spend an entire day tinkering with it.

I guess the difference is I don't have that time. I would rather be down watching a Red's game or playing a round of golf or off playing poker at the Casino or out in the workshop building a piece of furniture than sitting watching TV or playing a video game all day. I reserve TV and video games for late at night after dinner is done and I need to unwind from a busy day.

Yonni, smoke is usually only absorbed for the first 3 or so hours. Quite often when I'm smoking pulled pork I'll start it on the smoker for 3-4 hours and then wrap it in foil and put it in a baking dish and transfer it to my oven for the rest of the time. Some traditional smokers frown on that, but I can't tell the difference.

He sends out a monthly newsletter with recipies and tips and the site has all sorts of ideas on stuff to smoke. His newsletter is free and usually will contain recipies that are appropriate for the time of year, ie, turkey around thanksgiving, ham around Christmas/Easter, etc etc.

They need to make a smoker where 100% of the smoke goes into the meats, so it doesn't foul the air nearby. Usually you can see smoke coming out of the smoker; that smoke isn't in the meats.
