Paused Games...
OK, the mod email is filled with requests to unpause games. Here are some pointers to help us out in getting those games unpaused.

If you are playing for points... make sure its 101 or greater.
Too many Multis again... I'm not going to name names or point fingers since we can't but it's getting to the point where I am playing half the time with multis and losing an assload of points. They are getting even more clever and using a new "slave" account every few games. Watch out fellow fair players.

CONSERVATIVE MAN
Funny....the littel boy calls himself a "man",and yet so very often his posts are whiny, bitchy, little-boy posts asking for basic relationship advice. Since he knows mostly nothing about anything....should he have to change his name?

He is a dumbfuck, both poltiically and socially. How pathetic.....but I'm sure his Mommy is proud of him....<sigh...> (I hear she has a *firm grip* Isn't that right, eh? ConservativeMan???

The Compliment Thread
Given all the rage against various users, and bile that some members of the site like to throw around I thought it might be nice to have a thread were we can celebrate the good side of our community.

Which is to say pay the person above you a compliment.

Civil Discourse
I have always enjpyed civil discourse, where I can have a battle of philosophy, theology and history with someone while maintaining civil. With that in mind, I am thinking of going to a local mosque and asking if there is someone that would participate in an interfaith discussion. Are there others who enjoy this type of thing, or am I weird in this.

Can anyone critique my essay?
This is an essay for my English summer assignment. Note that I'm a sophomore in high school, so don't expect it to sound like an English major wrote it. Also, it's about a mentor of mine, dead or alive. I chose Jesus, and I hope that the atheists on here are unbiased enough to give a good review.

Thank you for your patience
I currently don't have mod status, and most of the mods are on vacations, so fortknox has been handling all the unpause requests himself.

Thank you for your patience while we sort this out. Remember, you can upause games yourself by all voting to Unpause ingame.

Can we program a semi-anon variant to decrease likelihood of multi and meta cheaters?
The variant will show who's playing but not what country he or she is playing. Then the players are able to spot metagamers and possibly multi cheaters right away.
Please give feedback on idea and feasibility.

Thank You, Geofram!
I just wanted to publicly recognize Geofram for sitting for me for an extended period of time in which I had no time to properly pursue my Diplomacy games. He stepped up when I didn't have anyone to ask and ensured my opponents had an opponent instead of a CD.

Why post this in the forum? He deserves the kudos, and anyone who thinks more highly of him for this is icing on the cake.

Noober question
So ... what's the point of Gunboat?

I thought the draw of Diplomacy was supposed to be the wheeling, dealing and cajoling. I don't understand the appeal of taking away messaging.
Yonni (136 D(S))

This needs to be added to the FAQ.

I'm newish here too but, from what I understand, there are a few aspects of gunboat that are appealing to people.

1. You can work on your tactics. Diplomacy is a large part of Diplomacy but so is the tactics so gunboat tests that part

2. There is a lot of communication in the orders you make. You can give support etc. to signal your intentions. Opening the large version of the map lets you see in detail what people ordered.

3. It's quicker and more conducive to live games. That's the main appeal for me, although I still can't quite keep up.

Here's a live game that's starting in 10 minutes if you want

That makes sense, especially communication via orders. Huh. I'm too late to join that game but maybe I'll watch it, see how it looks.
Gunboat is DEFINITELY useful for learning about tactics, soft-spot provinces, and the general nuts-and-bolts of the on-the-board stuff. I recommend downloading you some DAIDE and playing a bunch of gunboat games against an AI if you're new. Let's face it, you're not going to be a very good negotiator if you don't know what it is you're negotiating over.

That said, gunboat highlights the necessity of communication by taking away your ability to do it (orders intended to convey information notwithstanding). You WILL hit a point in your gunboat game when you'll say, "man, if only I could convince X to move to Y, we'd run the board together." Use that in your next press game.
Draugnar (0 DX)

The point of gunboat is quite simple. Actions speak louder than words, even in press games, so use those actions and learn to read intent in *every* move all over the board. Russia may be willing to help your France with Germany and England if you can just signal him and he may be signalling you already.
Draugnar Doctrine:
"The point of gunboat is quite simple... Actions speak louder than words"
SantaClausowitz Corollary:
But nobody listens

Draugnar Derivation:

Interesting ... now you've got me wanting to try it.

Thanks for the responses everybody.

The point of gunboat is that it's a different game and much more fun... for some people, including me. For example because you have to treat opponents as rational people since you know nothing about them whereas it may take take just one message to find out that your neighbour is a complete idiot. My skill of dealing with idiots is atrocious so I preffer my gunboats. Especially in longer phase gunboats, you are basically playing against yourself - what you can come up with is the same thing as what your opponent may come up with. You will seldom be wrong in overestimating your opponent. In press games, this crystal clear idea is convoluted by the presence of words.
Octavious (2802 D)

Gunboat is a truly dire varient of the game that takes the soul of Diplomacy and pisses all over it. The moves are painfully formulaic, the style of play is so different from the true game that most of what you learn in one form is useless or, even worse, highly misleading when applied to the other, and at the end of the day almost every game is decided by someone who doesn't know a damned thing about gunboat doing something really stupid.

The Gunboat varient is only one step more enjoyable that the infamous Pacifist varient, in which speaking is allowed but moving units is forbidden and the winner is the last player to lose the will to live.

Czech +1.

No one claims that gunboat is true to the original game. But I think it's better than the original game. The diplomacy isn't really what I enjoy, the balance of the tactics is. Gunboat is like seven player chess. It's fantastic.

Alright, anyone want to give some feedback on the game we just finished?

I think it was one of the better games I've played but elected to go for the draw because a) I have a friend coming over soon and b) I didn't have the confidence to drag the game out for another hour in an attempt to solo.

It was fun though - more so than the other live games I've tried.

I also immediately regret the decision but I guess that's a common response.

Seriously Oct... that was the most brilliant and well written critique of gunboat I've ever seen. I have been tempted the past 15 minutes to start a new thread just about it, because it completely aligns with my feelings on gunboat games.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

Oh shut up. Gunboats are fun and no one forces you to play gunboat.
Having said that, it's like rolling a damn die almost all of the time playing gunboat. Damn near impossible to win unless you play with idiots. Most end up being drawn or cancel due to CDs.
Having said *that*, gunboats are fun and no once forces you to play gunboat.
fortknox (2059 D)
12 Aug 11 UTC
Gunboats have influence (granted, less than a normal game, but most gunboats are live and people play like 2 dozen a week) on ghost rating performance. I'd like to see a ghost rating without any gunboats to see how much of a change there would be.
I am not forced to play them (nor do I play them), I am forced to mod them, which I don't mind... but being compared with them in skills? That's where I have issue.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
12 Aug 11 UTC
The only way to do compare skills efficiently is to program GR right into the site's code and break it down into categories such as Overall, Live games, Gunboat games, and Classics.
fortknox (2059 D)
12 Aug 11 UTC
it is programmed from the db, and he can filter (for example, he filters out games that have drawn before... 1903, I believe).
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

So, can he break down the ratings into those four categories?
fortknox (2059 D)

you'd have to ask him

Registration
It is impossible to register to this game since the switch to the dedicated server, the validation page just refreshes. 6 of our group is already registered, but we cannot (and will not) start a game without the seventh member. If it is a browser issue, IExplorer, Firefox and Chrome are displaying this error.

Hope this will get resolved soon, I'm eager to play with my friends.
