I am New
I am new to diplomacy and this site, but I've read some stuff on the net. I want to know from experienced players, how much backstabbing and what amount goes on in games played here, and what is socially acceptable and what isn't as I figure out how to play this.

The best, coolest, most awesome names.
So, there are all kinds of names on here, ranging from initials to characters out of books to references to movies.

My question is who has the best name on the site? Why? Or, why not?

Due to an annoying amount of CDs
Would anyone like to play a game with me where if two people CD, we automatically draw and split the extra points? Or would this be considered meta gaming?
Obama Bin Laden (0 DX)

meta- unless u all agree to it in the game, not before it even starts
Draugnar (0 DX)

Actually, I'd call it the insurance variant. As long as everyone in the game agrees to the rules, it's a variant and not metagaming. And it's a variant I could see catching on.

If everyone agreed to this beforehand I see no issues.

Of course you will have to trust your co-gamers to abide by that decision. :)
De Gaulle (0 DX)

Yes, especially if the cd or cd's benefits one player, i am sure they would be reluctant to agree to a draw... i know i would be tempted to go for it!! at least to cut the draw down a lot
rayNimagi (375 D)

Oftentimes, when a country CD's in a live game, most of the players lobby for a draw. I consider drawing the right thing to do if a CD only benefits a couple of players. This means 99% of CD's fall under this category.

I'd play if you set up a game. As this game shows, you can take my word that I will be willing to draw or cancel if a CD taints the game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=29330#gamePanel

Would you draw at two CDs (Civil Disorders), or two NMRs (no moves received)?

The latter occur much more frequently than the former.
De Gaulle (0 DX)
28 Jul 10 UTC
well it only takes 2 lots of NMR in consecutive turns to create a cd, so i assume he means CD

"well it only takes 2 lots of NMR in consecutive turns to create a cd, so i assume he means CD "

I don't see how that reasoning led to the assumption that he meant CD. All you did was define what a CD is to a player who has been here for 2 years ;)

I can't speak for OP, but I would do it for either as long as it was stated beforehand.
2 CDs would be best. NMRs have happened before based on server flukes -- 2 CDs would require four such flukes or some people CDing, and in either instance that's basically ethical grounds for ending the game anyway.

I would make an exception for the jackasses that CD when they're a turn or two away from defeat, though. If their death was inevitable and only sped up by the CD, I don't think that's a gamebreaking advantage. It's an advantage, sure, but it doesn't strike me as end-the-game-worthy.

That's true, I'm just annoyed of CD'ing after 3 years

People joining those games wouldn't CD either. Lol. Join my anon gunboat! I won't CD!
taylornottyler (100 D)

I imagine also though if you make a game like this, no one would CD, I wanted to do this just to make points, but this could actually just make sure no one CD's

I dont know if I like the idea of an automatic draw. cancel maybe, but draw no.

here is one consideration. for players with high GRs, most of these live games are like traps. you end up playing with players with VERY low GRs... so even a 5way draw would mean losing points. not worth it.

maybe someone can correct my assumptions... but take this scenario:

player 1: 400pts (contribution to GR pot: 20)
plyer 2-7: 100pts (contribution to GR pot: 5 ea so 30)

total pot is 50.

5way draw means 10GR per player... the top GR player loses 10 D (note, gunboat games are calculated at 50% rates I think)... why does he lose points? because he did not CD and others did!!!

just not worth the risk - I already know that a LOT of top players wont even play live games or gunboats for this reason...

i wish there was a solution where the GR thinking would not even enter the equation and we could just play for the hell of it.
hopsyturvy (521 D)

The solution is: don't think about it
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))

@Babak - Your calculations are right but I have to disagree with you on the logic. A rating system is not the goal of the game, is just some form of measurement to help categorize players. Not sure if the number 5 on GR is really better player then the #50 (just an example, don´t know who are 5 and 50) but most likely #5 will be a better player then #500. That´s it what GR is about.
The goal of the game is first of all to have fun playing each game (and win, of course).
I usually don´t play live games because I don´t have time, but when I have a chance I play and don´t worry about what it will make to my GR (I know I am not in the top 10, but even if I was there it won´t affect me), just try to have a couple hours of fun and win the game.

How to deal with too many games...
I can't seem to understand how, but I've gone and gotten myself into 8 'long' phase games of more than 24 hours each. 3 of these are 'talking' games. 2 of these are thematic talking games. 3 of these are >100 point bet games.

I'm so screwed. Any advice?

I will be away all weekends from now on so I can't constantly ask for a 3 day pause. So I'm looking for a sitter.
I'm in two games. one wta game with high pot (700+D), in which I'm almost defeated and a C1 summer league game (doing well there).
Anyone interested?

Martial law in the deep south?
Rumor mill speculates a forcible evacuation from the gulf coast.
Normally I dismiss martial law rumors pretty quick, but given the toxicity of the water, beaches, and even air from texas to florida (some symptoms of corexit (sp) poisoning as far north as N carolina (unverified) I think this is a real possibility
What do you think?
